Just got a phone call from my bank saying I had 2 transactions of my bank credit card for $300 and $1500 and the places where these transactions took place. They wanted me to confirm that I had made the transactions. Even stating the first 2 digits of the card. The phone then went dead when I didn't reply by pushing an option digit.

First off I don't have a credit card with that bank. I then phoned my bank and they said there was no such transactions and the cards start with the first 2 digits mentioned by the caller.

Scam. The first two digits mean practically nothing, just part of the group that refers to the type of card it is.
Even if they gave the last 4 digits, you hang up and call the regular number for customer service on the card itself. Always call back with the number you already know.
It’s just a widespread phishing attempt, they likely have none of your info, they just refer to very commonly used cards, or “microsoft”, Symantec etc. Anything a lot of people have with calls like this.

Yup RK it was a phishing attempt which I knew from the get go. But had to be sure, so phoned the bank. One can't be to careful these days.

I keep getting emails from "Save You" claiming to have hacked my computer using the password from a game I don't even still have on my computer. He claims to have used my web cam (I don't have one) "pleasuring myself", which he threatens to expose me if I don't send him $800 bitcoins . all his emails have gone in junk file.

I have had several quite long emails stating that the writer has "hacked" my PC and transferred a trojan into my system that will lock it permanently unless I transfer X euros to their account.

Also some similar to coasty's trying to blackmail me over a non-existent video showing me masturbating in front of the PC.

Obvious scams and treated as such.

I got a scam call yesterday from 2345, that was the whole number and I didn't answer it. I get the E-mail threatening to expose me about every other month and that just made me change my passwords to all my games since the pw was a current game pass. I also get Emails saying someone attempted to sign into one of my game accounts from a certain country, always a good idea to change a pass from time to time.

A couple days ago I started getting phone calls from my own number. Went to Verizon to see if they could do something. They said they couldn’t. After four days they stopped. But it sure leaves you with an uneasy feeling.

But on the bright side, I posted a thread that I had unsubscribed from a bunch of sites sending me emails. That seems to have worked. Stopped getting emails from them and didn’t get an increase in emails from other unknowns. I had been uneasy that by unsubscribing I might have opened myself up to others, but it doesn’t seem to have happened.

Make sure you're using an anti-spam/scam/telemarketer APP for your phone. Example .... "HIYA". Make sure you have anti-virus program on your computer and anti-virus APP for your mobile phone. Your anti-virus service should also provide (both for your computer and phone) a VPN (virtual private network)

Your credit should be frozen at all 3 credit bureaus

You should have a registered online account with the social security administration

If your not retired you should register with E-Verify
ABOUT myE-Verify:

myE-Verify is a free Web-based service that has something of value for everyone who works or is looking for a job in the United States. E-Verify is for employers; myE-Verify is for workers and job seekers.

Nearly 600,000 employers at over 1.9 million hiring sites use E-Verify to quickly confirm the employment eligibility of new employees. myE-Verify helps prepare you for the E-Verify employer by informing you about your rights and employer responsibilities. It also gives you free tools to participate in the process and protect your identity. All services are available nationwide and in Spanish at myE-Verify en Español.

Here is what myE-Verify has for you:
Self Check: Verify your personal information against the same records E-Verify checks. Job seekers can confirm that their records are in order or, if a mismatch occurs, learn how to make updates.

Resource Center: Information and learning materials from the worker’s perspective about the E-Verify and employment eligibility verification processes, including your rights, your roles, your employer’s responsibilities and your privacy. Information is in text and video. Many resources are available in multiple languages.

Case Tracker: Track the status of your E-Verify case-in-progress and know if any action is required.

myE-Verify personal accounts: Establish your own secure personal account to access additional myE-Verify features. Account holders have access to the following two features:

https://www.e-verify.gov/mye-verify/about-mye-verify

If you're getting a lot of spam or it appears they know your phone number odds are big they know a lot more about you than you think ..... it could be secure information about you was obtained from a cyberattack or from the multiple cyberattacks over the years. You may not even know that your exact area code and phone number are appearing on Venezuela's dark web !

I'll second "Hiya". Has cut my scam calls drastically.

yes like other information about a person - which is why you want 2-factor authentication for your phone and strong passwords set on your login account plus a pincode which you're required to give to your phone account representative and security questions to answer in the event you forget that pincode.

I just got an email this evening supposedly from Paypal stating that I had some suspicious activity on my account. The return address had Paypal in the name, but there was no Paypal logo on the email. There was a PDF file that the email was asking me to click for instructions as what to do next.

Of course I never click on anything included in a suspicious email, but went to the Paypal sight to check things out. There was hardly any activity other
than a minor purchase I made on eBay this week and an automatic payment I have for a video subscription. After a little searching I found a phone number to call and they gave me a email address to forward the scam email to--telling to delete the original afterward.

I have done this with several other financial institutions in the past including more that I don't have accounts with than those that I do.

Cheers

maybe its time for an upgrade biggrin

...but you can still make sure you have a pin code at your phone company and that they ask you for it if you attempt to make any account changes
