SC Tobias Chester Mulberry VC, DSC&Bar, DSO
44 confirmed kills

Toby’s flight was ordered to destroy the enemy observation balloon south of Monchy-le-Preux. Yes, it is the same dreaded balloon as so many times before. Everything was white, difficult to distinguish and impossible to navigate. The only positive was that at least the airplanes would be easy to spot against the ground.
Toby fired at the balloon with the Vickers and followed with the rockets. There were some hits, but the balloon remained undamaged. His hart sunk seeing that the balloon continues to resist his attacks. With resignation he turned around for another pass just in time to see Hervey loose his Le Prieurs and set the cursed gasbag on fire. Mulberry let out a cry of joy. The balloon was on fire and Mulberry was in Heaven! They quickly turned for home, but didn’t get far.

A gaggle of enemy machines descended on them from above. As the enemy planes made their diving attacks Toby put some distance between the furball and himself. He observed and dove back into the action. In the ensuing melee Toby singled out a solitary Halberstadt and quickly got on his tail. The Hun took a beating and eventually crashed into the frozen landscape below. Mulberry noticed another machine chasing one of the Pups. He was there in a flash and the second Halberstad was eating frozen dirt just beside his unfortunate colleague. He then watched a swirling battle not too far and decided to lend a helping hand. Toby was on the enemy’s back soon enough and filling his tail feathers full of the lead rounds. The German had soon enough and was forced to land near the trenches. But the fight wasn’t over yet. A Nieuport buzzed ahead in pursuit of one of the last Halberstadts and Toby followed them both to make sure the Boche didn’t get away. Unfortunately the all too eager Nieuport pilot misjudged the gap between the planes and collided with the enemy. Both men perished leaving smoking craters close each other.

Only one of Mulberry’s claims could be confirmed. By now he wasn’t surprised. It seemed like par for the course.

Raine, another chapter in a long career. Excellent!
Fullofit, glad to see Toby finally got the monkey off his back.
Carrick, those scrambles are really fun. If you live!

I’m keeping up with my flying but been awful busy. Here is a condensed version to bring Frank up to date.

Sgt. Frank Lucas
54 Squadron
Chipilly

The move to the new aerodrome went well. Frank looked at the bright side. He was still close to Ameins. On the 11th they were finally in the air again. “A” flight was to escort 3 BE’s to bomb an army base near Monchy. Clear skies! What a change. And snow! Frank had never see. Such a sight. Right after meeting up with the 2 seaters the flight was jumped by 6 Halbs. Frank latched on to one of them and he and Charlie tag teamed the poor fellow. Frank got the killing shot and watched it crash in a field on our side of the lines. Gaining altitude he spotted Archie to the west. He headed in that direction and soon saw a Pup and Halb in a turning fight. Frank easily rolled in behind the Hun and scored hits. The Hun tried to disengage to head home but it was too late. Frank saw his bullets go into the cockpit and the machine rolled over and exploded on impact.

Jan. 12. A routine patrol of the lines and no contact. Franks 2 claims were confirmed.

Jan 13. Today the flight was to take down a balloon NW of Cambrai. Everyone missed with the rockets but Frank watched the sausage explode under his machine gun fire. His claim was confirmed that day.

Carrick, you and I are suffering the same annoyances, damned Frenchmen!

MFair, three victories in two days? Hats off to Frank!

Oberleutnant Lazlo Halász,
Jasta1, Proville, Flanders
January 13th 1917

There was a palpable sense of distress and worry in the officers' mess as evening approached. The daylight had already faded and an orderly was busying himself lighting the oil lamps in the dining hall. About a half dozen pilots from Jasta 1 were sat at the long oak refrectory table, nursing various drinks, most of them of the alcoholic variety. The day had started strangely. At 10am that morning the men had marched out into the glistening white landscape and mounted their Albatros machines. High above them Lazlo had heard the characteristic whining of a Nieuport's engine. Looking up, directly above their field he counted no less than seven of them in formation at about 1,000m. Grinding his teeth he had pressed the starter button and the Albatros had roared to life. Glancing upward a second time, to his amazement he'd seen one of the Nieuports peel off and start to descend in a steep dive toward the waiting Albatri. Lazlo thought to himself, this maniac is going to have a shot at us before we even get into the air. His Jasta crew were already taxiing down the field to take off. Lazlo gunned the engine and followed.

