Why are there no comedians of their caliber today? I grew up watching the Dean Martin comedy roasts. Red Buttons, Foster Brooks, Rich Little, Johnathan Winters, Nipsey Russel, Soupy Sales, Buddy Hackett, Phil Silvers. Those guys would have you in stitches and never use foul language to do it. True, sometimes the innuendo was there, but it was comedy you could have taken your grandmother to see.

Wow, does this mean I'm getting old?

Don’t forget Don Rickles and Redd Foxx!

One of my biggest regrets is that I was too young to appreciate the musical talent on Hee Haw when my father watched it on Saturday nights, and another is that I was too young to appreciate the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts.

Back in the early 1970's, I guess, Foster Brooks was appearing on the Tonight Show when Carson was still the host. He was doing his stand-up routine for the audience and started discussing the space program.

He happened to mention the powdered orange drink Tang which was carried on some of the space missions. Tang even used this as part of their advertising at the time. He then mentioned that Tang had a new flavor coming out. It was to be prune flavored.

At that point, he observed in his very funny fake inebriated fashion that: "Everybody likes a little Prune Tang in the morning!" This was in the days when broadcast TV was pretty well censored and we couldn't believe that joke made it past the censors. Carson literally fell out of his chair from laughing so hard as we probably did at home. It was so funny at the time that it still sticks in my mind when the name Foster Brooks comes up.

Cheers

I grew up with these, and I agree, TV (while sesnsored) was alot more healthy then what kids/us have today.

And there was moral...

A bit more flashback smile2

What's interesting is how this can be applied to so many other things:

Why are there no sci-fi writers today of the same caliber as Asimov, Clarke and Herbert?
Why are there no operas being written today of the same caliber as Wagner's "Ring" or La Traviata?

I think part of this phenomenon has to do with being older. For example, I know there are still comedians out there who do stand up and are relatively well known but it's not nearly on the same level as the comedians we knew about in the 70's and 80's.

I think it boils down to "work". Everything is alot easier now. Sound engineers of the 60-70-80´s were "real" that really knew there thing. Now days a kid sparks Cubase/Reason/Ableton up, starts messing around with some pluggins, pumps up compression, starts a damm war with it and call them selfs "producers", which in the end make billions because the Industry has massly influenced there hearing habbits! In other words we have a bunch of un-educated viewers/listeners/readers thanks to the money hungry industry.

How many Fred Astaire´s do we have now? That´s talent!

Not saying that it´s all lost but heck, it´s darn broken!

Just my two cents.

Another two favorites from back then are "The Andy Griffith Show" and "The Twilight Zone."

Andy Griffith was awesome in his own right and everyone here should know this. The classic Twilight Zone, however, had talented writers on every episode giving us fresh plots with interesting twists.

BUT

Red2112, if you are looking for a modern show that is close to similar quality, look no further than Tim Allen's "Last Man Standing." One of the best shows I have seen on television in years, and precisely what you are looking for. I'm halfway through, but I hear the last season replaces one of the best actresses on the show, so if you watch, watch the earlier seasons first.

It is indeed a great show but the writers also had the advantage that the science fiction genre back then was very fresh and so it was much easier to come up with plots that were really creative and original. The Twilight Zone also had the advantage of being a true trailblazing scifi show because how many other scifi shows were on American TV before it premiered in 1959? I can't think of a single one.

I have to say Jonathan Winters is one of my favs!

Nobody has made me laugh as much as all of these above, maybe it has to do with your childhood memories, or there simply good.

I think it's a combination of both but comedy is also something that changes over time. Most of these classic comedians from the 60's 70's would be considered politically incorrect today.

It was originally on ABC but maybe you can get the back episodes on Netflix.

That reminds me of something Brandon Sanderson has said:

“All stories told have been told before. We tell them to ourselves, as did all men who ever were. And all men who ever will be. The only things new are the names.”

He's right. That's why strong characters and interesting plot twists are so crucial.

With the technology changing and society's values changing, the content changing is inevitable.

In the early days of movies and television, it was easier to market less complex, (and more wholesome) content as the medium was still relatively young/fresh, and there were fewer outlets to compete against. Your local movie theatre and 3 channels of television is a much narrower field of competition than we have today.

People could enjoy simpler stories with the good guys wearing white hats and the bad guys wearing black hats early on beause it was still new... eventually, that was too simplistic / boring.

Without getting into PWEC territory, combine the changing output from the universities (with the trickle down to the entertainment and journalism complexes) with the expanding number of media outlets, and competition for eyeball$ was bound to drive content to new directions / extremes.

There is plenty of clean comedy out there (check out Dry Bar Comedy for plenty of stand-up comedy without the cussing), but it is now just a smaller slice of a much larger pie.

I see more as overall "greed" in every way and form. So much to choose, but then nobody really wins. Greed ends up killing it´s self.

Thanks Blastman, we have Netflix, I´ll check it out...

Still remember them and the laughs they elicited from me well. cool
The Dolphins on Monday night football and the Dean Martin roasts were the only shows I could stay up late to watch during the school year. IIRC the roasts were shown on Friday nights quite often making staying up late on those nights less problematic.
