The age old battle between the two (former) long running aussie icons Ford and Holden were Falcon left and Commodore right. My Hyundai is left, and has the arrow icon near the fuel icon, some of my old aussie muscle cars were behind the number plate or on the right. We've had this discussion in the workshop before and there doesn't seem to be any real reason why the choice is made as either side or the rear could be chosen at the design stage.

I know that all cars don't have an indicator to show what side to fill up on, some do, some don't.

I always assumed that the little fuel pump icon on your dashboard showed you what side to use, because, whatever side the fuel hose and nozzle was on the little icon, that corresponded to what side the filler cap was on as well.

I have an admission to make. I didn't know that Mad Max's car was a Ford Falcon until many years after I saw "The Road Warrior".

Ok, I'll turn in my man card now. biggrin

That you have some standadization with steering wheel, (left-to-right) clutch, brake, gas pedal in exactly that order is due to standardization requirements by the French Army in WW1. 110 years ago every car manufacturer had completely own ideas about the user interface. In the early 1990s I was driving two different Citroens which couldn't agree on the norm of having sticks for blinker, lights, or wiper. The Citroen Visa had a drum-shaped multi-function "satellite" concept, the CX used yet another approach (both were actually quite convenient to operate, contrary to what one might think); fun fact: The junkie that smashed the glass of the rear passenger door when raiding my car (and a dozen others on the same parking lot) couldn't find the button to unlock the car when he was inside, so he had to worm out of the same rear window again. biggrin
(He then proceeded to open the locks of my crappy briefcase with the knife that he had found in my glove box, right in front of a police station (which was placed strategically to monitor the junkies). So the officers went out and asked if they could be of assistance wink , found my name and address, and eventually learned about the parking lot raid.)
So, that was my (and Citroen's) contribution to the "solved crimes" statistic of the City of Hannover, Germany, 1992.

...I never got the soap and wiping swabs back that he stole from my NBC protection bag that happened to be in the car as well. (I was in the army at the time, moving from one post to the next).

I grew up in a heavily urbanized area with lots of traffic and my driver's ed class in high school only had automatics so hence I never learned how to drive a stick shift. I do realize that in Europe manual transmission cars are still quite prevalent.

Just a quick google and I see that in 2018 there were 8.4 million automatics in the UK. Total number of cars approx 38.4 million.

That's a lot higher that I was expecting. I'm not sure if that auto number includes all auto types like semi-auto,CVT etc.

Figures from 2016 show that only 3.9 % of cars sold in the US were manual.

Is it fair to assume then that the average Joe if given a manual would be stumped?

I think it's largely dependent on age. My educated guess is that the great majority of people who can drive a manual transmission in the US are over 40 while the majority of people under 40 would have no clue. In my case, I most likely would have learned how to drive a manual transmission had I grown up in a rural area of the US.

I have always thought that drivers ed should be done on a manual transmission. It is easy to go from there to an automatic but difficult to go the other way. I learned to drive on an automatic and learned, the hard way, when I bought a car with a manual transmission.

I believe learning on a manual make for a better driver. It is not stomp on the gas and go. Don't really even feel like I am driving a manual now as it comes naturally (automatically). Not sure how to say it, but when learning one has to think of what is going on around one on a manual.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

In the UK if you pass your driving test in an automatic then that is all you are licenced for, if you pass with a manual then you can drive both manual and automatic.

When I started to drive - at 12 years old it was in a lorry with a crash gearbox ie. no syncromesh and you had to double de clutch to change gear, you got to know how to match the engine rpm with the road speed of the gear you were selecting and if you got it right then you could shift gears without using the clutch at all.

Now, my main car is the only car in the household that is an automatic, my other car is a manual and it is a really slow manual change on it, you have to take your time and not rush the gear change, but it is designed to handle 600hp.

Can you show a pic of your Ford Focus, interested to see if it is the same as the EU/UK Ford Focus.

A good number of years ago I was over in Canada and the neighbouring farmer gave me a lift in his Ford Escort, but in the UK we would call that model a Ford Mondeo.
