White Tiger was a reasonably good Russian film,if you ignore the terrible mocked-up Tiger. To be honest,a lot of good WW2 films that I have seen are non-English speaking.

You mean Hollywood-produced films. I'm sure there have been plenty made by the Russian film industry.

But it's not easy to get them.

There are no video stores anymore and when they were, most of them only carried Hollywood titles.

Amazon and Netflix don't carry many of these Russian made World War 2 films.

This is true. You next best bet is either Youtube or you have to go to some Russian website and see if you can order a dvd copy from there. I know Criterion has a pretty large selection of Russian language films but don't know how many are WW 2 themed.

I watched this and was disappointed. Good story but the way it was told jumping back and forth between timelines and the romance story messed up the flow of it. Too much time spent on her visit to America meeting Eleanor. too much time spent on her romance with another sniper.

Not enough on her achievements in the battles. Also a bit of Russian propaganda on serving and sacrificing for the Motherland and how they have to kill the Nazi Fascists and so on. Almost felt like a Hollywood make World War 2 film with American propaganda.

The English speaking scenes had Russian dubbing so you hear both Russian and English at the same time. Why they couldn't keep it in English and subtitle it in Russian? The rest of the film was in Russian with English subtitles.

Check this out. Some of these are set during WW 2 but may not necessarily be a "war movie" in the traditional sense.

Thanks. I love Criterion. I can go broke buying Criterion all day long. I still haven't seen the Russian version of War and Peace.

I can thoroughly recommend 'The King's Choice'.

Based on the invasion of Norway in WW2 and the action that took place at the Oscarsborg Fortress which saw the destruction of the heavy German cruiser Blücher.

Hard to believe it was made for $ 7.5 million.

Thanks. Will check them out.

I also last year saw 2 films about the Russians fighting the Finns and I think Germany may or may not have been involved, taking the Finns' side.

The Winter War (1989) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098437

The Unknown Soldier (1955) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048752

I liked those 2 films.

The Winter War was strictly Finland vs. USSR but after Barbarossa started in June 1941 the Germans and Finns were not so much "allies" but more like temporary collaborators. The Finns simply wanted to take the territory back that they lost during the Winter War and that's it while the Germans wanted a complete and total conquest of the USSR.

It was wasn't it.
I do like to view foreign war films...there are many on Amazon Prime.
I recall a Russian series about fighter pilots. I mentioned I was watching this on Teamspeak and commented on how badly made the prop aircraft were constructed. A Polish chap that knows these things, replied "No, they were real Migs in the series, and that was the build quality of aircraft of the time!"

I just watch episode 1. It's very good.

I am buying the entire season in HD for $2.99 instead of getting them one by one at 99 cents each.

If I never seen this, I would not had known about this that was in episode 1.

I've only heard of the events in Episode 3.

Saw 1917 about two weeks ago. It did not evoke the same emotions from me as Saving Private Ryan.
I can’t say anything else without too many spoilers and imo it is worth seeing.

Just finished watching 1917. I thought it was very good. I also saw Midway...which I thought was NOT very good. A war movie is at it's best when the story is centered around people, not about colorful explosions.

We just got Midway from Amazon Prime. I doubt the U.S. Navy strategy at the time involved 12 TBD Devastator flying in a tight group all headed toward one carrier or 9 SBD Dauntless all diving on the same carrier while they are picked off one by one from the air by AA fire..
