Y'all,

It's been a busy week for a lot of folks, and I hope your plans for Thanksgiving are on track.

Finally got to talk to JRT and he sends his Hellos, thanks everyone for your concerns and says he is improving and getting stronger every day.
It won't be long before he is seen in this thread again.
His plans to be home for Thanksgiving are still depending on others, but he did say he will celebrate the occasion with family around.
An MRI today, (Monday) will help determine his plans.

Old Dux, I think he is checking on your missive. I did mention it to him.
It was good to talk with him.

Gents,

Black Friday has made it's way across the Atlantic Ocean and I am thinking of getting Garmin's latest swim-watch and a fan to circulate the air past me when I am doing indoor bicycling - stationary of course. I include that last bit of information for the benefit of Roger whom we hope will soon be able to join us again in our friendly banter. A fan is quite necessary in order to remove the heat generated by my vigorous pedalling.

When not pedalling I enjoy my electric fireplace, a heater which mimics the charms of a real fire without any of the work or soot associated with a real fire.

The weather has been muggy and moist when not windy and wet. Come the weekend the forecast is for slightly lower temperatures and perhaps a bit of sun.

Y'all,

The last time I was in Europe (way too long ago) I noticed some Halloween happenings and noticed what seemed to be the start of a movement. It was a little bit surprising, but fun.

To see the Black Friday mentality cross the ocean should be less surprising but somehow it isn't. At least the sales are not.
What would be surprising would be some of the not-as -nice aspects of the event, fights in the stores, etc. in Europe.
I have only experienced one Black Friday shopping day. Pretty sure that will not happen again.

Hope your new toy works out, MG.
One of the neat things about the season is the smell of of burning wood from fireplaces. Not as common since the price of wood is high now and like MG, we find the advantage of electric fireplaces is the convenience and looks.
This house has one of the gas-fed one, (rarely used due to the climate), but going outside the smell of someone using a wood fireplace seems to hit a spot.

That nostalgia might have to wait until after the weekend. After three days...and nights... of rain, the sun is peeking through. Due to the temperatures fog was in play here.
But that's much better than the frigid cold and snow a lot of the country has been experiencing.

Enjoy the family, the season and stay safe, y'all.

Y'all,

Welcome Home! Hope everyone got to see folks you enjoy being around and had a good time.
Now you are back home, safe and happy to make some memories.

Got to talk to Roger today and he wants to pass along his greetings and let you know he is improving and getting stronger.
He's been working on upper body strength and says he can tell the difference.
Yes, he's ready, he's been ready, to head for home and hopes a decision can be made by the end of the week.
He is more than ready to type a few words and thank all for the good wishes and support and catch up.

Along with many others, I finally caught the fever, not really eagerly, and took a hard look at some Amazon items.
I know it's hurting local business which is where I would prefer to shop, but it's hard to avoid the sirens.
One of the items now sitting in my home is a set of rudder pedals. Not fancy, fairly cheap, but rudders nevertheless.
The good news brought by my son when I was showing him the rudder pedals is that, considering my set-up, I may be able to maintain my instrument rating through my computer!
Granted, I have just the minimum and old equipment.

Man, they have liberalize the standards if that's true!
(As long as we don't go crazy and screw it up. Have watched too many You-Tube videos. But maybe I'm being too picky. Would hate to see the sky turned into what some road travel seems like sometimes and folk steer rather than drive.)
Think that may just be an old folk talking? Let me know.

Gents,

I'm mighty glad to hear that Roger is improving. Fingers and toes crossed that he will be heading home asap.

Fittop. Amazon and such sites have become indispensable to me due to their larger selection of brands and the sheer availability of various items. I'm not sure from where I would order my CD's were it not for Amazon. In the Capital area of Copenhagen I am not aware of any physical shops carrying CD's and were I to search out a specialist shop carrying the latest album by Harry Nilsson; Losst and Founnd, just released and containing songs that have been awaiting clean-up and release for 25 years, I'm not entirely certain I would be successful. Granted there are Danish web-shops but Amazon was there decades ago and the national webshops are littered with "popular choice" and national artists that frankly are not able to match the international level of quality. That goes for music as well as books. I'm relying heavily on e-books because of the great advantage in terms of saving huge amounts of shelf space.

The only drawback seems to be the risk of one's packages going astray and I am very much afraid that that is now happening one more time. A while ago a package from Amazon arrived torn up and missing half it's contents. Amazon were very nice about it and offered to replace the lost goods or return the money. Now my recent order for swimming watch and headwind fan for the indoor cycling has gone missing. The seller is a Danish company this time around and I have just contacted them to let them know that although the delivery service claim to have delivered the parcel, it is nowhere in sight at the pick-up point.

I do believe that you can actually maintain your instrument rating through the computer and the proper, approved software so that seems like a nice and cost-effective way of staying current.

Y'all,

Going to try to talk with JRT later today and hope he's gotten more good news.

We've been Prime members for years now, but lately it does seem that we've increased our on-line orders.
And to think, it started with the tempting offer of music and TV shows.
Of course, the Kindle book offers sweetened the pot.

