The Battle Of Britain

Diary entry July 25th, 1405 hours, second intercept, Yellow and Blue Sections. Engagements Over the West Country. No. 238 Squadron, Middle Wallop:

As Flt Lt Lenny Marshall followed the Hun down, he broke in on the R/T, “I got him,...... he's dropping like a stone!” While 'Len' tracked the 109's descent, the rushing air howled quite deafeningly as it passed through the hole punched in his canopy glass by a piece of shrapnel. At that moment 'Len' peered past the break in the canopy, and he could see that the outer portion of the Hun's starboard wing had been brutally blown away by his eight .303 Browning's. With nil movement evident inside the cockpit of the Luftwaffe fighter, 'Len' suspected the pilot may have blacked out. There was an outright loss of control in this Me109 as it savagely spun and tumbled it's way toward the Isle. In as much as an instant, 'Len' fancied a small amount of commiseration for the Jerry pilot, when in all actuality it was his commanders who bore the responsibility, for they had been the ones to direct these schwarms into this pursuit of violence over Southern England. He promptly rescinded this momentary thought of empathy as he grit his teeth at the thought of the heinousness of the German aggression. 'Len' commenced to draw a pint and at the same instance rolled his trim wheel gently to ease his lass's nose heavenward to break free of the dive which his Hurricane presently found herself in. He felt the line drawing near! The line of blackout, which no pilot purposely dared to cross. The view to the room began to close, the outer boundaries of his vision fashioned dark curtains which were poised to slowly draw closed with hardly a moments notice. The cockpit bracing appeared to fade to grey and then shaded to black as the reflector sight vanished almost completely from his view. 'Len' knew at this ofttimes well rehearsed moment that he must ease up his pull of the control column and halt the movement of his trim wheel if he were to remain conscience.

The line ebbed as 'Len' swung around recovering from his own dive, all the while his observation of the Hun was intently vigilant as he witnessed the Jerry pilot plummet further and further. I wondered if 'Len' thought about what was reeling through that Hun pilot's mind as he helplessly fell away towards cracking down, unable to leap from the window of his fighter. I often thought of this, but of course if 'Len' was bang on about this Jerry being blacked out, then this imaginative reflection was for naught. In a mere moment,... this Me 109 came a crumper. A mere flash of fire, twisted metal and a pilot consumed by the physics of matter and energy colliding in a violent ending. This Jerry pilot, nor his fighter aeroplane, posed a threat any longer. He was now just another young man, future laid to waste and put down by cause of this Battle of Britain.
[Linked Image]

This was one of Richthofen's fabled flying elite, yet he had stepped off by chance just as he flew directly into 'Len's' reflector sight, never knowing he was being hunted. The bevy of rounds had sealed the Jerry's fate in the flash of an eye, and just moments later he was but a memory, a cloud of smoke and dust kicked up by the Isle of Wight in anger at his trespass. 'Lenny' pulled skyward, lessened the bite of his fan and began to climb as he scouted the sky for the rest of his mates.......

Elsewhere a Luftwaffe escort fighter along with his Rotte wing man overflew 'Burn's' Hurricane in their haste to attack the crippled RAF fighter. High above, one of the 109 pilots had sheared off the outer portion of his starboard wing using the deadly high explosive Minengeschoss rounds from his Me 109's newly installed 20 mm MG-FF/M wing cannons. Not only the wing was damaged though, 'Burn' himself had been struck in his lower back by shrapnel and could no longer feel nor move his legs or feet. Enduring the extraordinary pain, 'Burn' attempted to make a run at hastily taking his Hurricane down to touch bottom as VK-C's hydraulics were inoperable and the emergency manual pump was damaged as well. 'Len's' Merlin was revving wildly as she sprayed oil on the windscreen and shook frantically. Turning his upper body as far as possible, he could just see the Huns turning in on his tail. They were coming back around to finish their dirty work, when suddenly the thought of his lass Margret,...... Margret Camilla Evans, came to the forefront of his mind. She was behind in London and he thought of her soft beautiful red hair and of holding her fair skinned hand while walking on the trails in the rolling hills of Talgarth. They had been friends all along while attending grammar school, as their families lived just down the street from one another all throughout their childhood. The two had dated for the past three years and just in May of this year, 'Burn' found himself engaged to the most beautiful, witty and caring young woman he had ever known. They were to be married in December, but he longed for that moment now more than anything in the world. Oh to be with her at this moment,...he would give anything.
[Linked Image]

