Successfully.

Launch is around the 18 minute mark. Abort takes place about a minute and a half into the launch.

Amazing! I was so impressed by the main chutes opening so gradually. Pure genius.

Did they mean to blow the rocket up?

As I recall, they did a deliberate engine cutout, followed by escape system activation. The failure of the fully fueled rocket stages that were left behind was expected, but when it would happen (early or late) wasn't clear (to me anyway).

Good to see a success here. Not every day you get to watch a rocket launch fail, and still be a success.

Yep. It was fully expected, once the Dragon was gone the front end of the Falcon 9 wasn't very aerodynamic any longer and still moving very last fairly low in the atmosphere, aerodynamic forces tore it apart and the remaining fuel ignited.

If you pause the video at 19:50 you can see the black cloud of the explosion in Dragons "rear view" . Pretty cool.

They stopped showing the altimeter just before the escape system initiation but I think they were at around 80,000 feet.

SpaceX releases preliminary results from Crew Dragon abort test

Quote
Data from the Jan. 19 in-flight launch escape demonstration of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon spacecraft indicate the performance of the capsule’s SuperDraco abort engines was “flawless” as the thrusters boosted the ship away from the top of a Falcon 9 rocket with a peak acceleration of about 3.3Gs, officials said Thursday.
