Is anyone watching the HBO series? It’s been years since I read the books but from what I recall of them the series tracks pretty closely. I’m trying not to compare it to The Golden Compass and the characters in that movie, although it’s really hard to picture Lin-Manuel Miranda as the same AEROnaut that Sam Elliot played in the movie. But to be fair there’s no one I could picture in a Sam Elliot role.

I think the series started off pretty slowly, but it did give time to develop characters and let you get to know what makes them tick. My favorite characters so far are Ma Costa, Farder Coram (James Cosmo from GOT), and John Faa. Mrs. Coulter in the series is much closer to the books’ character than Nicole Kidman’s portrayal was.

At the end of every episode I’m left anticipating the next, I guess that’s one of the greatest compliments you can pay a movie or TV show writer/director.

Yup,I'm really enjoying this series.

I've read The Golden Compass and seen the film. The series is getting close to where they left off so I'm very interested in what comes next, although I suspect that may be in series 2.

Ditto on Sam Elliot. I also much prefer Eva Green playing Serafina Pekkala.

My favourite character is Iorek, everyone should have an armoured bear as a friend smile

I watched the fist few episodes so far, on the recommendation by a friend. I have to say that at the end of the first episode I had really no idea what was going on. I am very impressed with the animal animations & rendering though, they are really stand-out even against full movie budgets. I'll continue with it & see if it starts to make any more sense.

It will start to come together, the first episodes are kind of like the splashes of paint thrown on a board by an artist. You don’t see the picture until he wants you to.

I've been enjoying it so far. I am hoping they are going to make (at least) the first trilogy, and not get stuck at the end of the first book again. (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass). It seems that a second season is already in production, so at least The Subtle Knife seems to be going ahead.

I really do need to get on and read the next book in the related series which I have had lying around for ~ a year... As there is a Second Book of Dust either out already, or due for release soon.

What all of this proves to me is that the Dark Materials books should have originally been a tv series instead of a feature film.

Well, from what I understand the plan was to make 3 movies but The Golden Compass didn’t do well enough to justify making the other 2 (372M box on 180M budget.)
