AMD announces Mini-PCs with Ryzen Embedded processors

ASRock Industrial, EEPD, OnLogic and Simply NUC are delivering mini PCs for industrial, media, and enterprise markets

“The demand for high performance computing isn’t limited to servers or desktop PCs. Embedded customers want access to small form factor PCs that can support open software standards, demanding workloads at the edge, and even display 4K content, all with embedded processors that have a planned availability of 10 years,” said Rajneesh Gaur, corporate vice president and general manager, Embedded Solutions, AMD.

AMD CTO Mark Papermaster: More Cores Coming in the 'Era of a Slowed Moore's Law'

incredible [core] density started with the EPYC lineup that now stretches up to 64 cores, besting Intel's finest in the data center.

On the consumer side, the Ryzen 9 3950X brings an almost-unbelievable boost to 16 cores on mainstream platforms, a tremendous improvement over the standard of four cores just a mere two years ago.

would [it] make sense to move up to 32 cores for mainstream users[?]

"I don’t see in the mainstream space any imminent barrier, and here's why: It's just a catch-up time for software to leverage the multi-core approach," Papermaster said. "But we're over that hurdle, now more and more applications can take advantage of multi-core and multi-threading.[...]"

"In the near term, I don’t see a saturation point for cores.

AMD announces Radeon Adrenalin 2020 Edition drivers

Today AMD launches its annual driver overhaul.

The 2020 Edition of Adrenalin promises to deliver a 12% performance increase over Adrenalin 2019 launch driver [not current 2019 driver package]. In total, there are 20 new features or changes to the driver stack.

Article Listing New Features

I found that the normal download methods I use were only showing the older 19-12-1 driver. Video Cards finally gave us this one:

Download from this AMD Page

I assume, the normal downloads will be working fine in a day or so.

Amid 14nm Shortage, Intel Breathes Life Into 22nm Pentium G3420

Intel has resorted to 22nm process technology due to the ongoing shortage of 14nm manufacturing ability.

[Bringing back a product] launched way back in Q3 2013

The Pentium G3420 will be targeted at low-tier systems, and, sadly, will bring significantly older technology to the market despite being at a similar price of its 14nm counterparts

Intel’s benchmarking antics questioned

Remember that FTC ruling…

The problem is simple, when Intel is losing at performance, they cheat on benchmarks. This isn’t done in the same way as the cell phone companies and GPU vendors do

AMD: We Never Dreamed We Would Be Ahead Of Intel

AMD's stock price recently $42, very close to its all-time high of $44 back before the dot com bubble burst in June 2000

[AMD] "We're delivering substantially better performance and better power [vs Intel]. And so, there's sort of no place to hide. Pretty much across the board in terms of the vast majority of workloads, except for maybe a few that have been very tightly tuned for some peculiarity of Intel’s ISA"

With TSMC looking to start risk production of 5nm, it doesn't look like Intel will be able to take back the lead anytime soon - or even achieve parity. .. Intel's CEO had also had a very frank discussion of what went wrong with 10nm and its really refreshing to see both of these companies making these usually banal conferences worth listening to with all this commentary.

People who bought AMD stock when it was below $2 (just a very few years ago) have gotten their money's worth -- over 2000% growth.

Meantime, as noted above in this thread, competition has forced Intel is onto a new path regarding its entire product line -- should be better for Intel and better for consumers.

Competition is good smile

A Chinese competitor to Intel and AMD CPUs? Zhaoxin might be the Answer!

Zhaoxin KaiXian Series Consumer CPUs - 7nm Process Node, Brand New Architecture, PCIe 4.0 & DDR5 Support

Not only is Zhaoxin working on 7nm production, at the same time Zhaoxin is currently in the planning phase for working on a sub-7nm design for both laptop and desktop CPUs.

Making a 7nm part does not guarantee performance -- the architecture does that. The architecture is "brand new". So, we must wait and see the actual performance.

AMD RDNA2 – Support for Raytracing & Variable Rate Shading

Microsoft has already laid out the development framework for Raytracing through the DirectX Raytracing, or DXR, API, and should be a main development tool for game developers working to implement raytracing within the upcoming [AMD Powered] Xbox

Variable Rate Shading, or VRS, is another feature to be included within AMD's RDNA2 GPUs.

gamers may expect to achieve increased playability at 4K resolutions and beyond.

As we know, Nvidia GPUs already have a version of Raytracing and a version of Variable Rate Shading. For it to really work requires a high end (expensive) GPU to be useful at 4K.

Since AMD's versions are expected to run well on a relatively inexpensive console (and a PC), it will be interesting to see if they've found a way to make it faster/cheaper than current Nvidia RTX.

