"Year 1 of our Lord" (A1D) and "our Lord's year 1" (DA1) I'd give you. But "1 In the year of our Lord" (1AD) and "Of our Lord 1 year" (D1A) seem far too convoluted. However I'm familiar enough with the German language to know that its syntax is often out of phase with English. I'm not characterizing it as wrong, mind you (each one is correct within its language), just not the same. But the argument that "nobody would recognize any more what A and D stand for" is pretty much invalid because the overwhelming majority of people already don't know what they stand for.

A decade by definition is ten years, any ten consecutive years. We can start and end them whenever we wish. 2005-2014 was a decade.

The 1920's (1920-1929) was the decade of the 1920's. 1921-1930 was also a decade in length, but it would not be accurate to call that the "twenties" as that leaves out 1920 but includes 1930.

The 20s was 21-30. Its not our fault that people attribute things to the wrong decades. While a decade is just 10 years (like saying im a decade old at age 10) when you are talking decades in reference to the established date system it is year one to year ten so 21-30 is the decade of the 20s. It doesnt matter how silly it sounds to say 1930 is in the 20s... because it IS. 1930 was part of the 20s and 1990 was part of the 80s.

This year (2020) is the last year of the decade of 2010s.

And we as its creators don't feel ready to hear your annoyed jabber about it.

"because it is" isn't a convincing argument for me.

The 80's consisted of the 10 years, ie a decade, which ended with "8X". Seems pretty obvious.

That's not about German but Latin ...

This makes sense and gets my vote.

There are ten years in a decade:

2010
2011
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
2018
2019

How many years is that? Go ahead, mouse over each one and count them. I'll wait.

8 ?

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

OK, so a decade is ten years starting at #1, so that's

2011
2012
2013
2014
2015
2016
2017
2018
2019
2020

Good, now that's settled. I'll now rest easier at night knowing that.

Why start at 2011? 2010 is a perfectly valid number.

Because you could 1 2 3 not 0 1 2 3.

First decade was 1-10
Second decade was 11-20
third decade was 21-30

Now add 2000 years to that and you have your reason why this decade is 2011-2020.

If one is born in 1980, how old is one today?

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I assume you mean "count". Even then, that's just a convention, not even a mathematical rule; programmers, for example, almost always start counting from zero. There is no "right" or "wrong" here that you could somehow objectivize.
It makes sense to start a decade with the year 0 simply because of the way how numbers are compounded in English (or German). Just like twens start with 20, not 21, and end with 29, not 30. And Blondie's album "Best of the 80s" contains "Call Me" which is from 1980, QED.

Your historical argument doesn't work for me simply because the Historians stole a year. There is no Year 0. The decade before the first is from 10BC to 1BC, the next starts from 1AD to 10AD, but it's only 19 years in total.

Again you're assuming that year 1 AD matters, it doesn't. No one ever bought a calendar and hung it on their wall that stated "January 1 of the year 1" because that numbering system was not devised until over 500 years later.

So confusing, LOL!

But on the other hand, when I think about that we say:

the 50's, the 60's, the 70's, the 80's, the 90's and so on,

for me the decade starts at 0.

If it starts at 1, shouldn't we say the 51st, the 61st, and so on?

So I guess when I turn 70 I'll still be in my 60's for another year.

Cool.
