AMD Promises High-End Radeon RX Navi GPUs and Navi APUs – Heavily Investing in Ray Tracing For 2020 Discrete GPUs

In a round table Q/A session with the tech press, AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, promised high-end Navi based Radeon RX graphics card and Navi based APUs.

[AMD CEO] "You should expect that we will have a high-end Navi and that it is important to have it....I don’t usually comment on unannounced products."

Intel's main selling point now is their "over 5GHz" top core speed which confers a small advantage in lightly threaded software. The latest high end AMD CPUs have caught up on Instructions per Clock, cores, etc.

To get those high "boost" speeds, Intel "Factory Overclocks" their designs -- overclocked CPUs run hotter and can fail prematurely without excellent cooling.

AMD Zen 3 ‘4000 Series’ Processors And 600 Series Chipset Landing In Late 2020, Getting USB 4.0

The 600-series chipsets will not only support USB 3.2 but 4.0 as well.

500-series chipsets including the B550 and A520 to start production in the first quarter of 2020. The 600-series counterparts, on the other hand, will be getting some serious upgrades

AMD's SVP, Forrest Norrod, has previously revealed how Zen 3 is going to bring an entirely new chip architecture along with other key enhancements.

Large layoffs at Intel happening now

layoffs were at DCG/DPG as predicted but other areas not expected to get cut were hit as well.

We previously said that 25-33% of DCG would be laid off, and that appears to still be happening but not all of it is happening today.

Definitions: Data Center Group (DCG), Data Platform Group (DPG)

Makes sense. AMD is taking business away from Intel in the Data Centers. Thus, Intel needs fewer employees.

Moreover, the departments were not ideally competitive. Thus, a reorganization to compete more successfully.

Competition is good smile

How big will big Navi be?? A salty rumor:

Quote
AMD's big Navi, NVIDIA killer based on RDNA2 will have 80 CUs, capable of 17.5 TFLOPs of compute at 1700 MHz

This particular rumor stems from Chiphell, which has proven to be a whimsical source of information in the past - albeit with a fairly high rate of success. We have seen AMD's new Navi family pop on EEC filings so it is clear that the company is preparing to launch a new lineup - and the only question that remains is about the specifications. While 80 CUs is something that is very much plausible, it is unclear at this point whether this rumor is authentic.

Intel slashes the cost of Comet Lake-S CPUs

Cheaper than expected

One of the good signs that AMD's competition is hurting Intel is that it appears to be dropping the prices of its consumer processors.

PC makers have revealed that Intel will make the move in the second half of 2020 in a bid to defend its market dominance [over AMD]

Nvidia similarly slashing the price of its GeForce RTX 2060 to better compete with [AMD's] pricing.

Competition is ... smile

AMD Zen 3 CPU Support Added To Linux Kernel As We Get Closer To Official Announcement

It looks like we are getting more closer to the launch of AMD's Zen 3 CPUs as microcode for the upcoming lineup has been added to the Linux Kernel

The latest code adds EDAC (Error Detection and Correction) support for AMD's Family 19h which refers to the Zen 3 architecture

AMD has so far confirmed themselves that Zen 3 brings a brand new CPU architecture which helps deliver significant IPC gains, faster clocks and even higher core counts than before.

Some rumors have even pointed to a 17% increase in IPC and a 50% increase in Zen 3's floating-point operations

AMD: Big Navi Radeon RX GPUs Are Going To Disrupt 4K Gaming, Similar To How Ryzen Disrupted The CPU Segment

AMD's Radeon Product Management Lead, Mithun Chandrasekhar, spilled the beans that like Ryzen, Big Navi is going to disrupt the 4K gaming segment.

“With the Radeon 5000-series we are essentially covering 90-something-percent of the total PC gamers today,” says Chandrasekhar. .. the vast majority of them are at 1440p and 1080p.

..are we going after 4K, and going to similarly disrupt 4K? Absolutely,.."

Ray Tracing is a primary feature of the RDNA2 architecture

AMD's 4Q/FY19 Financial Report: Revenue up 50% from 4Q18, Debt Halved

Within Q4, AMD paid down a lot of debt - down from $1087m in 3Q19 to $563m in 4Q19. AMD's strategy here is to pay down debt and strengthen its balance sheet..

Computing and Graphics was the lion's share of the earnings gains, with revenue for this segment up 69% year-over-year thanks to strong sales of both Ryzen processors and Radeon GPUs for gaming. Operating income was also up thanks to the higher margins on Ryzen processors. Now that AMD can compete and win on performance, they don't need to sell at such a discount, which is of course what is helping them turn the corner.

Rumor from a site that is usually right: Apparently, Intel is competing on price -- for business customers only. They just don't want the public to know because it makes AMD more relevant.

Quote
Intel officially craters Xeon pricing

Intel is slashing prices to OEMs

by slashed we mean far more than 50%, but the MSRP didn’t change. Officially there was no change, that pipsqueak AMD has no effect on pricing, carry on folks and look away.

Intel likely could not price their wares against AMD without selling at a loss. No we were not joking, it was really that bad.

Occasionally selling at a loss is what Intel did over a decade ago when AMD had the better CPU. Except then, in addition, they illegally paid OEMs "under the table" to never use AMD (as proved in court). It worked for Intel and nearly put AMD out of business.
