Ive owned ED for over 4 years, played around with it just a little when I first got it but only have around 20 hours total.

But now I'm wanting to start devoting a bit of time, a couple of hours a week at least.

I have about 1.8 million credits, an Adder and I'm parked at Al-din Prospect in the Alpha Centauri system.

What should I do to advance and make some money?

Welcome to Elite Dangerous F4U! You have an entire galaxy waiting to be discovered. smile

I would say the fastest way to make big money is to do deep core asteroid mining. You'll need to equip your Adder with cargo racks, a prospector limpet controller, a collector limpet controller, a pulse wave analyzer and limpets. I have never flown the Adder but I'm pretty sure it has enough available slots for all of those modules. The most valuable minerals in the game are void opals and low temperature diamonds. You can get up to 1.6 million credits for each void opal canister and I've made as much as 1.1 million for each canister of low temperature diamonds. This is a lot more money than what you would make by doing the mission grinding.

Wow. When I started out in Elite in 2014 a million credits an hour was impossible until you got hold of something like a Vulture and hunted bounties in a ring.

Here's a quick-n-dirty Adder build that will get you started.
I'd get about 8-10 limpets to start off, you may have to jett a couple if you get lucky right away, but you'll wind up with 10-12 milion credits with one haul.
One asteroid mined properly will more than fill the cargo space this will have.

You might have to do a few runs, but after about 30 million credits you can upgrade to something with a bit more capacity. Or, you can grind it out with the adder for a bit longer and upgrade to this Python for about 90 million.
That's my current ship of choice for core mining.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

You'll also need to perfect your FSD interdiction evasion skills since pirates WILL attempt to get your valuable cargo on your return trip to a station.

A not very challenging shortcut, but with only 2 hours a week to devote you might consider it. If you can multicrew with someone, when they cash their activities you get a percentage depending on rank at no cost to them. As an extreme example, a squadron associate and I helped a new player like this last night and their combined share was cr 50 million. In my early game I did long range tourist missions in a DBX, which is cheap and has good jump range. These missions are instantly accessible, comparatively risk free (avoid criminal passengers) and pay well until you can purchase and equip a ship more suitable for mining or other activities. The Adder is not an optimal choice and you will encounter pirates but if you do give it a try, 3rd party mining tools like this will help maximise your profit.

Thanks again for all the tips, this weekend didn't work out. Too much going on. Maybe I can sneak in an hour or two during this coming week

Got very little stick time in ED again this weekend but I did pick up Horizons in steam for $9!

Horizons is a must have add-on since it adds the ability to land on planetary facilities and it adds the ability to upgrade your ship modules via the use of engineers.

Engineering was daunting to me at first. A large and deep rabbit hole. Adds immensely to the grind aspect of E:D, as well. However, engineering really makes the ships much more capable. The best advice I can give starting out engineering is to collect EVERYTHING with regards to the materials. Also, scan all ships you encounter. The mats/data will pile up quickly.

+1 Bohemond

I'll also add that the top priority for engineering in my opinion should be the FSD (frame shift drive) and the power plant. Engineer those two modules first before you engineer the other stuff like the armor, shields and weapons.

One thing I'm going to do is give up flying in VR for now, I need to be able to access notes, "a lot" LOL

FSD is priority one for engineering, for sure. PP number 2, I’d opine thrusters are 3. After that, it depends on what you like to do in game. For combat, I’d next go PD, shields, weapons, sensors, and shield boosters.

Until I got my "VR Legs" I gave up VR for tooling around on planets. It got me way too sick. Eventually, I got used to it and now I usually do ok but at first it was awful! But SRV-ing on a planet is totally awesome in VR, and Guardian ruins are particularly amazing to drive around in!
