Early reports are often wrong reports. 5 killed. Kobe and his one daughter. I wonder who the other three are; every bit as bad as Kobe and his daughter.

I hold him in very low esteem.

4 daughters born 2003, 2006, 2016, and 2019.

RIP to the flight crew, Kobe, and all onboard. One report states the daughter's basketball coach was onboard. Perhaps off to practice....

Tragic.

It's a Sikorsky S-76.

Twin engine, 4 bladed main and tail rotors.

$13 million each.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sikorsky_S-76

It seats 8-12 people in the back depending on the model and configuration plus the pilot and copilot or pilot and passenger in the front.

RIP to all on board.

I’ve only been on a helicopter once and did not care for it. It just seems to me like a naturally unstable platform that can go down at any moment.

As I said, early reports are often wrong reports.

Number killed is changing.

VERY safe aircraft overall.

Pilot trying to impress celeb client by flying in fog?...dunno

Not cool, Still too early...lotsa fog...I HATE fog when navigating anything, car, boat, aircraft (from bad to worse). Fog kills...was almost run over by a BIG ship in Mississippi River in Pea Soup fog (couldn't see the bow of my boat 15' feet away).

Weird thing is, when sitting on land, or walking around, I love the fog. Very peaceful...

edit: ALL the companies I knew of in the the oil patch flew TWO pilots on S-76's.

That ABC reporter who said Bryant and all his 4 daughters were killed should be fired and never be allowed to work in journalism.

If you go to Flightaware.com and enter that helicopters tail number, N72EX, you can see the flight. Just more than half way you can see it doing a couple circles. Below the graphic you can see a flight log of altitude and speed. This wasn’t a normal flight profile.

Don't know how flight regulations in the US work but I know that in this part of the world civilian and commercial helicopters are never permitted fly in fog, above cloud, or in any low visibility situation. If ATC does not like the conditions anywhere in the flight plan, take off will not be permitted. I know this because I have sat for days in northern Labrador under a clear blue sky with a fueled and ready chopper waiting for the visibility to clear at some point on the planned route.

Listening to the ATC communication in the video posted by chaz above, it seems to me that he was doing a waiting pattern for ~15mins because he needed to cross some airfields starting/landing path. It also repeatedly required him to stay below 2500ft - was a few hours ago I listened to it, but I think he was at something like 1500-1700ft. It was also repeatedly said that he is under "special VFR" (visual flight rules, as opposed to IFR, instrument FR…), whatever "special" means in that context, I don't know…
Edit: Wikipedia helps, special VFR.
Quote
According to Federal Aviation Regulations, SVFR operations can only be conducted in the controlled airspace around an airport where that controlled airspace extends down to the surface (so-called surface area). SVFR can only be conducted below 10,000 feet MSL in such areas.[2][3]
SVFR at night requires an IFR-equipped aircraft and an IFR-rated pilot in command. In helicopters, there is no minimum flight visibility requirement, or a requirement for an IFR-equipped aircraft or an IFR-rated pilot in command.[2]
