I was watching a documentary about the Pacific war and the host mentioned that the flag raising on Mount Suribachi was considered the greatest picture of the Pacific campaign'

Is there a counterpart for the European campaign or one that would be considered the best of the whole war?

It may be subjective I suppose but you guys must have some contenders for that top spot.

Appreciate any replies.

Ominous, Panzer, but iconic nonetheless.

+1

I’m the furthest thing possible from a Communist but there’s no denying the iconic status of that photo.

Photos of London during the Blitz and Pearl Harbor Dec 7 1941.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Great pics guys. F4UDash4's pic reminds me of that video clip you see quite often on some documentary's of soldiers wading ashore towards the ruined buildings in the foreground, harrowing stuff.

Another video clip I see quite often is a soldier carrying someone on his back as he stumbles through the trenches, that would make a good picture.

So many great pictures that you could pick from. Is there a general consensus as to what is considered the greatest pic of WW2?

Cheers guys.

I don't know about the best shot, but the one I posted was taken in the most harrowing circumstances, where the guy with the pistol was killed soon after and the camera destroyed by enemy fire.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
