A 65-year-old American man who rigged his home with a booby trap to keep out intruders has been killed by the device.

Ronald Cyr called police in the town of Van Buren in the state of Maine to say he had been shot.

Police found a door had been designed to fire a handgun should anyone attempt to enter. Mr Cyr was taken to hospital but died of his injuries.

It is not uncommon for home-owners to install such traps - but it is illegal.

Police in Van Buren, which borders the Canadian province of New Brunswick, said they responded to a 911 call in the early evening of Thanksgiving, last Thursday, from a man who said he had been shot.

"Following an extensive investigation that lasted into the early morning... it was determined that Mr Cyr had been shot as the result of the unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices," the police department said in a Facebook post.

You can shoot an intruder who breaks into your property while you are at home to protect yourself, your family and your home but if you set up booby traps to protect the same property while you are away from home, then you are breaking the law.

it's not legal in all 50 U.S. States to have booby traps in your own home to protect it from burglars and criminals while you are not home.

I wonder why that is?

You can shoot if there is reasonable fear for your life or somebody else’s life. Now tell me who’s life (except for the perp) is in danger to justify the use of deadly force ?

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

Darwin at work.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

I can think of reasons why booby-trapping your house with lethal weaponry is illegal, no surprise why that is against the law. Must have been a fun time for the investigators, I wonder what procedures they have for such cases, if they exist.

But, how many other booby traps did he have in the house? Must have been fun, NOT, going thru the house by the cops.

Well, there was a death in the house, I'd suppose that investigators needed to look through the rest of the house at the very least, and it certainly can't be left in a rigged condition forever smile. Must have been a short-straw feeling to have to search that one.

Well say there is a fire or some emergency where the police, Firemen or paramedics need to go into the building and trigger a booby trap.. they should be illegal for that reason alone.

I agree with Nephilim. A booby trap can't clearly identify a target as a threat. As evidenced by the article at the heart of this thread.

SALUTE TO ALL!

Maybe for the reason this man died...the booby trap would injure or kill anybody falling in, I mean people who have good reasons to get in the house without being burglars : firemen or police officers if there is a probleme in the house, neighbors or kids trying to help and first of all...the owner...