Only moments later, Lazlo found himself in a twisting dance with the lone Nieuport. Perhaps this fellow thought they were still equipped with Halberstadts. Well he'd be regretting that assumption by now. Gradually, Lazlo was able to work his Albatros into an advantageous position. The French pilot knew it, and as Lazlo had guessed, tried to break and run. However, the DIII was easily a match for the French machine. Lazlo noted the lack of an overwing gun on his opponent's mount. So, he must have the Lewis gun, but that won't do him any good when I'm on his tail, he thought, as he pursued his enemy. Coming close to the ground now, Lazlo was aware of other machines joining the fray. A sudden, loud crash and Lazlo found himslef flying through a cloud of brownish smoke. He briefly noted a flaming wreckage below. No time to consider whether friendly or foe, he stayed on the Nieuport's tail. By heavens, it was proving tough to bring down, but gradually he could tell his bullets were taking their toll. The Frenchman slowed and Lazlo closed, firing repeated bursts, until eventually the Nieuport plunged earthward, exploding into a small wooded area beneath him. He smiled grimly to himself and began to look around for his companions, readying to resume the real business of the day, a tour along friendly lines around Monchy. There was no sign of the other Nieuports. Eventually Lazlo was joined by three of his flight, but his wingman was missing. Lazlo decided they should press on. Climbing to 2,000m he looked down at the shining white landscape. So beautiful and yet, he dare not become too transfixed. He guided his men up to the lines and began the search for enemy machines.

After 20 minutes or so, Lazlo suddenly caught sight of two small dots down low over the lines, headed north. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a spyglass to check. Yes, enemy machines! They would be completely unaware of their peril. He banked his Albatros right and began to descend toward the machines. It all happened so quickly after that: Lazlo should have checked to ensure his flight mates had seen him commence the attack, but he was still excited from his earlier battle, and wanting more. Suddenly he saw a string of bullets zip over his left planes. In that split second his first thought was that his own wingman was firing at him. Stupid fool! But then he remembered that his wingman hadn't been there in the first place! As this realization dawned, he pulled the stick violently to the right. Not in time! A searing pain shot through his left shoulder. He knew instantly he'd been shot. Quickly, he began weaving his Albatros left and right, applying stick and rudder to throw his machine toward the ground below. A quick glance at the compass. He was headed east. Good! Don't stop turning! A searing pain swept over him as another bullet struck him somewhere. It felt like his left thigh was on fire! More weaving. Mercifully, he reached 20 metres and began to look for a clear place to land in the scarred landscape. Fence! Pull up! There, to the right, a clearing. Gently does it, skating in on one wheel, ice grinding beneath his machine, vision, blurring, every sense tingling, Lazlo managed to finally bring his machine to a halt. He was feeling very light headed, but stayed conscious long enough to register two Nieuports circling above. Then, voices! Several of them. He had managed to land a short distance behind friendly lines. He felt himself being carefully lifted from the cockpit.

"This fellow is humongous!", one of the men cried. "Get up here and give me a hand will you!". Lazlo was dragged from the cockpit, over the wing and down to the ground. Several more men joined in to haul the big pilot to an area less exposed. His body felt like it had been dragged backward through a building site... which was exactly what had just happened! . There they stayed until darkness descended, and they were able to get Lazlo transported to the nearest field hospital, about seven miles to the northeast.

Victory # 9...

Shot down!!

Carrick, another safe encounter with die Rotkäppchen.

MFair, Frank is keeping busy. Congrats on the confirmation of the latest three claims. What is he up to now?

Harry, what a day! What a fight! That Nieuport had do have a bullet hole in every single component. And then a sneak comes along and spoils the fun. That had to be some crack shot to get Lazlo while he was maneuvering wildly as he was. Hope the big man survived this ordeal. Don’t keep us in suspense.

45 confirmed kills

The two Caudrons from Esc 202 were hanging below Toby’s flight doing some reconnaissance work of the front lines between Arras and Bapaume. As they were swinging around for another circuit Mulberry noticed the ‘A’ flight through the snow squalls mixing it up with the enemy and decided to join in. He caught up with a Roland and chased him all the way down to the deck. Toby could barely see his opponent and was relieved when he finally brought him down south of Arras after ripping one of the wings off. Somewhere in this insanity Huskisson found another one and took him out as well. Toby’s claim was denied out of hand. In this weather no one could see a thing.

Carrick, well I’m running out fast! Read on.

Sgt Frank Lucas
Jan. 14 1917

While on a patrol of enemy lines near Monchy the flight dove on a pair of Rolands. Frank was above and when one went under him 500’ lower. He rolled over to get on his tail and flew straight into a cloud. Blind and disoriented he blipped his engine to slow his speed. When he came out of the cloud the Roland was right there. They both fell to the ground in a fireball.

Double crap Gents! I’m off on another hunt for a few weeks. I’ll catch up when I’m back. You stellar pilots be safe. I’m getting a love hate relationship with this sim!
