As kindly requested by AceMedic, I'm posting below approximate service dates (give or take a month or two) for aircraft types included in my FM packages, for those who like to fly historically in WOFFue/pe/bh2.

Happy flying,
Von S smile

----------

Nieups. 17, 17bis, 23, 24bis, 24, 27 - standard service dates for these Vickers-armed variants (common types)

Bristol Scout Type C - Mar./Apr. to Dec. 1915 (somewhat common; more common than the earlier Type B variant represented by the stock Bristol Scout)

8Ba Hisso.-powered Se5a - Sept./Oct. 1917 to Nov. 1918 (not very common, but best of the Scout Experimentals)

Pfalz D.III and III.a - about Sept. to Dec. 1917 for the D.III, III.a follows to end of war (both types fairly common)

Alb. D.V and uprated D.V - standard service dates (both types somewhat common; not as common as the later D.Va)

Fok. D.VI Siemens-Halske upgrade - about summer of 1918 to end of war (extremely rare upgrade; any variant of the D.VI is largely uncommon; use the stock Fok. D.VI prior to the summer of 1918)

Fok. D.VIII - Oct. and Nov. of 1918 (somewhat uncommon; for summer of 1918 use the stock Fok. E.V instead, which has a slower top speed)

Pfalz A.I - standard service dates (of mid/late 1915; somewhat uncommon)

Pfalz E.III 95hp - standard service dates (of second half of 1915, appeared before the E.I and E.II Pfalz variants, by the way, and is rare; use the stock 100hp E.III for first half of 1916, also rare)

Morane Parasol L early - used from beginning of war to about the end of 1915 (common)

Morane Parasol L late - used for most of 1916/early 1917 (somewhat common; P type, with the spinner, becomes more prevalent by 1916/early 17)

Fokker Dr. 1 early - about Sept. to Nov. of 1917 (somewhat common; suffered from top wing problems/failures)

Fokker Dr. 1 "gaskammer" - about Dec. of 1917 to March/April of 1918 (common)

Benz-powered (early) Alb. D.I 150 hp - about Sept. to early Nov. 1916 (somewhat uncommon; poorer climb rate than on the Mercedes-powered Alb. D.I)

SPAD 17 300 hp - Aug. to Nov. 1918 (very rare; only about 20 or so of the type delivered; similar in shape to the SPAD 13, with a very slightly thicker fuselage)

Aviatik B/B.I (very early) 100-105 hp - used from beginning of war to about Jan./Feb. 1916 (somewhat common; replaces the common, stock Aviatik B.I (early) that has service dates from about the summer of 1915 to about Mar./Apr. 1916 and that, while slightly faster, handles more poorly than the very early B/B.I)

Fokker-built D.VII 195-205 hp - June to Nov. 1918 (common; slightly better performing than the OAW-built 200 hp D.VII but a bit more fragile)

Very nice!
Thank you VonS. I especially like your thoughts on availability - very rare, etc.
Another cut & paste for the WOFF Library of Knowledge. I wasn't aware that the 110 HP Camel was "not common." Quite the opposite in fact.

This info is too valuable to loose. I'd ask to post this as a sticky in the FAQ/References section.

Thanks gents' for the comments - I might include this post as a pdf file in a possible, future version (5.0) of my FM pack. I'm thinking eventually of combing over the parasol types, and also taking a look at the Nieups. 17 and 24.

(The 110hp LeRhone powered the Camel prototypes and early production models. As far as I know the 130hp Clerget was the most common power plant on the Camels - good balance of power and maneuverability with the Clerget...although the 110hp variant should be more docile in flight. In terms of the Fokk. Dr.1, the stock one in WOFFue/pe seems to have a top speed in the mid/low 180s kph - that is the common, "gaskammer" variant with improved air-intake on the Oberursel 110hp (probably giving a real output of about 120hp) - I think Mikael Carlson's Dr.1 also has that same power plant. Early non-gaskammered variants of the Oberursel would have given top speeds in the mid 160s to low 170s kph estimated. This explains the confusing array of top speeds cited for the Dr.1 in the literature and also online. What I'll never understand is why the Tripehound was retired when it was. An engined-up two-gun variant would have done just fine well into 1918 - although the Tripe was a maintenance nightmare.)

I think you hit it on the head - the Triplane, while apparently a great combat aircraft which oddly I've never flown in WOFF, was indeed a maintenance nightmare and one of the big reasons it was phased out for other models which were easier to produce in numbers, maintain in the field, and performed just as well if not better. Looking at you Camel.
In a combat aircraft assorted damage is all too common. Rough landings, forced landings, accidents, hours in the air, and just everyday wear and tear required these planes to constantly be serviced. Plus the occasional lucky Hun or archie. Doped canvas and wood! Imperfect metallurgy and fit. Constant work needed. This maintenance was not Triplane specific but it had to be serviced regularly like all aircraft.
For an example I have read that to work on the gas tank and fuel system you had to remove the wings. Sounds a bit cumbersome alright.

Reminds me of the Harrier. To change the engine, you had to take the whole wing off..

On a related note, back in the mid-1980's one of my sergeants came back from a 6-month detachment to the Falklands. Among his photographs were pics of Harriers (GR3s) in the mud, in front of Bessonneau hangars.. La plus ça change..
(Yes, we still had Bessoneaus then, until the late 1980s..Well, they still worked!)

Is your FM 6.0 released yet? Have I missed the download somewhere?

Royce

Any chance you can post the download somewhere other than CombatAce? I've tried to recover my password and set up new accounts using different email addresses only to have the same result: no confirmation of new a new account associated with my new email and account is suspended...

@ Mike, most surprised to see the Bessonneau surviving as late as the 80s (was curious so I did some Googling and it looks like some lasted as late as about 2010 or so either in the UK or France (flying clubs, etc.)). There's also one that's still intact and located in Canada on a farm (close to Calgary), from what I've been able to find on the internet - apparently still used to store crop-dusters, but as a permanent, wood structure (no canvas on the outside anymore).

@ royce, no worries - I still have to tinker with the Halbs. and perhaps to carry over some of the Nieup. tweaks to the Lewis-armed (RFC) ones - will release that eventually as a ver. 7.0 FM package - nothing much to tweak after that as far as I'm concerned, unless OBD throws in a Longhorn or Shorhorn, Bleriot XI (or maybe the rare side-by-side two-seater type 27 Bleriot...was that one even used in the war?), the Morane Type N, maybe a Pfalz Triplane, perhaps a float-plane or two (maybe the Rumpler C.I or the Alb. D.II with floats?) - okay I'll stop with the wish list now.

@ djm, will move the WOFF FM tweaks package to Dropbox in a day or two and will post the link under the thread for the ver. 6.0 FM pack (located a few threads below this one currently)

On a somewhat related note, I see that Carlson's Pfalz D.VIII has already flown a couple of times:

Part I
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J9P1mamdYA

Part II
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyxTZqC0Pok

Great-sounding engine, and with that big four-bladed prop too.

All fixed now - please see the alternate/open link to the FM update pack located in the first post of the "Ver. 6.0 FM" package thread. Didn't have to bother with Dropbox since I came up with another solution (file still hosted at CombatAce but doesn't require an account now to download).

Thanks for this VonS makes it so easy to find the dates (using your FM pack for BHAH II) ...page Bookmarked.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
