It's made it into my shopping cart and looking like I may pull the trigger before the sale ends.

I'm a little worried about my hardware (i5 6600/GTX970/16gb). I want it to look beautiful and that may be unrealistic if I want smooth game-play. Any thoughts?

I don't know about RDR2, but GTAV is very forgiving for lower specs. Heck, when I first installed it I was running a GTX 280 and it ran fine smile

RDR 2 is more demanding than GTA 5 graphically. It ran great on my rig at balanced settings. As far as quality, you can look through the many shots I posted in this thread and judge if you think that looks good enough. I reckon it will run fine for you Chucky, but the highest settings might not. You've got two hours to see smile

My specs are Ryzen 2600/GTX 1660Ti/16 GB

RDR2 also has more graphics options than any other game I've ever seen. You should be able to tweak it and adjust each parameter to how you want it to look balanced with how you want it to run.
Or just using the presets, I think there's something like 21 of them rather than the usual low, med, high, ultra most everything else has.

Congrats on the purchase! Be prepared to spend a ton of time with it. I've had it since release, and I find something new every time I play it.

As for your system, as mentioned above, the game has a ton of graphic options. The two right off the bat that I would turn down would be MSAA and the Water effects. They are huge power takers. Even the lowest water effect setting looks stunning.

You'll be fine with RAM as I'm running 16gig as well.

Once you get it dialed in, it should look incredible on your machine.

Just be prepared to spend some time with it, because it simply in my book is the greatest game ever produced.

Ok,so I used the default settings. A lot of them were set to ultra so I just ran the benchmark. I was getting around 30 fps.

In the game I'm seeing 25-35 depending on where I am and it does look really, really good. I'll work on fine-tuning it over the coming days.

I'm struggling with the game-play a bit as I don't normally play this type of game and prefer 1st person but I may switch between 1st and 3rd depending on what I'm doing.

One thing... the detail in this is amazing,I don't think I've seen anything like this before.

I have one problem, the sound (speech) sounds a little choppy. I'll have a look at the settings tomorrow,4 hours sleep last night means I can't keep my eyes open for much longer.

"V" on the keyboard will allow you to change between 1st and 3rd person. I started in 1st position because I hated 3rd position in other games, but I now find myself using 3rd person the most.

The controls in the game (there are a massive amount) will take some getting used to and may get a little frustrating at times, but stick with it. They become second nature.

As for detail in the game, you haven't seen anything yet. :-) Wait until you get into the open world. Your jaw is going to drop...

hey chucky, how the hell are you getting 30 on a 970 0on ultra :::

about sound, there is a bug, you have to set your output in windows, or the game keep switching them (stereo, surround), this causes dialogue to play low.
the settings that take the most FPS hit, water phisics, ultra can take up to 15-20 fps, i set mine to one lower than max, but you can take it to medium, you can only really see the difference in water crossings where the current is faster. Set tree quality to medium, high and ultra just bump the bump map a bit, but from a distance its the same bloody thing and there are TOO MANY trees in the game. tree tesselation is also a performance killed, also its bugged, you can see through the trees. looks nice but eats 8-9 fps
Global lighting can be set to medium or high, the difference is minimum, water reflection can be put to medium as well, the reflections are blurry regardless. Volumetric clouds can be set to medium and depending on how often you look up even low. unlike odyssey where this affect the amount of cloud formation, in RDR2 this setting controls the resolution the clouds are rendered. Some people recomend loweing fur, i set to ultra didnt feel any impact, but you know i have a 1070ti wich is basically a caped 1080.
shadows to high will give you a boost, i use it on medium bexause i like soft shadows and it feels nice. set the grass to high or medium as this affect the amount of shadow each blade has and how far they show up.

I'm not sure Blade.

I haven't changed any graphic settings yet. I just assumed the game defaulted to a 'recommended settings' based on hardware and went with that.

The early level is snow and poor visibility so I guess once I get away from that it will be a different story. I'll double check my settings and report back.

Maybe try the balanced setting. You still get ultra textures, but some of the fancy graphical witchcraft is reduced and may yield a few frames.

I have to say,the graphics options are some of most comprehensive I've seen for a game.

I wasn't sure if I did alter any settings so I've reset them to default and run the benchmark again. The quality preset says 'custom' and it doesn't look like I can alter that for a global setting. Is that right?

MIN: 24

MAX 40

AVG 31

I'm only running in 1080 btw.

If it is any help, I find that these 2 videos explain it well. Just go to 14:00 of the second video if you want to skip the tech background and see a list of settings.

Thanks Johan,that's interesting.

Out of curiosity I decided to let Nvidia GeForce Experience 'optimise' the game. It ran at a pretty solid 60fps but it looked terrible.

Some great shots Blade.

What software do you have running in the top left corner on some of those pics?

thanks, the soft is MSIafterburner, but you have to setup those info yourself, pretty easy though. just click the tab and rename it if you want

edit: also dont trust nvidia experience settings, i can play this game mostly ultra at 1512p (70% of 4k) and the gfe wants me to play all low, also in odissey i can play at 4k just fine at high and its settings want me to play at 900p while saying that i can play origins at 4k just fine. Also i think gfe has its own hidden game settings, because after i used on breakpoint it borked my rendering of far objects, and i noticed it did its own thing at origins as well, like setting stuff that you manually cant.
