Okay. I wasn’t totally in the throes of Alzheimer’s then. Did search for that file name on my entire hard disk and “No match.”
Searched that folder too.
Does it get deleted when you exit the game?
I’ll try pausing a campaign flight and looking then.

This file gets deleted if you fly Quick Combat mission after.

I didn’t but I switched pilot careers so that apparently also deletes it.
Just flew a campaign mission and exited and it’s there.
Thanks!

Yes, good point, you are right - switching pilot (carrier) also deletes last mission file.

As a bit of a follow-up the latest mission that was causing a FPS slow down (though not quite bad as some) had 837 aircraft in play. Used ME to get that info.
Actually going to restart this career and find out, when my FPS is great in 1918, how many aircraft are up.

EDIT: Campaign restart back to 1 March 1918. FPS better but not as good as previous career. Kind of unplayable in combat. 436 aircraft. Presumably every mission is different.

EDIT: 2nd mission of 1 March 1918. 470 aircraft. FPS better then first. Playable in combat - barely. Occasional slowdown - almost stutter.

EDIT: 1st mission for 2 March 1918. 480 aircraft. No combat. FPS, for the first half of the Mission was good. Almost like the initial campaign. Slow down during second half during return trip. Suspect it to be the numerous airfields on the return leg.

Conclusion(?): It’s not just the number of aircraft at Ultra Heavy that determines FPS though that is the main factor I think. A pretty close second are the increased number of ground units (airfields and the front) followed by weather, etc and a dozen other variables probably. No pat easy answer except ultimately dialing down Aerial Activity, and checking Forced Encounter (Medium probably) in 1918. My opinion is it seems FPS has to be 50+ for a smooth experience.

That's an INSANE setting to have 800 aircraft up. People moan regarding fps dropping when there's a ton more action in 1918 and you are whacking ultra heavy plus high encounters on and then wondering why FPS is lower?
That's 800 AI pilots all thinking, calculating, let alone all the other strains on a system, some you mentioned above.
Turn AI flight numbers down especially in 1918 when it's already a lot more because it's busy 1918.

Errr. Forced Encounters is at None.
And I wasn’t wondering why. I was wondering how much I have to dial it back to get 50+ FPS in combat.
This wasn’t a WOFF complaint. Thought it was kind of a complement actually.

OK thought you said they were on at some point and you turned it down to medium. Anyway best to leave those off if you want to live through some of 1918, but even ultra heavy in 1918 is probably asking for it, fps wise and death wish wise wink

I may have phrased it poorly especially if you haven’t followed my ramblings here and elsewhere.
Ultra Heavy in 1918 was a PE experiment (plus I got a new vid card) to see how I could do. 1917 (so far!) has always been good. 1918, for obvious reasons, was a test. Went great the first 5 Campaign days then (suddenly) not so much after ergo this thread.

Clearly my machine (though pretty good) can’t hang with Ultra Heavy, with a pending ground offensive, in 1918.
My next step is to dial down the Aerial Activity to get acceptable FPS. If I have to go lower then “Heavy” with AA I thought to put Forced Encounters (currently at None) UP to Medium to compensate if needed. Since I didn’t really fly over the Western Front in 1918 (or any other year for that matter!) I am trying to get and develop a feeling of “Historical Authenticity.”

Could be I misread no worries - it sounds like a plan though.
