I haven't read the article yet but do Uber and Lyft even do background checks before they hire a driver? "Uber’s investigative process is broken, according to people who have worked there, stymied by Uber’s insistence that its drivers are independent contractors and not employees — and therefore it isn’t responsible for their actions. Many Uber investigators said they understood that if they contacted the police or advised victims to do so, they could be reprimanded or even fired. Uber asserts it is a technology platform, or the middleman, between riders and drivers, and so it generally cannot be held culpable for what occurs during a ride. But alleged crimes — especially sexual misconduct — happen during ride-hailing trips at an alarming rate, investigators said. In Chicago alone, more than 300 drivers were banned from Uber, Lyft and rival Via for allegations of sexual misconduct between January 2016 and August 2019]""The background check includes a Motor Vehicle Record review and a criminal background check. Local laws and regulations often establish the specific background check criteria that Uber applies, and these criteria can vary significantly from state to state. Uber focuses a lot of effort on screening drivers to assess their driving record. They also have a strict criterion where no one with a major moving violation within the last seven years will be accepted. Uber itself does not actually perform the background checks. They contract this out to a third-party background check provider that is accredited by the National Association of Professional Background Screeners. The fact that they contract out the work of background screenings makes it difficult for anyone to win a lawsuit against them by claiming they were negligent in performing background screenings. All their background screenings are performed by a well-respected industry leader and that should inoculate them against most claims of negligence."

There are two things that you shouldn't do...especially women. Go somewhere alone to meet someone you met on the internet, and get into a car with a stranger. Uber requires you to do both of these things!

Uber requires you to do both of these things! I use taxicabs, from time to time, for various reasons and would never consider using Uber or Lyft. I know plenty of young men and women that use them frequently. Often to come home after going out drinking, which just compounds the risk factor.

Another danger of using Uber or Lyft is that the cars are not always clearly marked, like a cab would be. I think there have been a few instances where someone got into a car thinking it was their Uber ride and they were never heard from again. A girl in SC was murdered recently in just such a case.

I think there have been a few instances where someone got into a car thinking it was their Uber ride and they were never heard from again. If that is happening it would make me wonder how secure the communications are, or are the perps just trolling likely locations in hopes of finding a victim. When I exit the subway station on the way to the car park, I see people getting into what I assume are Uber rides and I do wonder about that.

Well, see. I'm sure your wife would agree with me, completely!

California just passed a Bill that forces Uber and Lyft to treat their drivers as employees making the "it's not our problem" defense no longer tenable. Most likely other states will follow suit.
Wheels Uber and Lyft are screwed in this case especially since both companies are based in CA!