'Burn's' Hurricane had bled off speed drastically as his engine's life was certainly near its end. He could barely keep her flying level and simply could not maneuver adequately to shake these two Huns. As we found out much later, these Jerry B-astards were from Jagdgeschwader 3. This Rotte was merely cleaning up what the Jagdgeschwader 2 Richthofen pilot had initiated higher above. As the two Huns, Yellow 3 and Black 5, approached 'Burn' from his six, they closed at over 200 mph. Beginning at approximately 300 yards, Yellow 3 fired one long burst,... Thwack, Thwack, Thwack,..... a large size fireball flashed from the nose of 'Burn's' Hurricane and then snuffed out as quickly as it had ignited. Yellow 3 pulled off and Black 5, flying in line astern, prepared to mete out his assault. 'Burn' again reached to open his canopy and pushed it back, hoping it would lock this time, so that he might be able to roll out of his kite. At 250 yards Black 5 gave a long burst! This volley of explosive rounds struck all around and within the cockpit, and the broken glass of several of the main panel's gauges rained on 'Burn'. Hot glowing shrapnel, wedged behind the instrument panel, shown like an orange red light illuminating 'Burn's' feet. With the canopy finally locked open, he had released the pin from the restraint belts and was struggling in an attempt to pull himself out of VK-C when another short burst was put forth by the second Jerry fighter, Black 5... Thwack,..Thwack,... Thwack,Thwack! That is when it came to pass,........... 'Burn' was mortally wounded. One moment he was endeavoring to desperately bail out of his stricken Hurricane, ........ and the next,...... 'Burn' was gone.
[Linked Image]

All the while 'Burn's' Merlin, though severely damaged, pulled his kite downward in a continuous dive. His beloved VK-C slowly rolled over and over while she unhurriedly delivered 'Burn' into the Southern English Isle. He had given everything which he possessed, all that he could muster, but he would not be coming home to Middle Wallop any longer. For me, the memory of 'Burn' shall forever be on the Isle of Wight and whenever I should visit in gentler times, the image of this young man from Talgarth, so innocent yet so brave, will be forever etched within my mind. I shall never forget Fl Off Phillip Carlson Coburn.

Footnotes from Paton Wednsforth: October 5, 2018:
Chris made this entry on July 28, 1940 and I felt it pertinent to include here.
“It was my unfortunate duty today to deliver the wedding bands previously purchased and 'Burn's' stepping off letter to Margret. A task which I shall always regret having to fulfill as the sorrow with which Margret took the news was greater than I could bear to witness. Upon experiencing this grief, The Battle for Britain became real for me, no longer a young boys adventure, but a primordial struggle between good and evil to the death, deserving my utmost sacrifice to see it through. As I left Margret with her unbearable grief, my anger flared as I exited her apartment house. Once outside, I repeatedly struck the first tree I spotted. The anger I felt was explosive and I vowed to avenge 'Burn's' loss of his life with as many victories as I could bring about over these Jerry B-astards!”

Reports collected later would show that the numbers were greatly in favor of the Luftwaffe's escorting Me109s. It appeared that at least four Schwarms of fighter aircraft were operating in the battle over Ventnor. Two schwarms from Jagdgeschwader 2 Richthofen appeared to be assigned to high cover at an estimated 10,000 feet while two additional schwarms from Jagdgeschwader 3 would roam freely at 7,000 feet ahead of the Ju87 Staffel they were escorting. Once Jagdgeschwader 2 was spotted above, all of the boys from No. 238 Flight attempted to climb and fight the 109s in spite of Jerrys' advantage. As they entered the fight already disadvantaged, the boys reserved the option to dive away to what they thought would be relative safety. Ordinarily this was one way to level the playing pitch or simply escape, but today these tactics which commonly would safeguard their flight, ultimately ended up positioning the boys of No. 238 within a trap. This played directly into the hands of the Jerry pilots of Jagdgeschwader 3, one of which, White 4, espied one of the boys from No. 238 making a dash to escape his Jerry comrades from above. He quickly placed himself in position behind Plt Off Arthur Chamberlain or 'Art' as the boys in the Squadron knew him.
[Linked Image]

