When the U.S. invaded Panama in 1989 I was driving an 18 wheeler long-haul. At the time I was making regular trips through San Antonio. At night there was a continual stream of C-5s landing and taking off from Randolph Field. Sometimes you could count as many as five aircraft in the landing pattern and five out-bound. It amazed me how slow those huge planes looked as they came in on final. It didn't seem possible they could stay airborne. I guess it's a trick of the eyes due to the size of the plane and it being farther away than you think it is.

From what I have heard, Fairchild AFB is hosting an international re-fueling coop. Airforces from around the world are flying in for it. Facebook is lit up over it. https://www.fairchild.af.mil/

When I was in Poland last month, we saw an Antanov come in for a landing and the next day watched one take off. THOSE things were friggin HUGE! I don't know how they can stay in the sky!

I flew one from California to the Middle East. Took about 5 or 6 days. They're big and it fit an entire HMLA squadron and then some, but man are they slow. We were the first plane to leave the West coast that day, and the last to arrive on the East Coast. And it broke down, a lot. Spent about 18 hours on the East Coast waiting on repairs. Crawled across the Atlantic and spent another 3 days and 4 failed take offs in Spain.
While the main floor is a giant cavern that's larger than many buildings, that small top floor they stick passengers is tiny with the most uncomfortable and cramped seats I've seen on any aircraft. You can't even fit in it, much less your bag. Give me a C130 with webbed seats any day of the week. Hell, I'll take a cramped 7 ton truck ride, off road, through the desert heat and dust over another C5 flight.
On the final take off attempt in Spain we were told by the crew that we're pressing on despite any problems and if they needed to land again we wouldn't circle around again, but press on to Italy. We got excited and thought we'd get to see Italy. It made it that whole leg from Spain to the ME though. There was much disappointment.
A C-17 on the other hand, that's luxury flying and they're fast as hell.

I'd seen a couple at static displays, but the first time I TRULY got the feel for their size was years later. I was leaving Perris drop zone. As I was approaching March AFB I saw a C-141 sitting on the tarmac while another 141 was taxiing considerably farther away. Then the taxiing plane crossed between me and the one parked and I realized that the parked one was actually a Galaxy. It was literally like seeing a 3/4 size aircraft next to its full size counterpart.
SALUTE TO ALL!

When I was stationed at Ft Bragg from 87-89 our barracks were the wooden WW2 ones in “Old Division,” maybe 1/2 mile or so from the runway at Pope AFB. All hours of the day and night we had C130s and C141s going overhead, very few C5s because they apparently can’t fly very well at normal drop speed and the 82d didn’t have any equipment a C141 couldn’t handle. But when one did, it was so big compared to a C141 and appeared to be so low that it looked like the still-retracting landing gear would hit the barracks roof.
And that’s a big roger on the comfort level of the passenger seating, we had an EDRE (Emergency Deployment Readiness Exercise) one time and my platoon was the one that had the honor of prepping our tracks for air transport, carrying sheets of plywood from the back to the front of the track the whole way across the ramp to prevent damage to the ramp, and then dealing with a very particular loadmaster. We flew around for a few hours then landed back at Pope to simulate our destination, and went through the same procedure in reverse. I would have rather sat in the track with the other 2 men of the crew and all our gear than sit in those seats again, and it had less room than a full-size pickup.

Deep rumble in the sky...all the village (those not at work!) turned out to watch a B2 sailing serenely overhead. Rare sight in this part of England. Loud bugger it be.
