I'd love to see an 8-10 part mini series following select British fighter pilots from just before WWII until the end of the war, primarily focused on Robert Stanford Tuck, Douglas Bader and Johnny Johnson. Secondarily also feature "Sailor" Malan and Peter Townsend.

Bader of course has had a movie about his life but I know of no movie based on Tuck and his story is in some ways more fascinating than Baders. Time in the merchant marine, almost kicked out of the RAF, shooting at a German aircraft that jettisoned its bombs which then killed his brother-in-law, numerous incidents of incredible luck, shot down, captured, escaped to Russian lines then forced into ground combat with the Russians, escaped from the Russians...

Probably will never happen, but I can dream.

You would think some UK studio would have already made something similar to that.

Can any of our U.K. SimHQ members shed some light? smile

And yes I would definitely watch what you described F4U.

The most incredible story in Tucks biography was when he was making his way through Poland trying to get to the British embassy in Russia. He was dressed in rags and had a full beard. A guy started following him around the streets, Tuck thought he must be secret police etc. and he tried to lose him. He could not. Finally the guy comes up to him and in a British accent says " You're Bob Tuck aren't you"? Incredibly this guy had been captured at Dunkirk, escaped and made his way to Poland. While in France he had served with Tucks brother and had only ever seen Tucks picture. Tuck said that his own mother would not have recognized him but this guy did, about a thousand miles from Britain.

I think I have seen the Douglas Bader movie.

It was in Black and White and had a famous British actor in it as Bader.

Whatever happened to the mini-series about the U.S.A.A.F. 8th Air Force that was going to be the third part of the World War 2 trilogy with Band of Brothers and The Pacific?

It was Reach for the Sky. I saw it recently. Bader was played by Kenneth More.

It's amazing how well these old movies stand up to their modern equivalents.

Yes, that's the one.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049665/

Kenneth More is famous.

He was also in Battle of Britain.

Which by the way, Ridley Scott is producing and directing a remake of Battle of Britain.

Better be great and not be like Pearl Harbor and Midway.

That's the first I've heard of a BoB re-make. I didn't find much about it,I hope it's not another 'Dambusters'.

I agree having read his autobiography 'Fly for Your Life' which would make a great film or drama series.

The British TV series of the Derek Robinson book 'Piece of Cake' comes to mind. which combined many of the tales, personality and particularly dark & dry humour of characters such as Tuck, Lacey & Kingcome.

I just recently re-read Bader, Tuck and Townsends books which is what gave me the idea.

Apple TV+ recently purchased it:

Not sure how well this bodes for the future of the series.... really wish HBO would've brought it to fruition.

To the topic at hand, YES, I'd love to see a miniseries based on these aces!!!!