12 Core CPU Battle – AMD Ryzen 9 3900X at 5.62 GHz Beats Intel Core i9-9920X at 5.92 GHz, Claims World Record

While Intel may have the general clock speed advantage, the recent overclocking sessions once again show that Intel's IPC lead is no more and Zen 2 has outclassed Intel's aging Skylake architecture and its several revisions.

This just goes off to show that Intel has lost all major leads they once had (IPC, efficiency, process, etc) to the Zen architecture

AMD comes out with new graphics drivers regularly. I don't note them here -- AMD users know about them and Nvidia users wouldn't care.

The latest, completely revised 2020 Edition Adrenalin 19.12.3 drivers are worth noting -- a fairly dramatic, functional update in a gaming interface. And, improved GPU adjustment features.

Heck, it automatically found a game I did not remember having installed (I have nearly 300 installed). I clicked on it. The Adrenalin drivers opened the appropriate interface. It played.

It does a lot more than that.

I click through several sites a couple times a day. Lots of questionable rumors lately. I haven't bothered anyone with those. This one seems to have some credibility (but still a rumor):

Quote
AMD Zen 3 CPUs Allegedly Features 17% IPC Gain Over Zen 2 Architecture, Ryzen 4000 ‘Vermeer’ CPUs to Feature Huge Performance Upgrade Over Ryzen 3000

AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs with Zen 3 Cores Allegedly Feature 50% Increase in Floating Point, 17% Increase in IPC Performance

According to AMD themselves, the Zen 3 design brings an entirely brand new CPU architecture, Significant IPC Gains and Faster clocks than ever seen before

in floating-point heavy applications, Zen 3 has the potential to be a big game-changer for the industry and especially the server market

The AMD Ryzen 4000 CPUs and X670 platform is expected to arrive by the end of 2020.., but we have to wait and see.

Relevant to "Future Status" of AMD, a very long interview with AMD's CTO:

Quote
An Interview with AMD's CTO Mark Papermaster

Interview

They discuss a broad list of technical subjects -- regarding AMDs future CPUs and GPUs -- design philosophies, etc. Each was interesting. But, this article is not for everyone and no secrets or future product specifications are revealed.

What I liked was this one: AMD does NOT follow a Tick-Tock approach with products or a rigid "generation" followed by "generation plus" approach. Rather, they have multiple design teams that "leapfrog" each other. The result is that each product is designed to be the best AMD can provide at the time of release. If a "plus" makes sense, they do it. If an all new design makes sense, they do it. Moreover, the designs take "everything" into account (whatever "everything" might mean in a particular case).

AMD To Push The High-Performance Computing Envelope Yet Again at CES 2020 - Event To Be Livestreamed on The 6th of January

The high-performance keynote would be hosted by AMD's CEO, Dr. Lisa Su, at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas.

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X .. is going to make a formal appearance at AMD's CES 2020 conference. We know that this is as high-end as HEDT CPUs can get, with 64 cores, 128 threads, 288 MB of cache, tons of PCIe lanes and a TDP of 280W while being aimed at the current sTRX4 socket-based TRX40 motherboards.

There are also preliminary rumors of a very powerful Navi GPU coming at some point this year. We'll see if that gets "teased" at the press conference.

AMD snatches up to 40% of market share in PassMark January 2020 update

AMD has snatched back up to 40% market share in the latest PassMark report (caution:... based only on devices running PassMark

AMD has previously admitted that it never thought it would ever beat Intel

This graph .. is representative of CPUs in use rather than CPUs purchased.

Eventually, Intel will make a performance comeback. Ideally to parity with AMD. Until then, AMD's sales will continue to grow at Intel's expense.

Eventual parity will keep prices low and performance high for we customers no matter which we buy. Competition is good smile

Whereas, Intel dropped the ball and unexpectedly lost their lead over AMD, I expect Nvidia to "do what it takes" to keep the top end -- and AMD to compete to arrive at parity.

AMD [Stock Price] Broke Through Its All-Time High Of $48 But Here Is Why It’s Just The Beginning

$2 just 5 years ago...breaking the $48 all-time high...and shattering a record that has stood for almost 20 years. AMD, in a very literal sense, is in the best shape it has ever been in.

Before I go any further, I will point out that market corrections can happen at any time, but as far as fundamentals go, AMD still has a few aces up its sleeve. I can break it down to two major points:

1. AMD's 7nm ramp hasn't finished yet and not only will Intel not be able to match that anytime soon, we expect [AMD] to retain its process lead (through TSMC) for the foreseeable future.

2. The company's GPU side of things (RTG) has been in cruise mode all this time. A comeback here would significantly increase the value of the stock.

$48 in the year 2020 is not as valuable as $48 was in the year 2000 (roughly 49 percent inflation in the USA since 2000). However, this is a new high and indicates the "Current Status" of AMD is moving upwards. The article believes that will continue.
