God bless him. Another few years and they will all be gone.
My old friend Doug ( RN retired ) is almost 95 and is just now staring to get a bit feeble. He served in the RN from 1939 to 1946 and in every region that the RN operated in. He did not get home to his family in Nfld once during that time. One of my wife's clients passed away last Wednesday he was 93, we were at his funeral this morning. He had given his goodbyes to my wife on the 29th June, he said he would not be here when we got back from Scotland on the 6th July, he passed away a few hours before we landed. He had served as a medic in the Belgian Army and fought in Belgium and France during WW2 he was called up at 17 when war broke out, there were a few of his comrades there today, none of them were in their first flush of youth.

A real survivor flying throughout the conflict; he flew Typhoons against well defended V1 sites after the Invasion. Many were Tiffie pilots were lost on these dangerous missions. Just flying the Tiffie was dangerous enough, due to tail assembly weaknesses and the ingress of carbon monoxide into the cockpit. Incidentally, some of his colleagues in 193 Sqdrn were credited with the attack on Rommel in his staff car.

He beat the odds for sure. S! He was in command on 163 Sqd from May'44 to Aug'44 flying out of Funtington. On D-Day he claimed a Fw190 just south of Caen while flying Typhoon DN432, FJ*F. BD, it was 2 Spitfires of RCAF 412 Sqd that attacked and injured Rommel, tho RAAF 453 Sqd and RAF 602 Sqd also make the claim. http://www.tangmere-museum.org.uk/articles/who-shot-rommelAs for the Typhoon, several Tiffies lost their tails early in its career and this became a WW2 myth. Besides combat losses, the biggest number of losses was because of engine problems of one kind or another.
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Interesting Krazi; thanks for clarifications!
I got my reference to the attack on Rommel from "Typhoon Attack" by Norman Franks "Although one of his officers thought the aircraft were Spitfires, history records it as Typhoons of 193 Squadron, led by Wing Commander Johnny Baldwin." One of many claims I believe, even the USAAF claimed it was one of their Jugs!
