Driving about 40-45 on a 55mph road because there are always moose in it at night, going around a shallow right hand curve and all of a sudden I’m spinning and have absolutely no steering or braking. I spun about 270 degrees, hit the snowbank on the shoulder, started going over while continuing to spin, and ended up maybe 30 degrees from being upside down (driver’s door upward) and maybe 30-45 degrees from my original direction of travel. I shut the engine off immediately, and checked that the cat I was bringing back from the vet was OK, then got myself unbuckled. That was a little difficult, having to push myself off the roof to take weight off the buckle. Found my gloves (it was around 15F with strong winds), dug the flashlight out of the glove compartment (well, out of the dash where it fell when the glove compartment became upside down), and made sure the driver’s window would roll down so I could get out. Started looking for my phone that had been sitting on the dash, but then I saw a car had pulled up and stopped so I rolled down the window and shined my light at them. Got the cat carrier and gave it to the lady who’d stopped and waded through 3-4 feet of snow, got myself out, and went to sit in her car. She was on the phone with 911, we both gave some info and were told the sheriff’s deputy was coming. I went to look for my phone and found it, then started texting a few friends to let them know.

When the deputy got there I waited for the ambulance in his truck, the lady went home after I texted her my number with a promise to let her know when Biscuit and I made it home safely, and texted a few friends to let them know. I got checked out by paramedics when they got there, BP was 190/120 but did go down enough to make them happy and let me go. It’s normally around 120/80. Back in the deputy’s truck, my friends showed up and brought me home. But we went back in his work truck to get the expensive-ass Royal Canin food I’d left in the Jeep. Plus, I wanted to get pics. It was already on the ramp truck, though, so I couldn’t get any of it upside down.

The road was ice maybe 1/4” thick, mainly because of the pond/lake nearby. It was rough-surfaced ice, like ice pebbles. Crazy slippery, vehicles would drive by while I was in the deputy’s truck and most of them gave a little slide when they picked up a little speed after passing us. It looks like I started spinning almost immediately upon hitting the ice, I hadn’t felt even a hint of sliding before.

The damage is basically cosmetic - broken passenger side window in the hardtop and a crumpled passenger front fender. That’ll pull out, and I was going to replace them next spring anyway. The passenger side door opened and closed just fine when we got the cat food, so the windshield frame and “sport bar” (it sure seems like it acted like a roll bar to me!) are both intact. I’ll obviously check it out completely when I get it home, but I’d be surprised if there was anything major that I didn’t see tonight.

I love Jeeps!

Thanks everyone, other than immediately after coming to a rest I wasn’t concerned at all with the Jeep.

Some things I learned:

1) I have a RAM mount for the phone on the dash, if I’d had the phone secured in it I wouldn’t have had to look for it. It was really fortuitous that people came by so soon, I hadn’t seen another vehicle in 30-40 miles of driving and being able to dial 911 myself could have made a big difference.

2) Carrying a knife and flashlight on my person is a good idea, if I’d broken or otherwise injured an arm no way was I getting the seatbelt unbuckled. Same with having a flashlight right at hand, in heavy blowing or falling snow my flashers might not have been visible given the attitude of the Jeep. The 1000 lumen Nitecore in my toolbox at work would have, especially on a strobe setting.

3) If I hadn’t been able to roll down the driver's door window for some reason, an automatic center punch secured somewhere inside would have allowed me to break glass to get out. Taped or Velcroed to the shifter, maybe. A little hammer-style glass breaking tool might need to be swung harder than available room or physical injury allowed.

4) I knew this already, but seatbelts save lives! I would NOT have wanted to be tumbling around in there.

Glad you made it through no worse than that. Have had a few run-ins with ice myself and, yeah, no warning whatsoever. Kinda like the 'earthquake' of driving conditions. Especially at night. One of the nice things about being retired is no longer feeling any pressure to drive in even semi-unsafe conditions.

SALUTE TO ALL!

Where the accident happened.

The snowbank and 2’ or so of snow in the ditch really cushioned things, I think. If only I’d hit the guardrail a couple hundred yards farther down the road! Follow US201 in either direction to see how remote it is. To the south the first town you come to is West Forks, pop. 30. Another 10-12 miles north from the accident site is Jackman, where I live. From there it’s maybe 15 miles to the Canadian border.

