been thinking about this for a few days now.. there are movies that for some reason didn't do so well.... but had brilliant music scores. I can think of 3 right off... (posted below) but I'm always on the look out for more music for my playlists... anyone got anymore to add?
The Rocketeer
The Time Machine (2002)

Absolutely "Dune" from 1984. It was a box office flop but the score by Toto is absolutely brilliant in my opinion.
Also "Tron" from 1982. It also lost money at the box office but the score by Wendy Carlos has now become legendary.

This is the main title song written and sung by Mary Fahl from Ted Turner's movie of "Gods and Generals"--based on the second book in the Michael and Jeff Shaara civil war trilogy. The first movie was "Gettysburg" based on Michael's book titled "The Killer Angels". A third movie based on the "Last Full Measure" by son Jeff will probably never be made. Still, a haunting and beautiful song.
At one time the movie "Cutthroat Island" was rated as the largest financial flop in history. It usually still makes the top ten lists. I saw it at the theater with my 2nd wife and another couple during the Christmas holidays in 1995 or 96 after it came out and the theater was almost empty. I like anything about pirates and enjoyed it, but it was overlong and Geena Davis was totally miscast in the lead pirate role. Still, the soundtrack by John Debney was spectacular.

The Rocketeer. First time I ever saw Jennifer Connally. Wow!!

I like a lot of the movies listed here like Rocketeer, Time Machine and 1492 Conquest of Paradise. Saw 1492 when it came out and that's one of those movies as a kid that made an impression. Beautiful, dramatic and visceral. Michael Wincott was great as that loathsome character he played. His disgusting character but fierce acting always stuck with me especially that scene where he's being chased to be brought to justice for sedition and he basically says something like, "here we are gods" and then jumps off the cliff.
Forward Observer, thanks for posting that song. That song and movie came out around the time my Uncle died leaving a big wound in the family and that song was beautiful but difficult to listen to at times.
I'm not an expert on what movies did or didn't do well but a movie I really love and who's score is equally grande is The Straight Story with Richards Farnsworth.
One of my favorite movies is The Mission. Not sure if it was popular or not but its also got a very special Ennio Morricone score.

That is a great soundtrack! And this is my favourite rendition of Gabriel’s Oboe. Just listen to this, it is more beautiful than I can put into words:
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Ennio Morricone has long been my favourite composer.
Various reasons why this didn't do well at the box office. For those of you who like Jennifer Connelly, be aware she is VERY young in this movie still very beautiful though.

Great song and a fantastic film. It's a shame that the film was a box office flop but at the same time I was not surprised. As far as I'm concerned, Stephen Lang IS Stonewall Jackson reincarnated.

At least La Guerre du Feu (English title: Quest for Fire) inspired a track by Iron Maiden, Though managing to gain an Oscar the film did not do to well at the box office.

In my opinion the Conan films are prime examples where the music far outshined the actual movies. Poledouris really nailed it with his brilliant score.
A great sampling here,

I'm not sure of its critical reception, I know a lot of folks really enjoy the film as I do, but I have always love the soundtrack to Jeremiah Johnson.
