Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
|
As I use in my location sig: Ice Cold in Alex https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053935/ Brit film in the desert My home town is Alexandria in Scotland not the one in the middle east, So the eating in Eksel is where I am now and the cold of Alexandria in Scotland is my home. Great film and watched them winching that truck over the sand dunes many times. Probably the best end to a film ever...

Hollywood has no obligation to create those movies. However, we should be open to watching those subjects from the film industries of the countries in question. I hope I didn't come across as insinuating that Hollywood was somehow obligated to create movies like these but I am indeed curious to see what types of subject matter and perspectives Hollywood won't touch or rarely touch. I didn't misunderstand you. I just thought I'd mention it.

Night of The Generals is a little known film that I saw many years ago. It stars Peter O'Toole and Omar Sheriff. It's a war/murder mystery.

German airman acting as a spy for US Army 1945. Oskar Werner Cpl. Karl Maurer aka Happy, Richard Basehart Lt. Dick Rennick.
the Third Man and Decision Before Dawn were both made a few years after the War - excellent movies

There are of course plenty of war movies not made in Hollywood that depict war from a non-US perspective. But I suppose this thread isn't about them. I know that. The point of my thread was to explore WHY Hollywood has barely made any war movies from the perspective of an enemy nation. In other words, exploring the genres that Hollywood likes to concentrate on and the genres it ignores either for business reasons or political reasons.

Hollywood makes movies that it expects to be profitable in US theaters; up to the 1990s that was the sole metric, since then international revenue has become important enough to tip the balance of some decisions. But unless there can be an American angle wedged in, Hollywood would never finance a war epic like Talvisota, and I can totally understand that, with the possible exception that a studio exec would want to deliberately burn money out of his personal desire for prestige or something. The film industry is, first and foremost, an industry. It operates on the understanding that each film is supposed to make money (or at least to lose as little as possible, even if you make deliberately crappy movies like the "Fantastic Four" series, just so you can cling on to your film rights and make a better reboot later)

That was about French Soldiers on trial for desertion by French courts martial. They were allied to the UK at the time, and the US joined on that side in 1917. So not really from 'the enemy perspective'

Do civil war films count? If so then all of those... I assume you mean the ACW and not some other one like the English civil war or Somali civil war? When it comes to Hollywood and ACW films it's been surprisingly even handed since "Gettysburg" had the perspective from both sides and "Gods and Generals" was from the Confederate side. "Glory" was from the Union side only but that's understandable when you consider the subject matter.

Still, it can't be nearly as awkward as when he played Genghis Khan. What I like about the film is that John Wayne plays a regular German; he's not a raised arm Nazi, nor is he some morally outraged resistance fighter.* He's a merchant marine captain stuck in Sydney at the start of the war and not wishing to be detained, and the fellows sent to catch him are friends he know in the British Navy. * There is some mention that he's cashiered from the Navy early on for not being a fan of National Socialism and there is the expected Nazi crew member, it's not heavy handed.

The Bridge. Made in West Germany in '59. About a bunch of German teenagers sent to defend a bridge late in the war. Not great but for it's time and being made in Germany, about Germans it was probably a risky movie. Yes, it was quite the scandal back at the time (which is interesting insofar as the actual scandal was the use of child soldiers by the Nazis, but you weren't supposed to debate that). In any case, it's one of the few movies ever made that explores the topic of child soldiers (Johnny Mad Dog would be another one that springs to mind). But Die Brücke doesn't meet the constraints of this debate, as it's not a Hollyweird production. Once that we leave that criterium behind, the floodgates are open to list every non-US war film ever made.
