In my experience, the wingman designation has no real significance as far as AI behavior, and your wingman will act no different than any other member of the flight. From what I have seen (for example} he will not follow you ... if you leave formation he will simply stay in the flight formation, following the flight leader. Once in combat I have seen no evidence that he tries to protect you or shadow you, but that could just be me losing situational awareness. I will let others chime in. Cheers!

I believe this to be true as well...
The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

I have experienced my wingman attach an enemy on my tail but that may be coincidental. In this case I didn't call for help.

If the wingman is coded to follow you, I've seen no evidence of it so far... however, as a side note, real pilots of the battle often cite that once a formation entered into a fight, it quickly degenerated into single combat, often ending in a clear sky with no other aircraft about or anywhere near. Seems pretty realistic in that respect! Depends on perspective I guess. German accounts name the close cooperation of the rotten/Schwärme and the discipline of the rottenflieger as the prime difference in fightingstyle between LW and RAF. One of the reasons why some German pilots have so outstanding scores is that only half tried to score while the rest protected the killers. And returning without your wingman was often regarded as tactical failure, even when you shot down an enemy.
