I don't listen to Country but even I have heard of him! I wonder how many Country music fans today under the age of like 40 listen to his stuff?

I'm not such a fan that I have any of Merle's, George's or even Willie's individual albums, but they each have enough songs to fill a Greatest Hits CD.
My Merle Haggard hits are:
Swinging Doors The Bottle Let Me Down I'm a Lonesome Fugitive Branded Man Sing Me Back Home Mama Tried Hungry Eyes Workin' Man Blues Okie from Muskogee The Fightin' Side of Me Daddy Frank I Think I'll Just Stay Here and Drink Big City Are the Good Times Really Over (I Wish a Buck Was Still Silver) Going Where the Lonely Go Silver Wings
+ Pancho and Lefty w/Willie Nelson

Mom always had the car radio playing Conway Twitty or something, but I was into metal. I didn't really get into Classic Country until I was well into my 20s.
Really started with the Johnny Cash American Recordings, especially Unchained and Solitary Man (Merle is on that one too). Two of the most amazing albums of any genre. That inspired me to look back thru some of the classics.
If you haven't heard those albums, do yourself a favor and check it out. Covers and collaborations with U2, Nick Cave, Trent Reznor, Will Oldham, etc...
This duet with Tom Petty: (too bad no video)
System Vitals: Intel i5 9600, RTX2060, 16GB DDR3000(OC), Win10 Home 64bit, Saitek X-52, Logitech G27 Current Sims: MSFS2020, Assetto Corsa, StrikeFighters2, IL2:BoS etc, Arma3, American Truck Simulator, SnowRunner
This pic is pretty much the extent of my old-school Country collection, other than a few Amazon MP3 singles (also not shown is Hank Williams Jr.'s Greatest Hits and 4 Alabama albums + double-CD Greatest Hits)...
It's more than enough Country to include on a road trip to the middle of nowhere to see Laura Ingalls' outhouse or whatever.

Merle is great. I've always loved these two songs in particular. I also like "If We Make it through December" which I think I first heard Marty Robbins do. I think they were pretty good friends. I also like that episode of The Waltons with Merle Haggard and his little solo at the end. Its probably lost to internet land but I think one of, if not the first flight simulation movies I ever made was when I first got a Track IR3 Pro and I used Silver Wings set to me flying a Stearman in FS2004.
