Nicolas Cage to play Nicolas Cage in a movie about...Nicolas Cage

The main character, Nicolas Cage, is at his wit’s end trying to land a role in the latest Tarantino flick, while attempting to patch things up with his teenage daughter and overcome mountains of debt.

The fictional Cage is constantly having internal conversations with a ’90s movie star version of himself, who ridicules his flailing film career.

Things start to turn up when he meets a billionaire from Mexico, who’s a fan of his stuff and has some projects he wants to talk to Cage about. But, in a “National Treasure”-like twist, the CIA informs Cage that the billionaire is a drug kingpin, and they’d like Cage’s help trying to bust him.

I don't understand why he still gets hired. He and a handful of other actors: any of the Baldwin brothers, Steven Seagal, Dolph Lundgren, Jean Claude Van Damme.

They make mostly low budget movies and B movies and direct to video stuff most folks never heard of.

Also who is financing the millions of $ it takes to get those movies made.

Bruce Willis is another one.

Between a Die Hard film every now and then and one theatrical actioner, he makes bunch of direct to video B- movies.

I'm hearing ya lol. Same as Gerard Butler who has been popping up in a ton of trashy movies since 300.

Sean Connery's career was in steep decline until he played Richard Lionheart in one of the Robin Hood movies. All of a sudden the grey-haired, bearded Connery was hip again. Michael Keaton was ridiculed for his old Batman role; then he shows in Birdman that he can still act, and makes a formidable "Vulture" in one of the Spiderman films.

An actor's career has ups and downs. If youi peak in your early years it's difficult to maintain or regain such a standing. Nevertheless, if you're about to rent a film and the choice is between "a B-movie you're mildly interested in" and "a B-movie you're mildly interested in featuring an actor that you know and about whom you have fond memories", it's more likely that, on average, people'll pick the B-movie with a star in it. IOW, their names still have a market value that can occasionally lift a film project's chance above the no-go threshold, or its those actors themselves that pitch these films with producers they know.

I don't know much about the CIA, but would they be the ones to contact Cage about a drug kingpin or would it be the DEA?

The issue is not p*ssy. The issue is monkey.

If past performance is indicative, the CIA would probably try to bust the drug kingpin only because they want to install an even worse criminal to finance black operations with drug sales while the DEA has no clue about the CIA meddling.

Peak Nick Cage was Jan 7, 1964 and all down hill ever since.

It's rough aging in Hollywood, not just for women.
Connery had a streak of luck with Highlander and the Untouchables reminding people about him, leading to bigger roles in Indiana Jones and Hunt for Red October.

Cage used to be a good actor, but then Con Air and Face Off just ruined everything. I still like Wild at Heart.

...or Arizona Junior; basically, most stuff before 1997. I think he was good the Lord of War and a few films after '97. Bashing Cage has become a bit of a self-supporting meme I think. Not entirely without reason, but not entirely fair to the man either.

A huge factor to consider with Cage is that he racked up an IRS debt which was several million dollars and the only way to pay that off relatively quickly and to stay out of Federal prison (unlike Wesley Snipes) was to take whatever acting roles were offered to him. This is exactly why you see a laundry list of really crappy B movies in his IMDB credits for the past 10 years or so.

Panzer hit the nail on the head. Cage mismanaged his wealth and spent all of his money on ludicrous crap that he wanted--much like Michael Jackson. He wasted so much money for stuff with no real inherent value or conversely overpaid for those things with value, that he had nothing left to pay the government and had to start taking every part that came his way.

Read and be amazed:

Seinfeld and Jay Leno also own a lot of cars they paid total of millions for and they are not broke.

We all want a nice place to live (or two) and a couple of nice cars.

He just bought too much.

What are you going to do with 15 houses and an island and a haunted house?

They both spent well within their means and my educated guess is that they spaced out those purchases more while Cage did much more of an impulsive shopping spree.

Bingo.
Anyone of any economic level can blow it.

The average lifespan of an inheritance or lottery winnings is about three years, from my experience, no matter the size.

It is amazing how people can blow money.

The problems that especially Hollywood celebrities (even more so than pop stars) face is that the whole system allows people to reach super celebrity status within a really short time, and that it is designed to surround such stars with yes-men entourages that put absolutely no barrier around therse stars as far as responsible behavior is concerned; instead, they are usually reinforcing/exploiting irresponsible behavior. This makes it very hard for anyone thrown into this system with little preparation to handle the whole situation well. Arguably Cage, as a member of the Coppola clan, ought to have been better prepared than most for all this, but I just don't know how well his family actually takes care of their members, or if Cage simply is the worst in the family about impulse control; as far as Hollywood standards go, he seems to fit right in. We all can immediately come up with a laundry list of people who faired worse (Charlie Sheen, Mel Gibson, Carrie Fisher, Justin Bieber, ...), people who faired worse but eventually got their act together (Rober Downey Jr., at least on the face of it), or people who for a very long time managed to stay away from the great destructive star machinery (Harrison Ford).

One sort of recent Cage film I actually liked was "Season of the Witch". I've only seen it once but I remember really enjoying it and it had a quality story, characters and special effects. There was another called Outcast which was not very good. Season of the Witch was pretty darn decent and it has Ron Perlman and they both do a good job interacting with each other. I also though Dying of the Light wasn't too bad for sort of a budgety CIA movie. Unfortunately, many if not much of the time they are not done well but I liked seeing him in a faith based movie like Left Behind.

The script as described by Ajay just sounds ridiculous and uninteresting.
