Combat Mission Battle for Normandy isn't much more dated than Final Blitzkreig to be honest. For me it's the best bang for the buck in CM titles, with the big bundle anyway. It has the most content of any WW2 CM title, especially campaigns. Plus, you know, bocage. And US paratroopers which are hard as nails. CMBN is always the one I recommend first.
Another really good tactical level wargame that gets overlooked is Graviteam Tactics:Mius Front. It's similar to Combat Mission, but you command in more broad strokes, resulting in less micro and less direct control. But it's well done and has the sort of operational layer that Combat Mission sorely lacks. It's decidedly domestic UI is poor in my opinion, but if you can get accustomed to it, this game is really good. It's real-time which can be jarring to the Combat Mission player, but the battles are awesome.
A few other random suggestions based on nothing other than they are all good games
XCOM or XCOM 2 (excellent tactical turn based)
Prey (System Shock spiritual successor)
Combat Mission Red Thunder (my current game as you know carrick, and who doesn't like tank duels at 2200 meters?)
Borderlands 2 (criminally underrated game. Funny, irreverent, fun)
Dishonored and Dishonored 2 (good sneaker/shooters, innovative and fun)
Combat Mission Shock Force 2 (add a modern CM title to your collection. Lots of content)
I could list 376 more games haha, but with all of these being a few years old they should run well on modest hardware and are all quality titles in my view.
