I guess they'll hire anyone these days to write articles...

Even tools.

Because hey! That's a F-22 over there! And the pilot is looking at us funny. But, umm, I notice he has no missiles on his wings so everything's okay and we can continue to invade airspace because he isn't armed!

O_O

Someone should write this clown a letter and politely explain to him that the U.S. practices the advanced "Maverick" protocol, which dissuades the need to show off missiles through advanced foreign relations techniques that have been proven "top effective." Very nice.

He might even believe us.

This may sound like a dumb question or it may have been asked before and answered before but to this day after all these years, I still ask:

that upside down scene in Top Gun, is that really possible?

I would think not, you risk the horizontal stabilizer on one plane touching the horizontal stabilizer on the other plane and both planes will collide and crash.

F-22 pilot:
"You are in American airspace. Turn back or I will shoot you down."

Russian pilot:
"Foolish American. By flying next to me to warn me you have given up your most effective weapon, stealth."

2nd (unseen) F-22 pilot:
"I haven't."

Russian pilot:
"..................I'm sorry, I thought that was Moscow down there. I shouldn't have taken that left turn at Albequerque. Da svidaniya."

The vertical stabilizers would most likely hit the top of the opposing aircraft at that distance. The F-14 is longer, so it's possible that its vertical stabilizers could be extending down past the end of the T-38 when the canopies are aligned, but then the vertical stabilizer of the T-38 would be hitting the F-14.

Look at how far above the canopy the F-14's vertical stab sticks up:

The shot was complete bs. You put any airplane on its back and stay horizontal like that and you'll lose altitude so fast the needle won't be able to keep up. To maintain level flight that F-14's assend would be what banged into the other plane, not just the stabilizer.

That said, the Tomcat has a split tail and the T-28 is a single. So all else being equal, they wouldn't touch.

**edit**
And the US Military has banned the Maverick Maneuver. The female pilots have deemed the accompanying hand gesture sexist.

You can fly any plane upside down at level altitude providing you have enough thrust to compensate for the lack of airlift. Its not recommended as fuel/oil starvation will occur due to the design of the fuel/oil tanks.

Like this scene in that Denzel Washington's airline disaster film:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=edaHyeIxzcI

According to Popular Mechanics, it is doable.

Going back to the SU-57 for a moment, it recently received its NATO code name of "Felon."

You do know that the Boeing 707 prototype did a roll on its first exhibition flight.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I didn't know that.

WIKI says 1954?

I wasn't around for another 20 years.

I italicized the critical part of my post in the quote, since you apparently missed it the first time. You have to point your nose at the sky if you're inverted, otherwise the lift vector is toward the Earth and both gravity and your aircraft's lift will be working to bring you down.
