I’m in shock. I had no clue he had brain cancer.

We have lost a wonderful soul and talent. RIP.

Yeah, his illness was part of why Rush disbanded a couple of years ago frown

Shocked.
Incredibly talented, a Canadian legend.
He had to deal with some extreme personal tragedy, the loss of his 19 yr old daughter, and the death of his wife 5 months later.
Fortunate enough to have seen Rush during the Grace Under Pressure tour, in Toronto.

I can’t even imagine how Geddy & Alex must feel, they had to know it was coming but having been together so long it has to be more like losing a sibling than a bandmate. Everything I’ve read said they were true friends who hung out together, not like members of many bands who don’t really see each other outside of writing, recording, and touring. RIP Professor.

Now, at last I fall before
The Fountain of Lamneth
I thought I would be singing
But I'm tired, out of breath
Many journeys end here
But, the secret's told the same
Life is just a candle
And a dream must give it flame

The key, the end, the answer
Stripped of their disguise
Still it's all confusion
And tears spring to my eyes
Though I've reached a signpost
It's really not the end
Like Old Sol behind the mountain
I'll be coming up again

I'm in motion
I am still
I am crying
I am still
I'm together
I'm apart
I'm forever
At the start

Still, I am

Probably not. The band stopped touring (R40 was in 2015) almost a year before his diagnosis. His problems with tendonitis and a desire to spend more time with a very young daughter were his primary explanations at the time. His daughter is only ten now.

this really sucks.... a couple of my hero musicians have passed away in the last few years ( Gary Moore and Chris Squire ) but this was the worst.

I consider myself extremely lucky to have seen RUSH many times. Neil is going to be missed.

I saw them in concert in 1982.

The Signals tour for their Signals album, the one with the dalmatian on the vinyl record cover.

Was shocked when the news broke yesterday, had no idea.

Of the many Rush paraphernalia pics I've posted over the years (i.e. comprehensive CD and DVD collection), I'd like to re-post 4 of them...

Neil's books (pic is missing his first book, "The Masked Rider")...

[Linked Image]

"Ghost Rider: Travels on the Healing Road" is very personal, mostly about dealing with the loss of his daughter and wife.

Neil collaborated on a book written for Rush's "Clockwork Angels" album, his lyrics and story turned into a novel...

[Linked Image]

"Taking Center Stage" is a multi-DVD set of drumming lessons on how to play Rush songs (I've never had interest in playing drums but still enjoy this)...

[Linked Image]

Besides "A Graphics Novel" version of "Clockwork Angels", this was the last Rush-related surprise package from my wife (she found the awesome book online), including their final documentary (also saw at theater)...

Thanks for music, the concerts, the documentaries and the books. May you RIP, Professor.

Signals tour was my first time seeing them at the Sporthalle in Heidelberg, Germany. Dang, this is a heck of a loss for us but especially for his family. I pray that the good Lord welcome Neil into heaven and bless his family.

Definitely the best video of one of my absolute favorite Rush songs.

I thought they would go on forever. I love Rush, and I loved Neil's drumming. Rest in peace, you made so many people happy.

Been playing my favourite song of theirs, Bravado with a nice whisky.

Thank you NH2112, Camera Eye is one of my favorite Rush songs and I've never seen this video - it blew me away! Seriously, thank you - I needed this. smile

Same here, I thought it was absolutely brilliant. I think I’m going to read Dos Passos’ America Trilogy next, like I’ve been saying I’d do as soon as I finished my current book for the past few years now, since it provided much of the inspiration for the lyrics.

I read somewhere, years ago, that Neil played more notes in a single song than most drummers play in a lifetime.
