I have no accent, as it is how American English should be spoken.
Everyone else has an accent.
But I'm English Dart so you do have an accent!
I had to refine mine, as did my mother before me as one 'couldn't possible find good employment with that accent'. My mother was rather 'cut glass' but reverted to her original East London intonation in the final months of her life. My wife says she can tell when I have been back to London, as I sound 'a bit geezer' on return to our country idyll. "No wot I mean guv; no wot I mean?"

Where I work they recently hired a guy who is originally from Boston and he absolutely has the classic stereotypical Bostonian accent you hear in movies like "Good Will Hunting" and "The Departed". One day I mentioned to him that I hope he never loses his accent by living in Florida for too long and he immediately said to me "you're the one with the accent, not me!".

I've never considered colloquial American english pronunciation as having an accent, but I've oft pondered how odd it must seem to Brits when the hear us. After all, they take classes through primary school teaching them the "proper" way to pronounce and spell their words.
Much good that is. The cockneys seem to disagree with the Queen's english professor!
Recently my wife was operated on under a general anesthetic. After she came round from the narcosis and the surgeon visited her to check she was ready to be released he said to her “You speak very good English, you babbled away all through the operation in English.” My wife asked what she said but all he would say was “what was said in the operation theatre stays in the operation theatre “
It is bugging her that she does not know what she said 😀

I didn't think it would be possible for someone to speak even involuntarily while they were under general anesthesia. Well, you learn something new every day on SimHQ!

I was born and raised in Virginia. My mother was born in Pennsylvania but lived her adult life in Virginia. When I went to college in Michigan, my roommates told me that they could barely understand my mother, when she called, because of her southern accent. I told them that they would be in serious trouble if they ever actually spoke to someone from the real southern states.
Holy smokes. I just watched this video and I couldn’t understand a lot of what this guy said.
@ PM ...of course a lot of that was for comedic effect but when Mark was speaking in his normal conversational voice he has a 'townie' accent like me.
He is correct that some folks south of St. John's speak with a very pure Waterford Irish accent. The Irish tourism authority and several Irish universities routinely send send people here and young folks sometimes work in Ireland in the summer in the tourism industry because only native Irish can tell them from locals

We ain't that hard to understand, ya hear.
Here's some trivia: Guess which accent in America is considered the sexiest?
Hs anyone noticed that after coming back from a vacation, people back home say you have an accent (from where you were vacationing)?
There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Back when I was in high school I had a friend who spent the summer somewhere in new england. When she came home she had a strong north eastern accent. I suspect it happens more quickly with young folk.
EDIT: Oh yeah, in reference to the sexy accent thing, she was much more sexy with the accent.

That is a thing of the past, mate. Regional and ethnic accents are encouraged now, even with BBC newscasters!
'Yoot' in my nearest city of Worcester try and speak 'gangsta'...very funny to hear with a broad Worcestershire accent!
I totally agree with this. An attractive girl with a Southern accent is to die for in my opinion. I know, I dated a few of them in the past.
At the other end of the scale though you have the women with the really heavy NYC accent. Ugh...

It really wasn't the accent that was the problem, it was the speed at which they were speaking that made it difficult to understand some of the things those guys were saying.

That's why we take our time here in the South to savor our words, and speak them slower.

In my defense, I was left unsupervised...
