Russ the screens I post may well be from different 150-160 folders with "EAW Versions" folders containing different exes.
Until either 1.28F or 1.29 (I cannot remember which) all eaw.exes were locked into a tile map with 640 columns and 320 rows of tiles
This is the playing area, but when you need to select your target and base you do it from a map screen. The exe displays the "Europe1.pic" so that you can make your choices
However the " "Europe1.pic" shows areas of southern Europe that are not in the playing area like these:
You cannot fly in Italy, Spain or Southern France in the default ETO game, so a lot of the space is wasted, which means that the targets and bases appear closer together than they really need to be.
The "Old Map" system uses the "Europe1.pic" screens and is locked into the 640x320 tile-map irrespective of the theatre.
However, I produced an exe that was not locked into the 640x320 tile-map, and that demanded a new map system, especially in the case where the tile-map was not 640x320.
The "new map" system covers an area that exactly matches the tile-map, so there is no wasted space. It uses the "TargMap.pic" and "TargMap1.pic" files, one of which is for target/base selection and the other is for the in-flight pilot-map.
These views are the equivalent of the previous two, for the same mission, but with the new map exe. Italy, Spain and Southern France are not covered, so you can see how much space is wasted in the "old map" system.
So, if the theatre is not 640x320 you need to use a "new map" exe.
if it is 640x320 then you can use either.
Very few of the "TargMap.pic" and "TargMap1.pic" files are of the graphical quality of the "Europe1.pic" files, but they make target selection easier. However, some users prefer the old maps, and if the tile-set is 640x320 then they are free to use them.
A number of theatres are being worked on which are not 640x320. Moggy's latest project is 640x400 which is the 640x320 ETO map with an extra 80 rows of tiles which cover the Northern Mediterranean, including Montagnac (my current location) , Northern Italy and Northern Corsica. My Solomons and Darwin maps are 500x500.
The first one I made and released for the new system is the WW1 map which is only 256x160
If you need to do some culling make a new folder "Unused" in the "EAW Versions" folder, and check the dates of the exes. Then you can move the older ones into the "Unused" folder.
