Mine just has data1.cab, data2.cab, data3.cab. I went through the install folders and couldn't find any music in there either. Sorry. Maybe someone else?

Hi Messyhead,

I have checked on my original CD and there are two files in the cohokum folder.

sound.dat
sound.hdr

Are these what you're looking for ?

Cheers,

Andy

Which version do you have? Supposedly the music was removed from the American version, and it's not contained in the budget releases. It needs to be in the original European version

They could be, I'm not sure to be honest. Supposedly you could put the disc in and play the music from it. How big are those files? Would you be able to send me them?

I was just curious to hear what the original music was like. I was thinking of looking for royalty free music to use instead. I'm not sure of the legality of using the original music now.

I searched through really old forum posts, and there's a few about the music. Someone had made a small utility to play the music separately. Also, after the first patch, the music stopped working.

I have my eye on an original boxed version on ebay, I might buy it to check myself.

Hi

Sizes are 30,143k and 92k respectively. How do I send them ? I can zip them to make smaller.

The version I have did not have a box. It's a re-release from a company called XPLOSIV so the original boxed one may be different.

Cheers,

Andy

Ah, I don't think that will be them then. From what I read, re-releases didn't have the music included.

I'll get the original from ebay, and see how it goes.

Hi Messyhead,

I own the original EU-Versions and also the US-Versions of both games (perhaps also the GOG version), cause I'm a collector of all kind of simulations since the late 80's.

If there was a soundtrack on one of those CD's, I must have it, cause they are the original ones wich where released in 1999 (EEAH) and 2000 (EECH). I will take a look in my collection.

Great, let me know if you find them.

When you play the game from the CD, without any patches or mods, do you get the music? I read it stopped working after the first patch, but not sure if that's the 1.1E or another one.

I will take a look at it this week.

I must first reach my DJ-cases where all the simulators are stored. I will start to tidy and furnish my cockpit room this week. If this happens I can also take a look in the cases and give the original CD's a try.

I will sent the tracks to you when I'm done. smile

Messyhead,

I have not forgotten you, but I had a lot to do this week to finish the KA-50 cockpit as I promised.

I have some work to do in my cockpit-room now, to get it done somewhere this year. Doing this I will also look for the music-files on my CD's.

Thanks for sharing. I've removed the links as I'm not sure they should be shared publicly, but I've downloaded a copy. I'm going to experiment with adding the music back in, and maybe try and find similar royalty free music to use if I can't use the original tracks.

Hi Guys, I'm curious what the music sounds like, my disks don't have any music tracks on them. I have a later version of the sim. Any chance you could privately share the link?

It's very 90s techno. Reminds me a lot of some Prodigy tracks.

I'll PM you.

Having listened to them, I think if we can work out how to get music to play from hard drive, I could try and find some royalty free music that would suit.

It is very techno, having listened to the tracks. When I play the sim I usually already have music playing in the background from a standard music player. Select enough tracks and it plays all the way through. I would think that some predominantly percussive tracks like they use for Halo would go well with this type of sim. Music is all personal preference though, we all seem to like different things.

I managed to contact the original game music creator. They said they'd be happy for the music to be included, and even offered to remaster it.

So when I have some time, I'll try and get the tracks to play from hard drive, and take it from there.

This has been a bit of a result. I wish everything with trying to mod this game went this way.

Alex Cable, the creator of the original music (his name is on the credits screen), has remastered the music and sent me it. He's happy for the music to be included in the game, and he even redid the EEAH music too.

I've asked if he could email something that can be included in the readme, so that there's no doubt that it shows the creator gave permission.

So we just need to re-write the code that plays the in game music now, and get that restored. It's a task for the todo list biggrin

I'm not able to share them unfortunately, they can only be shared with the future modded version of the game that's released for free. So even GoG won't be allowed to distribute the music. I'll upload the music to the code repo, along with the permission, I'll create new branch for it.

I checked one of the EEAH tracks, and that is one of them. The EECH music is pretty similar style.

Now that's he's remastered both, I suppose the EEAH ones could be included with EECH.

Originally, EECH has 1 intro, 3 in-game and 3 mission success tracks. List of tacks hardcoded, and probably will stay so even when sound files being loaded as WAVs, but it can be increased of course.
messyhead, how many of each type you have in total?

