Have you ever played any PC games that then inspired you to read the book or series of books it was based on? I'm curious to check out the "Witcher" books as well as the "Metro 2033" books.

Rainbow Six got me into Tom Clancy’s books.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Right there with you PM. Just received the Witcher books the other day and if I could have found an English version of Metro2033, I would have gotten that years ago.

It wasn't one book in particular, but playing Sid Meyer's Gettysburg, and Antietam got me to go out and find books, websites, and documentaries on those.
Playing Age of Sail and got to learn about sailing ships and eventually reading the Hornblower and Master and Commander books.

I can completely relate to this. Playing hundreds of hours of both Total War: Rome II and Attila got me really interested in Roman history so I started reading quite a few books and articles on the subject.

Ice Cold in Alex or Eating in ...
Flight of the Intruder, played the game and then wanted to read the book.

Flight of the old dog loved that game and then found out it was based on a novel so had to track that one down and then read the series smile

Not in the sense of your question/topic title, but when I play(ed) games based on historical events, then I tend to also read some books on the subject.

Like,
WitP => WWII: Tolands "Rising sun" and Churchills view on WWII (the short 1 book edition)
WW1 Tuchman "Guns of August" and a book on the air war
AACW: McPherson "Battlecry of freedom"
7 Years War: C. Clarks "Prussia"

This has been a largely neglected war when it comes to PC games. The only game I've played that comes close is Total War: Empire and that's only because it covers the era 1700-1800.

Based on Aegods American Civil War engine there is a game callied " Rise of Prussia"

It's probably not a particularly easy era to cover, with changing alliances, big and small, many smaller principalities (as one of which Prussia started as well) also playing important roles. And it's "overshadowed" by the deeds of a certain little Frenchman soon after (or more precise Corsican before some French members get offended).

LOL!! Great post WhoCares. I've had a long running interest in Friedrich der Grosse so naturally I've read up on a few books concerning the Seven Year's War. It's one of the major reasons why I love the film "Barry Lyndon" so much because a significant part of the movie takes place during that war.

My favorite from way back when I was a kid was "Below the Root." Interestingly, "Below the Root" might have been the very first Metroidvania ever made--before even Metroid itself!

The game was based on the "Green Sky" trilogy of novels, and had an interesting world, especially for the time.

This game, however... I was inspired to play by the book, and then the subsequent movie(not the game first):

The game sucked, though. Silent Service was much better.

Came here to post exactly this, except I was a huge Dale Brown fan first and then adored the game and was so excited as a kid when the game came out.

Yup. I seem to remember that 'Flight of the Intruder' (Spectrum HoloByte) came with the book of the same name. I read it numerous times.

Great game - I remember it was quite tough. And I loved re-reading the manual (the manuals back then were amazing). Film was good too.

It was tough. I much preferred the book to the game. The film was very good. I particularly enjoyed the Phantom $hitter smile