'Art' never new the Hun was stalking his Hurricane and the Jerry pilot's attack was swift and precise. 'Art' was looking above to see if he was free of his initial attacker and was just beginning to climb when,... Thwack, Thwack,..Thwack! The initial strikes hit the tail of VK-E and 'Art' instantly jinked to the starboard. As he executed this maneuver, out of the corner of his eye, he witnessed his starboard wingtip separate from the main wing. He immediately jinked back to the port side and desperately looked to his six just as the Jerry pilot unleashed another squirt. As 'Art' began to roll back to his starboard side the port wingtip was lost. The tracers inched closer to his cockpit as he violently once again pulled back to the port side at which time his Merlin was struck repeatedly by countless exploding cannon rounds.
[Linked Image]

Smoke was poring from the port manifold of his Merlin engine. 'Art' knew this was critical and he dove away to his port side trailing a great cloud of thick rich black smoke. The Hun pilot broke off knowing his enemy was finished. Fortunately 'Art' was above The Isle of Wight and he opened the canopy to clear the cockpit of smoke as he quickly surveyed the landscape for a suitable plot to touch bottom upon.
[Linked Image]

He spotted a pleasantly level patch of land, but there was an abundance of livestock milling about and scads of fences which had the appearance of being quite hardily built and rather unforgiving. Something in the back of 'Art's' mind told him, 'do not to go crashing through those fences'!!! At that particular moment he spotted an especially straight road running betwixt the pastures and he resolved to touch bottom on it. With nil landing gear nor flaps, 'Art' did the best he could to diminish his kite's speed, side slipping with his rudder and pulling her nose up for brief periods of time. Ultimately the moment had come and he closed the canopy and shuttered off the fuel cock, thus silencing his Merlin engine. 'Art' glided her down and with a loud scraping noise his Hawker Hurricane began to slide hastily down the gravel and dirt road. At once he saw one propeller blade pointing almost straight up and bent as the prop ceased to windmill and the nose dipped sharply. For a moment 'Art' thought his crate may attempt to flop over on her crown, but she rocked back and settled into a deafeningly loud grinding slide. Now he was along for the ride and VK-E slid off the road somewhat as the gravel and rough ground stripped off the radiator intake and the skin of her underside. A great cloud of dust raised up behind the Hurricane as she slid across the countryside, eventually coming to rest. 'Art' immediately thanked the man upstairs for sparing his life, popped the canopy back, pulled the seat harness pin and stepped out onto the wing of his beaten Hurricane. A Bedford appeared within minutes carrying one man brandishing a pitchfork and another with a double barrel side by side shotgun. After a short interrogation, with 'Art's' hands raised high in the air the entire time naturally, the farmers were satisfied that he presented no threat, and they proceeded to take him to the nearest telephone in Ventnor so that he might telephone the Duty Erk at Middle Wallop..
[Linked Image]

The town of Ventnor was just a short drive away and as the Bedford arrived the three men witnessed two yellow nosed B-astard fighters strafing the city streets and buildings. The farmer who was driving the truck quickly pulled it under a row of trees bordering a wheat field. Each of the men hastily got out of the truck and moved swiftly towards the buildings on the edge of town. They spotted a coal bin with double doors leading under one of the buildings. After opening the doors and seeing the coal chute, the first two quickly slid down into the black dusty bin with the last man pulling the heavy wooden doors closed behind him as he to entered the dank black cellar. In the dark they listened and waited for the strafing planes to vacate the area.
[Linked Image]