Hi. I have 7 tracks in total. They're not categorised into what they're for, just name track1, track2 etc

Yeah I know they are not labeled, but you can see their length - mission success are short tracks.
If these 7 tracks for EECH only, EEAH has some as well? Reason I am asking - I did increase playlist adding 3 action themes, so different music appear when player engaged by enemy, which add some dynamics to the process.
Do you think you can collect 3 ingame themes and 3 action tracks? or at least 1-2, then I can adjust the list. Unfortunately, sound files list is hardcoded, so I need to know final count before testing.

I will share alternative playlist as example too, but right now classic soundtrack is priority.

I have the EEAH tracks too. I'll find the email from the creator, and see if he was OK with me sharing them. Although I suppose they'd need to be in the repo anyway at some point.

They are part of the game, not sure how he can be against it.
Anyway, media files like textures and sounds should never be added in repo as their changes can't be tracked anyway. We have a lot of unnecessary files in /setup folder but that was a mistake to add them back then. So music will be added in installer only.

I'm sure he'll be fine with it. He was really nice about the whole thing, and even remastered the tracks for us. But he sent me a time limited download link to get them initially. I've also got an email from him stating he was happy for them to be used in the game, so it covers any copyright issue.

I've created a new branch on the repo, based off master, that includes the game music. I also added a music licence, containing the permissions statement from the music author, that these tracks can only be used in freely distributed versions of the game. The branch is just called game_music.

Alex Cable (the author) sent me remastered versions of the both the EEAH and EECH tracks. For EECH, there are the same number of tracks, and I've added the remastered versions to the repo. But for EEAH, there are only 3 remastered tracks. I can't remember the conversation I had about them, as it was all done via facebook messenger, and I don't have the messages any more. I've only added the original EEAH tracks for now, as there are all the tracks. If we're not going to use the EEAH music, then it should just be removed as they're quite big files.

I was also thinking that perhaps we could make the game music available as a downloadable mod that can be listened to outside of the game? The tracks are just .wav anyway, so can be listened to on any player.

I know you said not to add media files to the repo, but I didn't have somewhere else permanent to put them just now. Once the installer is setup to get the music files from somewhere that they'll always be hosted, then they can be moved.

I have added WAV music tracks support in latest 1.16.1 version

valid filenames:

MUSIC_ACTION1.wav
MUSIC_ACTION2.wav
MUSIC_ACTION3.wav
MUSIC_INGAME1.wav
MUSIC_INGAME2.wav
MUSIC_INGAME3.wav
MUSIC_MISSION_COMPLETE1.wav
MUSIC_MISSION_COMPLETE2.wav
MUSIC_MISSION_COMPLETE3.wav

MUSIC_INTRO.wav but it does not work yet

WAV format 44100 8bit, even if 16bit should be supported but it does not work in my case. maybe using wrong settings or program, have not tried to solve it.

Awesome, nice one.

Im now working permanently from home due to the virus, so I'm hoping to have time to do some more coding on EECH.

checked your tracks. would you try to convert/cut them for the game, or I have to do it?

so what we have:

EEAH
2 3 are good action themes (techno I guess, similar to the EEAH teaser music)
4 is less dynamic, but probably good for the action as well
5 is same as 3, 6 is empty

EECH
1 intro, can be used for its purpose
2 3 4 will be ok for the normal flight I guess, even if some of them kind of relaxing
5 6 7 short success tracks

maybe it can be 4 flight / 2 action tracks, as most of the time pilot will move to the mission point

What do you mean by converting or cutting them?

These are the original tracks from the author, that were on the original game CD. Maybe the code played certain parts of certain tracks in the game?

Only specific WAV format is supported by game

Encoding 1 Channels 2 Bits 16 not supported @ 9.90
Invalid WAVE file: audio\MUSIC\MUSIC_MISSION_COMPLETE3.wav @ 9.90

so they should be converted.

Also, some of them longer than 5 minutes, this limit can be increased by code change of course. But I have made some tests and already met x86 process size limit in RAM (game just crashes). So music files should not take mo than 30-50MB in total for safety reason because all music files loading into memory on initialization stage. At least until memory limit problem will be solved.

Just to be clear - I have not used any of existing CD music playing code, as even if this feature still works after some fixes, it's too glitchy and unstable even when CD image mounted from hard drive. So new code, new rules, and new limitations in some way as well.

I'm not able to convert them. I can upload the original EECH tracks as I think they're a lower bit rate if that helps.

no need, I have both CDs with music.

-- EDIT --

Added link to the EEAH/EECH music pack, ripped from CDs. Sound files compressed, monophonic, and shortened - to provide best conditions for testing.