ETA: A few miles north you come to Hardscrabble Rd, aka Spencer Rd. During WW2 there was a German POW camp about 12 miles in, at Spencer Lake. Now there’s nothing left of it, but some school kids did put a memorial there some time back. I picked up a book about it a while ago but haven’t read it yet.

Glad you and Biscuit are ok. thumbsup

Eventually I'll have to replace my 2008 Honda Element (200k miles, only car) and I'm going to look at Jeeps (don't want carpeting if possible, easier to clean with dogs).

On the 'flip' side (sorry) Jeeps are a bit prone to losing control due to the short wheel base. By the time you feel the back end coming around, it's likely too late.

Glad you're okay. It could have been a lot worse. Good luck on the Jeep repairs.

Yep, just a breath of pressure on the brakes or a tiny bit of steer input when on ice and you’re riding the regurgitron like the lady on the Stokes litter. It’s already happened a few times on logging roads, but I stayed on the wheels and just drove out of the ditch in 4 low.

Lucky escape mate! About that knife, good idea, a mate of mine was strangled by his seatbelt in the late '90's in a Landcruiser. Similar circumstances except mud, not ice. Car flipped, he was knocked out and my other mate couldn't pop the belt due to the weight and other complications in the cab restricting him. Poor bugger beat himself up for ages over it, tackle boxes with the knives were unreachable.

If you are really worried about another accident, you might want to get one of these:

I’m not worried about it, but I am planning on getting 1 or 2 of those. Probably AAA, too, the closest wrecker available was from a town about 60 miles away and brought it to their yard. I won’t be able to get it until Friday at the earliest, so add a week of storage fees to the tow call fee.

I second that notion. Been doing exactly that for many years - it's amazing how handy and compact they can be now.

An old saying about a topic I won't get into - what's the best "tool"? The one you have on you...

It took almost 2 weeks of calling 2 or 3 times a day for the towing company to tell me how much it would cost to get my Jeep, but last Friday I finally got a number. They deducted all the daily storage fees because I’d been trying to come get it all along, so the tow call, recovery charge (for having to right it and winch it to the road), and 60 miles back to their shop was $615. The guy at the tow company told me it wasn’t drivable so a friend borrowed a trailer and we went to get it yesterday afternoon.

It wouldn’t crank or do anything electrical, so I checked the battery for obvious damage or loose connections. There was none, so I’m assuming I left a light or something on and at some time in the past 3 weeks the battery died. It didn’t explode when we hooked up a jumper pack so it’s most likely not damaged. I let it run for a bit to melt the ice on the windshield and drove it onto the trailer. The reason it “wasn’t drivable” is because the passenger side front fender was touching the tire. We lifted it off and could have driven it home. I didn’t have the clothing for that cold drive, though, and wanted to give it a good going over and drive it around town at home first. So we tied down the rear and I was going to use my winch to secure the front. The instant I powered the winch the engine died, so the battery wasn’t taking a charge (the alternator doesn’t generate near enough current to run a winch, it comes from the battery and the alternator recharges it over time), so we ratchet-strapped the front down, too, and hit the road.

Here are the pics I took of it this morning.

[Linked Image]

Damage to the fiberglass hardtop at the windshield frame.

[Linked Image]

I think my slide-in tow shackle for the receiver hitch did this. It’s not in the Jeep, maybe I can go find it in the spring LOL

[Linked Image]

Slight damage to the hardtop by the back glass hinge.

[Linked Image]

The back glass hinge itself is broken. They’re made of aluminum and always corrode due to galvanic action with the steel pin, so it could have just come apart at any time. I’ll be replacing them with black stainless steel.

[Linked Image]

A new passenger side mirror and side hardtop glass are the only other parts I need to buy. Come springtime I’ll replace both fenders and the windshield frame, due to preexisting rust on them. A little fiberglass work and you won’t be able to tell!

Disappointed you don't have the sticker across your windshield though that says "If you can read this, roll me upright" LMAO