This was very uncharacteristic but these yellow nosed B-astards must have become separated from the flight of Stukas and decided to instill panic in Ventnor. Each Me 109 buzzed the town shooting up the buildings and any target of opportunity. As the men hid in the coal cellar, they could hear random gunshots and shotgun blasts as the 109s screamed past. The local townsfolk would not sit idly by while these two Huns shot up their town. Lacking a proper Ack Ack gun, they used what they had at their disposal to defend Ventnor in the only way that they possibly could.
[Linked Image]

One of the boys, Flg Off Paul Seabatian Thayer or 'Seb' as we all knew him, spotted the Staffel of Stukas after diving away from the escorts higher above. He swiftly made course to attack as he watched the Huns en-route to their target at Ventnor's CH station. As quickly as 'Seb' made his initial turn to the port side, a yellow nosed B-astard screamed past just above his canopy. 'Seb' was determined to disrupt the dive bombers and chose to dive in their direction in the hopes that the Jerry 109 pilot would lose him against the backdrop of the Isle. Another Me 109 roared past, this one without a yellow nose, and 'Seb' knew this was not good. Coming into sight of two of the Ju87s, he could see an aeroplane in the distance smoking badly and going down. Just at that moment 'Seb' saw smoking tracer rounds shooting past his canopy and the little yellowish orange back ends of the rounds themselves as they traveled out in front of his Hurricane........
[Linked Image]

As he chased down the Stukas a barrage of rounds hit 'Seb's' Hurricane exploding everywhere,.. Thwack,..Thwack,..... Thwack,Thwack! The assault seemed to last an eternity. As he quickly glanced back over his left shoulder while rolling slightly port side to make a pull, 'Seb' could see one Hun maybe 300 yards behind him and wondered how this Jerry could land so many rounds from his deflected position. What 'Seb' could not see was the yellow nosed Me109 sitting directly on his six just 80 yards astern while absolutely clobbering his Hurricane. His port side chatter box access panel was blown away and fire from the nose of his lass was licking down the port side of the fuselage!
[Linked Image]

As 'Seb' attempted to pull harder to escape the hammering he was taking, ….... no response! The elevators would not work and the ailerons were almost useless as well. The Minengeschoss rounds were tearing his kite to pieces!!! This was the first time 'Seb' had been struck by enemy rounds and a bit of panic paralyzed him momentarily as the fire raged from the port engine cover and his port wing was showing its' inner workings! Pieces were flying off from all over VK-H and there seemed to be nothing 'Seb' could do to stop or escape this assault!
[Linked Image]

Regathering his composure and looking to his starboard wing 'Seb' could see that it to was severely damaged and that he must now think seriously about jumping from the window. The rounds came again,.. Thwack..Thwack... Thwack!!! As 'Seb' reached to roll the canopy back, he found it to be inoperable. Over and Over he fumbled with the latch all the while he could feel the heat in the cockpit building. Though the fire was not yet inside, 'Seb' knew that it was only a matter of time before it would enter the compartment and burn him alive. After several attempts to slide the canopy back failed, 'Seb' hesitantly reached for the emergency breakout panel. He had heard the stories of other RAF pilots and knew that once the panel and window were broken out that the fire from the engine might be sucked into the cockpit with him. It was a chance he had to take, hoping this would free the canopy and allow him to slide it back and bail out of his Hurricane.
[Linked Image]

As 'Seb' reached for the break out panel he saw one of the Me 109s race by to his port side. The fire had seemed to quell from under the bonnet and 'Seb' felt better about breaking the side canopy. Thwack, Thwack,...Thwack..Thwack! The strikes came again while 'Seb' worked feverishly to free himself.
[Linked Image]

Looking to his starboard rear 'Seb' saw the second Hun hastily passing his crippled Hurricane. He watched the Jerry pilot insultingly salute on his way past then rolling starboard he pulled his control column to head home to France. Feeling the sting of a shrapnel wound on his right arm for the first time, 'Seb' broke the emergency panel out which allowed him to release the canopy. It flew off with a rush as he released the restraint belt pin, pushed up with his legs and was sucked straight out of his Hurricane by the almost 200 mph wind.
