As an experiment I turned down Scenery and Terrain Detailing down to “1” in the Workshop while still using PR’s current FPS mod made for “stock WOFF Settings” which I believe was “3” for both.

Could using PR’s mod in the above incorrect circumstances cause my frame rates to go into the crapper? Using the 3/3 mod at 1/1? Just got done with a flight where I had the worse FPS ever - kinda unplayable. Guess I’m not really sure exactly what his mod is doing but it has always worked previously.

Now there is a million reasons in 1918 for poor FPS but this is not my first flight in this time period with PE. Is it the mod (maybe) or should I start making other changes already.

PR did say that only the no. 1 version of the mod should be used with Scenery and Terrain Detail lower than 5. For versions 2-4 the Scenery and Terrain Detail should always be set to 5.

Okay thanks.
Thought I read 3/3 and wondered if 1/1 could somehow be causing an issue.
Better start looking at other things then.

A few more flights and it’s NOT PR’s mod.
Didn’t think so but found the sudden dramatic change in FPS surprising.
Guess I can’t hang with Air Activity at “Ultra Heavy” in 1918. frown
Time to go computer shopping.

Did you try Mod version 1 with low settings? Airfield detail also has pretty big effect on performance in my experience.

I did.
I strongly suspect (unless my computer has somehow changed in the past 36 hours) that it is my Air Activity setting of “Ultra Heavy” in 1918.
But since (in-game) the same number of squadrons were being factored into the campaign during the previous game days (right?) I really don’t get the sudden change which oddly started when I tried 1/1 and but has persisted. Weather really hasn’t changed much but loading times have increased and my FPS is half. Suddenly.

Thought I was really cool and going to enjoy 1918. Go figure!

Oh, dear! Ultra heavy in 1918? eek2 . No doubt you have performance problems.

Right?
That is what I assumed when I first started campaigns there (and was set to dial it back) but the first 5 days of campaign time things were smooth as silk. FPS 120-55 depending on the view.
Then suddenly on Day 6. 7, and 8 (right after my 1/1 experiment but continuing) of the Campaign my FPS has gone down by more then half. That’s what has me perplexed!
If this was a gradual thing then maybe I could understand it but it was like someone threw a switch.

The number of squadrons being processed really should not have changed. A major offensive starts in two weeks though but is a influx of ground units arriving and then being tracked? I don’t think so.

That assumption is correct. You'll need to do more test missions with and without the MOD to determine if it's related or not. If you begin to see a pattern, then it's the MOD, otherwise, if there is no pattern, then it could be something in your operating system behaving erratically.

Very funny Ace_Pilto!
And thanks orbyxP. It is very strange but if you are guessing like me I will continue experimenting and see.
Do have a couple mods going but nothing that should be impacting here and they have always been in the mix.

I think there are quiet periods of air activity so maybe the first days just happened to be light and/or your missions were in a light area. I'd recommend you turn your graphics settings back to where they were before and reduce the activity and see if you can get acceptable performance with reasonable air activity. I have been using Heavy even for 1916 and I'm still running into other flights pretty consistently. With ultra I'd imagine most of the action is happening far beyond where you would ever fly on your missions.

In case you do decide to get a new computer or CPU: Make sure you get one with good single thread performance specifically. Something like AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or 3600X for 200-250€ can get you similar or better single thread performance than some CPUs that cost three or four times as much. I'm not sure if there are any CPUs around that could handle Ultra Heavy air activity in the busiest 1918 though smile.

Yes that is a definite possibility I considered - that while all Squadrons are in the game and being “processed” (though in a minor non-CPU intensive fashion because, as you say it’s “Quiet” and their not being actively deployed on flights) that the game is bringing more of these Quiet Squadrons online and active, so to speak, as time goes on now resulting in a increased CPU load. Short of some change with my computer (that I am not aware of) that makes the most sense.

Must have been a hell of a supply train overnight!

You might take a campaignmission, where you think it was a good test and drop it into the scenario folder. There you can fly this very same mission over and over again. This is better for testing different settings than having different missions each time with different circumstances and flights, weather etc.

Oooo good call.
I’ll dig around and see if I can find it.

That is genius suggestion. I will remember this for my testing purposes as well. Thanks, Creaghorn.

A torture "canned" mission was post a year ago or so that really stressed your PC to see if you could fly 200+ planes at the same time,

I have it and use it for that purpose, but can not remember who created it.

Okay. I try not to be too stupid here, really, but what is the file name of my last campaign flight please?
Looked, clicked, did several searches for the the name(s) I thought it was and no joy.
