AMD Outselling Intel By More Than Double – Analyzing 5-Year Historical Sales At Mindfactory.de

AMD CPU sales consistently beat Intel’s after 2H 2018

The data clearly shows that the entire AMD comeback is on the back of Zen architecture alone. In fact, if you look at the chart you will see AMD’s sales increasing sharply as soon as Summit Ridge (Zen 1) launched

What I would really be interested in seeing is similar data from Amazon – because it has access to a much larger (and global) sample size and would be the most statistically significant data set around.

AMD delays Ryzen 9 3950X launch due to unsatisfactory clock speeds, sources claim

Unsatisfactory clock speeds are the cause of AMD delaying launch of its 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X processor, which has nothing to do with support from its foundry partner TSMC, according to sources at motherboard makers.

Speculation is that hitting the Boost Clocks is the main issue. Base clocks are easily hit. Moreover, the Ryzen automatically overclocks well above Base on all 8 cores simultaneously.

The issue may be more about the appearance of False Advertising of maximum single-core boost -- rather than actual lack of practical multi-core performance.

Rumor : AMD Zen 3 [Data Center] Architecture to Support up to 4 Threads Per Core With SMT4 Feature

AMD won’t be the first ever company to do this kind of thing. some iterations of IBM’s Power architecture support up to eight execution threads per core. However, if the rumors are to be believed, AMD will be the first ever to introduce an x86 microarchitecture capable of executing more than two threads per core.

As noted here when Ryzen Zen 1 first appeared (a couple years ago), the game is now cores and threads. Intel has begun competing on cores and threads and most software is optimized for Intel CPUs; so, more software will be written to use multiple cores and threads -- even games.

Intel wants a new type of [on CPU] memory

Dubbed SAPM -- or Speculative-Access Protected Memory -- it is the work of Intel STORM (STrategic Offensive Research & Mitigations), a team of security researchers that Intel assembled since 2017 to work on creating mitigations for all the speculative-execution attacks that have impacted the CPU maker's products.

SAPM is only in Intel's heads yet, and there are no silicon prototypes.

The boffins don't deny that there's a performance hit [with the new approach] but it is low and could be mitigated further by dropping other existing protections.

In simple terms, AMD CPUs have had hardware protection built in for years. That's why its an Intel problem, and not currently an AMD problem.

Long term, Intel will almost certainly fix the issues in products coming out a couple years from now. Meantime, software fixes slow Intel down -- and costs them commercial business sales.

As often noted, this does not affect most gamers. For practical purposes, AMD and Intel are competitive -- just pick the one you want based on price, core count, clock speed, and motherboard.

AMD’s Radeon RX 5500 is its new entry-level competitor to Nvidia’s GTX 1650

AMD is producing two versions of the new GPU. The RX 5500 is for desktop machines, while the RX 5500M is for laptops. The company boasts that the cards should offer better performance than Nvidia’s GTX 1650 and GTX 1650 Mobile GPUs respectively

AMD did say that it expected its partners to begin releasing versions of the RX 5500 in the next quarter, but it didn’t provide a more specific release date beyond that.

No real solid info from AMD on the RX 5500 GPUs. AMD did indicate they perform better than GTX 1650 in AMD tests.

No reference version. All cards custom. So, we have to wait for test reports.

TSMC is AMD's 7nm supplier for CPUs and GPUs. 7nm+ manufacturing is already here for future AMD CPUs and GPUs. So, AMD should stay on schedule with its upcoming 7nm+ CPUs and GPUs.

TSMC Achieves HVM On Its 7nm+ EUV Process – Next Generation CPUs And GPUs On 7nm EUV Are Now A Go

TSMC has confirmed that it has achieved High Volume Manufacturing (HVM) on its critical 7nm+ Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) process. This is a landmark event... This is something Intel and Samsung have yet to manage..

N7+ provides 15% to 20% more density and improved power consumption, making it an increasingly popular choice for the industry’s next-wave products.

With AMD ramping up to Zen 3 and its EPYC promotion and adoption in full swing, this is a great signal for [AMD] investors because it shows that their primary bottleneck (the foundry) is charging ahead full steam as well.

Exclusive: Next Generation AMD Mobility 7nm CPUs Landing In Q1 2020, Will Bring AMD Gaming Laptops Price Down To $699

AMD's next-generation mobility parts will include a 6-core 7nm Ryzen processor that will bring the cost of AMD gaming laptops with discrete graphics down to just $699 - a pretty steep price cut for the average consumer.

The AMD 6-core Ryzen 5 7nm mobility CPU will have a 12-hour+ battery life

It gets even better, I am told that the new AMD 7nm part (specifically the 6-core) is netting almost 12 hours in battery life for day to day use, which makes it perfect for the thin and light form factor.

AMD Commands 30%+ CPU Market Share [CPUs in use] For 1st Time in 12 Years According to Latest CPUBenchmark Data

AMD's 3rd Gen Ryzen Continues to Crush it in the DIY Hardware Channel - Outsells Intel 4 to 1 [at German retail]

the cpubenchmark.net database tracks CPUs in use rather than CPUs sold, making it a much heavier needle to move than other indicators. However, once you understand that about the data from cpubenchmark you will find that it is highly consistent with what we’ve been seeing over the past several months. All of AMD’s high-end 3rd generation Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 processors are consistently sold-out across every major retailer we’ve seen in North America and Europe.

