Early NTSB finding say no sign of engine failure so it can only be pilot error and inexperience in flying in foggy condition without TAWS..

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/us/kobe-bryant-helicopter-crash-ntsb.html

Only 100 feet from clear skies and instead of continuing to ascent and get above the clouds, he suddenly descended.

I watched a clip on You Tube where another rotary wing pilot was discussing the crash who knew the pilot killed.

He stated that the pilot was "Instrument Instructor Certified".

He did also say that he may not have had too many hours at that rating as that weather was unusual for those types of charter in the area he normally worked.

In my opinion it was quite possibly a case of "If you don't get us there I'll have you fired" type of situation.

That is my take on it as well, Andy. Purely speculation of course, but if everyone else was grounded, and he chose to fly VFR...

It’s more than just having an IFR rating. You must be current which means having performed it in a recent timeframe.

I was just echoing OG on the pilot error aspect of it.

The fog... well that is just a no-fly decision that wasn't made I guess.

It wasn’t the fog, it was overcast/low ceilings. He could see the ground and was following roads. It was climbing up into the clouds that put him in IMC conditions.

There was fog around, but it wasn’t the weather issue in this crash.

But once people hear “fog” that seems to stick in every bodies head.

I flew with EAA Young Eagles program today. Made three flights taking 7 teenagers for their first flight. Of course the Kobe Bryant crash was a topic of discussion. Two of the mothers were a bit spooked and almost cancelled coming with their kids. Fortunately we had perfect flying weather. Fort McDill had some of their soldiers making their jump requirements so everyone got to see a military airplane and paratroopers. It was a Hollywood jump.

He took off in Orange County, not near the crash site. I think they said the weather at the time was clear, hence the VFR flight plan and the switch to Special VFR near Burbank (I think). It got nasty where he was headed while he was in the air.

Staples Center holds 20,000 people. More than 90,000 people preregistered online to get one of those tickets. LAPD is telling folks if you don't have a ticket and a parking pass, you will not be allowed in. There will be roadblocks and check points to make sure only ticket holders will enter the area to proceed to Staples Center. People don't follow directions. They will still show up and what they will do is cause a major traffic jam and gridlock and keep those who have tickets from getting there.
