What a horribly generalized and vague statement made by that sensationalized article. There are plenty of affordable places to live in the US but if a retiree wants to live like a king on their modest retirement savings then what better way to do it than to live in an expat enclave in a third world country?

It's probably a great life until the locals get tired of the rich gringos.

I would not even think about living in Panama or any other central or south American nation. Too much corruption and political madness. Portugal is very nice , low crime rate and politically stable . I don't ever plan on moving from Canada though ( unless the Greenies made it illegal to not live in a cave )

Spent time in Central America. Nothing wrong with the people. Governments are deplorable. History of foreign owned property confiscation. Corruption. Hand and Cartel violence and influence.

If it were good there, why the mass movement fleeing to US ?

If it was good, how can there be asylum claims ?

It's like anything else .... location location. Probably aren't too many countries that don't have dangerous areas or government issues.

There's plenty of countries which would fit that bill but those would probably be considered too expensive for those retirees in the article you posted. wink

Yea for sure Panzer some are ..... for example Australia is mentioned but retirees (unless they changed the rules) need to show they have at least 500K in savings to move to Australia and retire.

Both Canada and Australia want reassurance that expat retirees can pay for their own healthcare since they never worked in the country and thus never paid anything into their public healthcare systems. That’s both sensible and smart.

wow ... 2 million ! Archie ....."I would not even think about living in Panama or any other central or south American nation. Too much corruption and political madness"

Lot of American retirees in Panama because its a politically stable country and has modern highways and high literacy rate. Since the Panama canal is an extremely important shipping lane for global trade there are plenty of countries that want Panama to remain a stable country.

Panama isn't quite Costa Rica-level "nice" and stable but it's close. Either way you are correct in you assessment since Panama has made huge strides in its development since the 90's.

People are naive and have a Puffy Cloud Unicorn view of Costa Rica. It was pretty good, for Central America, but is being dragged down by its neighbors.

Look, things are bad and getting worse through virtually all of Central America. Anyone who would move there for a “better life” is nuts.