[AMD] to launch the highly anticipated 16 core Ryzen 9 3950X next month, alongside its entirely new lineup of 3rd generation Threadripper processors based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture.

Rumor : AMD Bringing Ray Tracing Support to Navi in December

Ray Tracing Code Spotted in AMD Drivers

while specialized hardware can help accelerate ray tracing it is not a requirement to support Microsoft's DirectX Ray Tracing feature.

The company is allegedly targeting its big December driver release to introduce ray tracing support for its Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards. In fact, ray tracing code has already been spotted in the company's graphics drivers for Microsoft's recently released Gears 5 .

The State of Ray Tracing, A Must-Have or a Gimmick?

even though some graphics cards such as the GeForce RTX 2060 do in fact have hardware acceleration for ray tracing, it is debatable whether the card is actually powerful enough to run the feature at enjoyable framerates and graphics settings. After all, who would want to turn down settings and play at a lower resolution and lower framerates than what they're used to just to turn on one graphics feature.

I notice in the attached AMD graphic, they are aimed at cloud based FULL ray tracing "someday". That makes some sense because we're years (or maybe never) from a GPU being powerful enough for full ray tracing -- at an affordable price.

Rumor: Intel Says Biggest Advantage Against AMD is Their Financial Horsepower, Price Cuts and Discounts Cost Chipzilla Around $3 Billion

The $3.0 billion figure is the total cost Intel says they are willing to pay just to disrupt competition from AMD in 2019. This cost could include price cuts, discounts, etc for the current and upcoming lineup.

It was until 2017 that we were still getting [Intel] quad cores as flagship processors but [high AMD core counts] prompted Intel to push up their core counts

Intel tried to pull off some cheap marketing stunts by calling AMD's Infinity Fabric interconnect as glued-down dies, using dubious 3rd party benchmarks for CPU comparisons and telling reviewers to change their benchmarking methodologies that reflect their own 'real-world usage' standards.

In the end, all of this [competition] means good news for the consumer market which should resurge with many decent options for all tiers of users.

As noted several times in this thread, over a decade ago AMD had the best CPUs. Then too, Intel spent a lot to keep the market. However, back then, Intel paid manufacturers "under the table" to not use AMD products -- I.e. Intel broke the law at the expense of the consumer (proven in court). For that reason some of us consumers became AMD fans.

Now, AMD has the best CPUs again and Intel's "above board" market competition based on giving better value to the consumer is Good smile

Rumor: Intel To Skip 10nm For Desktop CPUs, Will Offer 7nm Desktop CPUs in 2022

Intel seems to have dropped all plans for a 10nm desktop processor launch and are now aiming to release 7nm desktop processors in 2022. The information comes from Hardwareluxx who have got a tip from their trustworthy insiders..

The report says that Intel's 10nm supply just isn't enough to handle mass markets such as desktop at the moment which is why they will be offering 14nm replacements up till 2022

This more or less means that Intel would have to rely on their 'Financial Horsepower' to remain competitive against AMD for the next couple of years.

There's a realistic chance AMD will have 5nm going before Intel has 7nm. The chart shows the progression of Intel CPUs over the last several years and up to 2022 (rumored).

Intel denies above rumor.

Quote
Chipzilla says desktop 10nm is still a thing

The rumours started by the normally reliable “Insiderkreisen” speaking to Andreas Schilling at HardwareLuxx. They were all over the tech press, often quoting Intel insiders. It might have been dismissed, other than the fact that appears so plausible.

Intel has now officially responded, promising that its “current roadmap of 10nm products includes desktop.”

Intel said: “We continue to make great progress on 10nm, and our current roadmap of 10nm products includes desktop.

10nm has "always" been on the Intel "current" roadmap. But, the above sources and another I value, say work on a line of 10nm CPUs to replace 14nm has been halted and 10nm manufacturing facilities are being repurposed to 7nm.

This is a "we'll see" how it turns out in a year or two. Not a bad thing if Intel actually does give consumers a 10nm part to choose from.

AMD Powers Europe’s Most Powerful Supercomputer Ever With 748,544 Zen 2 Cores

The UK government announced today that it has awarded the contract for the country's next generation national supercomputer to Cray, a supercomputing specialist subsidiary of HP.

When ARCHER2 goes into operation next year it is expected to be the 5th most powerful supercomputer in the world and the most powerful CPU-only supercomputer in the world.

Waayyy back in the day, our NASA facility had one of the first Cray supercomputers -- 64 (very very slow by today's standards) cores -- programmed in FORTRAN -- Wow!

Now, the cellphone in your pocket is faster than our Cray was -- and this new Cray has 748544 very fast cores smile

Oh, by the way, our Cray filled a room -- a bit larger than a cellphone biggrin

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT & RX 5700 Lead Graphics Card Sales in Europe & Asia

It took quite a while before custom cooled AIB versions of AMD's reference Radeon RX 5700 & Radeon RX 5700 XT designs came out. However, ever since they did they have been selling well across the globe.

They're doing especially well in Europe and Asia. Computerbase.de reports that the top 3 most popular graphics cards that readers were looking at on the site have all been Navi graphics cards

A plausible rumor regarding Intel. Maybe the real use for Intel 10nm will be GPUs.