After we cut cable, between PBS and the Brit shows, we did not miss cable at all.
We've added cable for a bit since the present provider internet speed is more than 20 times what the previous company was. But seeing the after-intro fee the cable portion is going bye-bye.
Antenna viewing is fine with us. Don't watch much TV anyway.

Catching up on some Prime and Netflix shows is interfering with trying out the new rudders. I do have to learn how to set them up and remove the inputs from the joystick.

Y'all,

Did manage to talk with JRT yesterday afternoon. Called a bit later than planned so I caught him at his meal time.
He feels he is doing much better and hopes to be heading for home in a week or so from the rehab and therapy center.
I'll continue to keep my fingers crossed for his return to full health.
His writings are missed.

The Christmas tree has been assembled, but the lights and decor are still mutely waiting in their boxes.
Not sure what it is I'm waiting for.
Perhaps it's the distraction of nice days outside, although the cold snap forecast has shown its effect.
But I suspect it's the built-in laziness and lack of excited child voices and going-ons.
It's hard to understand as I can see the child in ourselves. Hope it isn't the missing innocence.

There's hope, of course, I feel it every time I see a little one smile.

Hi Chaps,

Thanks for that, Fittop. I hope JRT manages to retrieve the message. I'm sure we all appreciate your contact with him and are therefore able to convey to us his progress. thumbsup

Gents,

Yuletide spells a hurting tummy from eating too much on family get-togethers and the annual, traditional Christmas luncheon on the job. Even when I downscale the portions and allow my self only one helping it is hard not to over eat since there are at least two types of herring, fried cod, salmon, meatballs, pork, fruit salads and cabbages, potatoes etc. Everything prepared the old fashioned way so cream and butter has been applied generously.

Otherwise I do not associate Christmas with much else than a good vacation during the darkest time of the year if not the coldest. Usually January or February sees to that. No small ones to experience the wonders of decoration and lights so I have contented myself with watching old Christmas shows on YouTube: The likes of Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Bob Hope and others have been saved by someone on tapes and are now freely available. Including the toupé in the cheese dip skit, just to remind me how also comedy has changed in the last 40 years or so. Yes, I grew up on those shows and I'll watch the Carpenters Christmas Show as well, while preparing for the ultimate nostalgia fix, administered directly into me through my eyes; the Disney "From All of Us.." although I'll skip the newest efforts since they aren't in what I think of as the classic or golden age of Disney.

If innocence was lost, which it indubitably must have been, I'll try my hardest to abstract from the fact during the Christmas Vacation. Perhaps I'll search out two very different Christmas movies; "It's a Wonderful Life" and "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation".

You may wonder, have we nothing of national origin to amuse ourselves with? (Royal We apparently) I am hard pressed to think of anything Christmas-y which would fit the bill.

Dux, do you have any UK traditional TV specials or movies that you watch during Christmas that relate to the season?

And best of luck at the generel election on Thursday, whatever your predilection.

Y'all,

Thank you, Sir, for reminding us of the sensory memories. Those sights and smells of the season.
They may differ by location but still pull us to their origin, be it herring, cod, pork, turkey, lasagna or tamales.
I can still feel the bustle of my mother's kitchen as she and an aunt makes lasagna; later the taste of the ex's fudge, now the lady's cheesecake that delights the palate.

Never have I gone in the woods to cut down a tree, but have delighted in a forest of them, marveled at the old-fashioned lights, and enjoyed the smell of fir, cedar, pine, the bustle of a corner lot selling just the right-size one.

You mention the songs, the music. I still have the tapes, reels and CDs.
Oh yes, the lady of the house got me started on her tradition of watching "A Christmas Story."

Right now might be a good time for me to dress the tree and locate the wrapping paper.

Yes, Dux, good luck in the election.

Y'all,

The Season is upon us. No more can we feel it is sneaking up on us.
Between the pre-Black Friday sales, the music in every store and the television ads I have no excuse not to be ready for the Christmas Season.
Most of the presents are bought, and I even got to see the granddaughter, now living in Georgia with her Army husband.
They are looking forward to being in Italy, his new PCS (permanent change of station) post.
Right after the start of the New Year, they will be winging their way to Europe.

To say she's excited is an understatement. She has been taking language lessons and says she's almost packed. -At least what little she's taking.

I have not heard from JRT this week, but will update all as soon as I can.
Wouldn't it be nice to be home for Christmas?

Gents,

Knock-knock. "Who's there?" - "Claus" - "Claus who?" - "Santa Claus!".

It would indeed be great if JRT would be able to come home for Christmas. Even if he had to go lightly on the Christmas Pudding. Fingers and toes crossed here that it will happen.

A great adventure ahead for your granddaughter, Fittop. I've never been to Italy myself but I am partial to the food, the music, the wine and the cars, amongst other things. Depending on where the husband is stationed there might also be some spectacular landscapes and scenery to take in. I must try to find some video on YouTube to put on the big screen when I am on the bicycle trainer. There seems to be no real opportunity to take to the roads as it is windy and wet most of the time here. if it is not any of the previous, it is the cold that stops me from venturing outdoors for too long..

