For those of you who have decided to learn how to invest and make your money work for you I'm saying this bull market will keep on rolling more. Bull markets don't simply stop and become bear markets - there are plenty of signs as that process progresses.

All the best in your investments

Haggart, your post doesn’t seem to square with what you were saying and doing back then.

Airdrop said he lost 60K on Calgene ....not me .... was never invested in Calgene. Of course anyone can lose money in stocks even the best and/or wealthiest investors have but how much cash you're willing to lose or gain depends on how much you put down. That's also part of the learning curve .... to make good investment choices so that you limit your exposure in any single stock to appropriate %'s of your total portfolio in case of loss and use other tools such as STOPs to limit downside. You learn to select stronger stocks with better fundamental metrics also.

Many of these things are not taught at high schools or colleges but anyone can pick up a beginning book and start learning and of course they'll find a wealth of help from online sites.

If someone simply doesn't wish to learn much about investing they can certainly turn it over to a professional who takes care of their investments but of course there is almost always a cost to that.

The cost of doing nothing more than keeping a huge pile of cash at the bank has an even steeper cost - the cost of not having put that cash to work. I've seen co-workers do just that ....kept all their money in cash funds and they have half of what they should have had at retirement.

Those posts were from Oct 2017 ..... I've been very busy learning more for the past several years and creating a large dividend portfolio. No one can be correct all the time about the markets especially given the fact that corrections happen an avg of twice per year and recessions and crashes can happen quickly. But we're also dealing with probabilities and the likelihood of this bull market continuing is still strong.

You said “ I don't know if this market will hit a DOW of 24,000 before a correction but I decided to sell a lot into cash today before the market close.”

and “ well if it does make it to 24,0000 or S&P 2,600+ .....when the correction does come I'll pounce on it near the bottom - that's the game plan anyway biggrin “

Neither of which support staying fully invested. Actually the opposite.

It’s not a big deal, but as you say you are just learning and I don’t want it taken that you have solid professional investing guidance for them to apply.

For me "a lot into cash" means 30% in cash and 70% in stocks/bonds ..... i was 100% in cash in my early 20s but that was over 40 years ago. Since i started investing many decades ago most of my savings have always resided in stocks. No, I'm not an investment professional or financial consultant but have helped plenty of people simply by showing them that being invested in the markets under the guidance of a professional (or themselves if they feel someday they've learned enough) is far better than piling up cash in a checking or bank savings account. Long ago i was surprised by how many people do just that.

Two years away from retirement now I've built a growth/income portfolio to help me generate cash. Last year i generated $17,000 in free money. Why do i call it free money ? Because that's exactly what it is ..... all $17,000 are from company dividends ...... cash given away by companies as a "thank you for being an investor with our company"

You are absolutely right about getting your money working for you. Having a long term investment plan is a must.

$17,000 from dividends ? That means a very large amount in solely dividend paying stocks.

Yes sir, and plenty of those companies are also growing so your investment is too and not just from reinvested dividends (which is a form of compounding). Even an investment in the metal copper through an ETF can pay dividends ....COPX .... div yield 3.72%
