Read this this little trick for remembering the side of the vehicle you gas cap is when pulling into the gas station for filling the tank, if you forget which side.

Never noticed before but there is a little diamond shaped arrow on the fuel gauge which indicated what side of the vehicle the fuel cap is.

Now I haven't looked yet on my vehicle so am curious if this is true.

It would seem that left side drive cars it is on the left and on right side drive it is on the right. This placement is decided upon where the cars are designed. So, if one has a British car but has the steering wheel on the left, is the gas cap on the right?

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

When you say "British car" are you referring to a car that is actually built in the UK or just a car that is a British BRAND. There are plenty of UK brands like Jaguar, Land Rover and Aston Martin that are built in different countries. So if it's a car built in the UK I would think both the steering wheel and the gas cap would be on the right while the British branded cars built in other countries would be different.

yes there is an indicator on the fuel gauge that shows which side the fill is on. I don't think that the placement of the filler correlate exactly with where the vehicle is made though. My Jaguar has the filler on the left ( EU ) side and my GMC Terrain has it on the right (UK ) side .

PM, were they designed in the UK or designed in the country where they were built?

LOL Alicatt. My Harley has the gas cap on the right. Fuel gauge on the left.

Traditionally Ford pick-ups have had the gas cap on the driver's (left) side. For many years Chevy/GMC had them on the right side, unless they had dual tanks in which case it had a cap on each side. The last two cars my wife has had (Nissan Xterra and Jeep Renegade) the gas cap is on the right side. I personally think any engineer who designs a vehicle with the gas cap on the side opposite the driver should be publicly flogged. But that's just me.

Location seems random. Some on the left and some on the right. It always screws with me since I have a few cars and often pull in to a station based on what I’ve been driving recently, only to find it on the other side.

I am often thrown by how to open. One car has a lever on the floor, one a push button on the door, another push button in glove compartment. And some don’t require a button, just push on the filler door. I often get out, push on the filler door only to get no response, then hesitate trying to remember where the release is.

My father's jaguars had them on both sides, his Vauxhall Velox had it behind the number plate, the Morris 1ton 4x4 had one on each side but it had two separate tanks with a change over valve on the left side above the tank, my Morris Mini van had it on the left, all those vehicles are right hand drive.

From memory it was always that the filler was on the side closest to the kerb as the pumps were usually on that side when you went to fill up.

But has anyone noticed the little indicator on the gas gauge to tell you which side the filler point is?

it's there on all the vehicles we own, and has been since at least the 1970s, the first I remember seeing it was on my uncle's 1969 Saab 99.

I've driven more company vehicles than I can count - known of the gas cap indicator forever, and I've never seen any rhyme or reason as to placement.

If they were still behind the rear license plate like on proper cars from the past, this wouldn’t even be an issue and you could pull to either side of the pump.

That’s why I like my Jeep, no buttons or levers to fiddle with and the vehicle is narrow enough that even the short hoses will reach from either side.

Last vehicle was a 96 Buik Regal. Filler cap on the drivers side. Current vehicle is a 02 Pontiac Grand Am. Filler cap is on the passenger side. Both have a little dot on the fuel gauge that illuminates when it thinks you may run out of petrol. I put half a tank in this afternoon, so I can not check which side of the gauge the light is. But, the fuel pump drawing is on the passenger side, which matches the filler.

I have driven 2,387 miles since Christmas (turned 60K on Christmas day). That is a lot of trips to the spares shop. smile I have been busy this year.

A bigger pet pieve is the oil level dipstick for motorcycles and ATVs. Screw it in or not? That should be a standard and is not, even within the same manufacturer.

Ah, you mean the petrol filler cap on my cars! smile
My VW Passat it's on the right, Wife's Vauxhall, on the left, both r/h drive of course.

Wish i knew about the indicator with cars and vans I've hired! The hire company don't reveal this nugget. Spent an embarrassing length of time on a busy petrol station forecourt mystified as to the location of it and when found, how to open the flap (one has to open the passenger door) on a Mercedes Sprinter van recently. Even sent an email to Enterprise suggesting they impart this information when vehicle is collected in future.

Yes, and when I drive a rental, I always check that before pulling into a gas (petrol) station.

As recently as 2000 some cars have no gas filler side indicator on the fuel gauge, was looking for that in a 2000 Chevy van recently and it wasn't there.

I drive a Fiat Scudo van for work... and I have to remember the cap is on the left cos... there's no arrow on the fuel gauge...and it's a 2016 vintage..

(it's also not the best of vans in many other ways...I really miss the transit custom from my old employer...)