Y'all,

I keep strongly hoping to open the thread and find JRT has stopped by.
No such luck so far.
I have tried to call him as couple of times and left a message but have not heard back.
Keep telling myself he's too busy packing to head home. I'm hoping I'm right.

It is almost Christmas. There are a couple of birthdays coming up in the family so here's hoping it all goes well.
Finally, the tree is up and the present are underneath.

The cat seems to have learned there is little incentive to nose around it.
OK, the vinegar-water mixture I sprayed around the base of it has faded to my old human sense, but I think she still notices it.

There is some fudge around the kitchen but I am limited in the amount I can filch.

I am hoping there will be a cheese-cake in my future, but please don't tell her.
Hate for her to know she's got something on me.

Since I lost my inside bike years ago, I best turn on the treadmill.
Maybe this time I should hop on it rather than just watch it run.

Y'all,

Breaking a trend, but it merits it. Just heard from JRT.

JRT will be home for Christmas, if only for a couple of days. But like you, I like that part of the news.

Not all the news is great... but...not all the not-so-great news are his.

Meanwhile...He sends a loud Merry Christmas to all of you guys.
He is looking forward to making a short entry here to thank you for your concerns.

And again, his wishes to all to have a great Christmas. He is in good spirits.

Gents,

It is very close to that time of the year, at least where I live, that many of my compatriots stuff their faces with duck, pork, white and browned potatoes, red cabbage, a sauce so heavy it will sink the Potemkin and risalamande for dessert. Presents will be given after dinner, and after the carolling of a few Christmas songs. Larger families might be able to join hands and walk (or dance) around the Christmas Tree. In other words; we're celebrating a day early compared with the English speaking world.

I wish you a very merry Christmas wherever you are, and a very special greeting to our pal Roger, who will be horrified to miss the opportunity to create this year's Official HWH Christmas Card and thus will have to look at the atrocity that I have been able to hack together in the space 5 minutes

Chaps,

Best wishes to all with the hope that JRT will indeed spend time at home this Christmas. Your greetings illustration is a most commendable offering Jens and will certainly meet with the approval of our absent friend! :thumbsup

This Christmas Eve I have avoided road traffic and walked to wherever it has been necessary. It has been like mayhem in the supermarket car parks and I'm grateful for being able to stay well clear.

On Saturday we will be doing our first gig at long last. A sound check last Friday at a local clubhouse went fairly well but unfortunately the bar was closed. santa

Y'all,

I have also been checking here daily for the ink of our friend and I am touched by McGonigle's artwork.
It is the touch JRT himself would have put on the thread.
You guys have been together so much longer.

The custom you mention of family getting together the night before Christmas is still followed by my smaller family now.
I haven't made the traditional lasagna this year either but the assortment of goodies works almost as well.
The image of my aunt and my mother working in the kitchen is still vividly in my head.

Dux is right about the traffic being a mess. He is a wiseman to avoid the commotion.

Not comforting is the thought that it might be as messy elsewhere as it is where the driver's licenses seem to be issued by mail.
It is probable a big reason for the increase of on-line ordering and the demise of malls.
But malls had their own allure. The scenery was nice.

Here's wishing Old Dux's first gig is a great hit, that both of you gentlemen and everyone reading this thread has:

a Very Merry Christmas, and a Great and Happy New Year!

And Roger gets to read this in his own computer at home.

Chaps,

Thanks for that Fittop. I would like to know that JRT eventually intercepted my email with the same zeal that he intercepted those three Ju88s a few months ago. How was he to know they were Blenheims?

The weather was a pea-souper and rain was lashing against his cockpit as he was vectored on to those unidentified A/C. But even that autographed, cockpit mounted photo of Betty Hutton up a ladder didn't divert him from his task!

A few weeks later I remember escorting him to Abbeville for the presentation of the Iron Cross First Class by none other that Reichsmarschall Georing himself. Quite a unique occasion....what!!! salute

Y'all ,

A quote from Roger:

"Bottoms Up, Dux." cheers

In present text conversation. ..

Ok, decided to call after that.
Not because he might have been indulging, but hoped he had read the forum.
Which meant he had gotten to go home for a bit!

Roger got to go home, but just for a while. Therapy place SOPs, Med rules, etc. which I remember for my experience with care places, stopped a longer visit at home.

Between the ride home, family, especially the grand-kids, the cat's happiness to see him. (If you been around cats, you know how unusual that can be...), there was little time to get on line and say Hello to all here.
But he did ask me to convey his good wishes to all.

He says he is getting stronger, had no problem climbing the stairs, and sends his wishes to all for a Happy New Year!
Also, if possible, he will get on line and say Hi.

I'm tickled pink at his progress, and at his holding the line.

It helps make Christmas. thumbsup

Merry Christmas to you too, O.G. Hope you are getting some good flying in.
