A(nother) California wildfire burned on the north side of the Hollywood Hills yesterday. Not only was the Warner lot threatened but it was also very near Universal Studios and Forest Lawn Cemetery and across the concrete ditch known as the L.A. River from both the NBC and Disney Studios. Scott Eastwood said when word of the evacuation reached the Malpaso Productions offices located on the Warner lot his father said, "No, we're good. There's work to be done." Fortunately firefighters were able to prevent the blaze doing any damage to the lot.

Taking nothing away from the firefighters, there have been unconfirmed reports of a squinty-eyed elderly man standing on a roof glaring at the inferno saying, "Do you feel lucky?", at which point the fire turned away.

Why are there so many wildfire in California? Is it because they don't get enough rain? Arizona and New Mexico also don't get enough rain but they don't get that many wildfire in such large scale each year.

Why have the wildfires been so bad this year? Much lower rainfall and thus much drier foliage?

Arizona and New Mexico are largely a lot more barren than California, and where they have the fuel for fires it's at much higher altitudes, colder.

They also have nowhere near the human population, and nowhere near as much business, infrastructure, etc - a lot of California fires aren't actually wildfires...

Then there's the fact that most California forests are owned and managed by the FEDERAL government, but we won't go into that...

Interesting.

The forests of California are plentiful, diverse and managed for many different objectives. A recently published book chapter, "Forestry" in the 2016 Ecosystems of California book, provides a detailed overview of the history and future directions of California's forests. Of the approximately 33 million acres of forest in California, federal agencies (including the USDA Forest Service and USDI Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service) own and manage 19 million acres (57%). State and local agencies including CalFire, local open space, park and water districts and land trusts own another 3%. 40% of California's forestland is owned by families, Native American tribes, or companies. Industrial timber companies own 5 million acres (14%). 9 million acres are owned by individuals with nearly 90% of these owners having less than 50 acres of forest land.

Winds. It got insanely windy.

We just had rain enough last winter to bust an 11 year drought.

California, for the most part, is nowhere near as "dry" as during the past decade.

During one of the power blackouts (which luckily I wasn't subjected to) I aborted a motorcycle ride for the first time in my life because of winds.

In the middle of Sacramento County.

And I've owned 8 motorcycles, been riding since 1987...
