"...old but updated M-16"? What I could see of it looked like the GAU-5 I carried in the 1970's.

I don’t remember the USAF’s guns having forward assists. That’s an M16A1 (upper receiver, anyway) with collapsible stock retrofitted. The carry handle looks like it’s been squeezed just ahead of the rear sight.

I don’t remember the USAF’s guns having forward assists. Mine did. Both M16A1 in TACP (the precursor to JTAC) and GAU in CCT. Can't speak to the cops or the rest of the Air Force, although I believe that PJ's carried the GAU so if ours did theirs undoubtedly would have, also.
SALUTE TO ALL!

All the M16A1’s had forward assists.

I noticed those tactical full pouty lips right away that is the first thing I noticed as well the Israelis received a huge quantity of M-16A1 for free in the 80s (which had the unfortunate side effect of sidelining the Galil) and instead of letting them rust away, recently started to give them a big overhaul. And it looks like more modern M4s are sidling the Tavor in the IDF. IWI is now building an entirely new rifle and their own M4 variant, probably for Israeli special forces in mind. The newer Galil ACE is doing well in South America because it was a joint Colombian project, so I assume local politics and trade agreements sell that rifle more than anything.
