I don’t know much about the early history of Rush. Why did the original drummer leave after one album?

I've heard conflicting reasons. One was that he was let go, partly for being too much of a partier (booze), but also due to musical differences (preferred straight-out Rock [like first album] vs. the weirder direction Alex and Geddy wanted to go, and did so with Neil). John was also diabetic and there was concern for his health as they were preparing for their first US tour. I've also heard that John wasn't interested in grueling touring (as a starter band) and was ready to leave. I don't know if anyone on the outside really knows the entire truth.
I understand they occasionally ran into John (who died 2008 at age 55) in Toronto and there were never any hard feelings.
EDIT: I wondered about the span of their ages and looked up their BD's, but they're very close...

Thanks for that info Mark!
As far as musical direction goes, the irony with Rush is that the first album is indeed straight up rock but then they went the progressive route for several albums and then they adopted a largely mainstream sound by the late 80's.

Yup. But the older I get, the more I appreciate the softer Rush (which IMO, still has an edge to it vs. true Soft Rock which is usually a love song). Some of the really hard Rush is mostly nostalgic (same with Metallica and others), but I really do still enjoy it. I just doubt I'll ever warm up to new Hard Rock or Metal again, it's not in me anymore. No complaints, I have enough music already, including every Rush album.

If you don't mind, I'm going to continue this on your "Music truly is relative" thread.

Just wanted to note that some softer Rush also includes early songs like "Tears" ("2112") and "IV. Panacea" (middle of "The Fountain of Lamneth"). I enjoy the slower-paced downtime, as well as "Closer to the Heart" and "In The End" compared with, say..."Anthem" and "By-Tor & the Snow Dog". I would never want the really soft tunes removed from the album experience, even if I don't usually listen to those songs as playlist singles (not going to treadmill to "Rivendell").
Everyone agreed in 1987 that this was a song too far...
Yeah, not really a Rush song, is it? And yet, I enjoy it with the rest of "Hold Your Fire"...today, anyway.

^ Glad we got at least one 'mustache Neil' on these threads.

"Xanadu" is one of my top 10 Rush songs of all time.
