I never even heard of some of these, although that's understandable as there was a vast library of games, including in some cases what I suspect were unlicensed variants.

You can probably easily add another 25 or 30 choices to the list.

Sweet! thumbsup

The only pic of my C64, next to TV/stereo (that was 1989, unpacking first Atlanta apartment after living with brother for 6 months while waiting for wife to finish college in Baton Rouge)...

EDIT: That might be my VIC-20, I owned both.

I did not have this game though...

I had Atari 800. I played with it so much Dad would threaten to take it away.

Anyone remember the Adventure games by Scott Adams?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventureland_(video_game)

I would play it all day.

Then later I played other titles of it on my friend's Radio Shack computer.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Adams_(game_designer)#Games

They came on cassette tapes.

I wanted an Atari 5200 so badly! I loved the sleek design and Defender port (awesome compared with the 2600...not saying much).

++++++++++

I was horrified the first time I saw this 1983 video on MTV, before Prince corrupted her (I love 80's chicks). Skip to 2:20. You don't do that to a man, you batshit crazy woman! eek2

The C64 had one badass sound chip for the time. Infiltrator was awesome on the PC, too.

I bought a Commodore 64 so early in it's existence that there weren't any games for it. I held onto it for about 6 months, and then sold it and bought an Atari 800. I still have that Atari 800 in the garage.

I only ever used a C64 in school in the 1980s. During those years at home I had a Tandy Color Computer 2.

I'm a bit interested in this:

I'm still having fun with the cheap Walmart 2600 knockoff (along with some retro Atari for PC),...

[Linked Image]

...but that new VIC-20/C64 looks very intriguing.

EDIT: Whoa, it lets you save your BASIC programs to USB!!! whoohoo

From here...
https://retrogames.biz/thec64

...I choose Retailers to go here...
https://retrogames.biz/thec64/retailers

...then I choose US > Walmart to get this...
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Retro-Games-LTD-THEC64-Mini-Computer-Gray-RGL001/228650387

This is the C64 Mini, not the full-sized version with working keyboard (you need a USB keyboard). But it only cost $44.99 USD!

The UK gets the Mini and also the full-sized working keyboard, but that one is "Currently unavailable".

++++++++++

And then I see this from 2011...
https://www.pcworld.com/article/224722/new_commodore_64_is_finally_here_for_real.html

"The old Commodore 64 originally cost $595..." "The new system, which also starts at $595..."

++++++++++

I think I'll first check Walmart for the ~$50.00 Mini version, then later consider the full-sized version depending on price and reviews.

Always loved the mechanical keyboard action of the original Commodores (both of mine were pre-owned, BTW).

I was too poor to have a Commodore 64 so hence the only gaming system I had for most of the 80's was the Atari 2600.

If I understand it right, the "maxi" full size version is in the $120 to $150 range with the joystick included. US launch hasn't hit yet, I think, just Europe? There are YouTube reviews of that full size version from some UK posters. IMO generally seems worth the price for my interests, kinda.

And yes... save to USB! Somehow my inner 10 year-old-BASIC-programming-self wants to do this.

I feel ya, PM.

I was lucky to have a hard working 5-year older brother who passed down some of his toys (before the internet and ebay made it easy to sell stuff). IIRC, he gave me the VIC-20 and my brother-in-law the C64 (or vice versa). Like always, I was years behind the times (still gaming on a 2600 w/13" B&W TV while listening to 8-tracks in 1985). Just look at that TV (upgraded to color) and those glasses...dam! biggrin

Gunship in that C64 video...very cool.

Lol. Dude, I recently covered QBASIC just for the nostalgia (although you can still do some nifty BASIC-like command-line batch file programming). I'd have fun with this and will look into it, especially for ~$150.00.

That Atari 800 had a F-15 Flight Sim game that was so real looking and ahead of its time considering the limited technology back then in 1984.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-15_Strike_Eagle_(video_game)

Look at some of the games that were available for it:

A Boomer moment (although technically I'm Gen X)...

I've always felt that I grew up in the right era, partly with experiencing the mainstream transition to a digital world. So much technology was completely new and fascinating, our minds being constantly blown!

Here is my list, based off the ones I remember playing the most:

Beach Head
Beach Head 2
Impossible Mission
Red Storm Rising
Airborne Ranger
Gyruss (sp?)
Dig Dug
Blue Max
Silent Running
Zaxon
Ducktales
Forbidden Forest
Maniac Mansion
Raid Over Moscow
Commando
River Raid

Thats about all I can think of, but I had hundreds of games and can't remember them all. Still have the C64, lots of great memories playing it!

Grew up with the C64 - so many great games for it (even if looking back now a lot of them are better in memory than reality biggrin )

Some of my greatest favorites was:

Ultima series
AD&D series
Bards Tale series
Wasteland
Battletech
The Hobbit
All Infocom games

My parents offered to buy me a C64 in 1985 from a neighbor, but when we were over there and I realized it only had a tape deck to play games and no disk drives I vehemently said "no." The thought of rewinding and fast forwarding just to play something--naive I was, seemed nightmarish. In retrospect, maybe I should have said "yes" and upgraded to a disk drive.

A year and a half later, though, we got a Tandy 1000 TX, and two years after that, our first Adlib sound card, followed by VGA. So that wasn't so bad.

Only had an Atari 2600 all 80s though; mooched off friends for their NES and around 1992 I used my grass cutting money to buy my own Super Nintendo. We had a 386 by then, also, but the SNES was awesome for playing while I downloaded stuff from BBSs at 2400 bps.
