Hi! After years of keeping an eye on WOFF development I finally bought it couple days ago. Haven't played it much yet but I have been enjoying it so far!

After one quick missions to test that the game and my joystick bindings work, I decided to start a campaign without further training and preparation in the risk free quick battles for the sake of more authentic learning experience (I have played a bit of Rise of Flight over the years though). Wanting to participate in the Fokker Scourge I started from autumn 1915 and selected "Jasta 1" since, according to unit search, that was the only fighter unit that would have Fokker E.III. After that the things became a bit confusing...

After training I was deployed to FFA 32 recon squadron at the end of November 1915. I'm pretty confused about the relation of the of FFA 32 and Jasta 1 (which I later realized was not even formed before late 1916). Originally the ace list listed a single Ace for my current unit (Erns Freiherr von Althaus who has never been in Jasta 1 or FFA 32 from what I understand) but after a couple days the Ace disappeared from the list together with one Fokker E.III without explanation. I'm now extremely confused about what is going on, is FFA 32 going to turn or combine into Jasta 1 at some point? Why was Jasta posting offered almost a year before Jastas would even exist? Why is there a Jasta 15 available in the possible unit transfers even though that should also not exist for another year?

To my initial surprise, almost every German unit is primarily recon and listed as having Aviatik C.I (only three units have other planes as main types). I have been trying to figure out where all the Fokkers are with JJJ65's nifty WOFF encyclopedia but it lists Jasta 1 from 14/02/1915 with Aviatic B.I and Halb DIII, neither of which is used by FFA 32 (Jasta 1 not actually being there yet). I wonder what the reason for the discrepancy is, does the encyclopedia use the current game files or some now outdated database?

Is this how things are supposed to be or is something broken somewhere? I'm a bit that worried my campaign data has somehow corrupted with all the time travelling Jastas and misplaced ghost aces.

---

Other than the campaign confusion the game has been great so far! I was extremely surprised by how good the game looks considering it's based on CFS3 and only uses DX9. The horizon and sunrises are among the prettiest I have seen in any game! I haven't gotten into any air combat yet but I'm liking the way the Aviatik handles and I have already had one memorable nerve wrecking (and completely FUBAR from the outset) bombing missions lead by a persistently incompetent flight leader who I have already learned to dislike biggrin

mvp7, welcome to the grinder! I think you may have made a mistake. If you want to join a specific squad, go to “pilot dossiers”, then “enlist new pilot”, then go to “manual deployment “ at the bottom right. of your screen. I just checked it and the earliest everyone is flying Fokker’s in Jasta one is March, 1916. You can go through years, months and days for each squad or Jasta and pick exactly when you want to show up. If you choose manual there should be no training.

You can do your own “training” in QC if you want. I hope this helps.

I’m sure Lou will chime in but the standing rule is new guys buy the drinks!

when Jastas are formed based on an existing organization the game models that. so Jasta 1 starts off with a different name: KEK Nord.

dedicated single-seat German fighter squadrons that early in the war would have been called KEKs "Kampf Einsitzer Kommando". they also didn't exist until spring of 1916. if I remember properly it was sort of a fall-out reaction to the battle of Verdun. there was so much Allied air activity that they couldn't effectively deal with Allied intrusions without lumping a lot of their existing fighters from different two-seater squadrons together in temporary organizations. this left escort duties to the arguably better two-seaters being introduced at that time. the Roland C.II, for example, was faster and more powerfully armed than the Fokker E.IIIs... and easier to fly than the Fokker E.IV. so it made more sense to save the Fokkers for hunting down enemy bombers and have unarmed and obsolete bombers escorted by newer, more powerfully armed two seaters like the Roland C.II

there's nothing wrong with the way the squadrons are modelled or arranged in the game. there are, perhaps, one or two slight divergences, but the squadrons in WOFF are very thoroughly researched. the biggest fault I could find with it is that not all of the historically assigned aircraft are available yet.

the conflicting squadron names is something you tend to see when you're jumping back and forth from one time period to another. once you enter the campaign everything will get sorted out by the game manager and it will make more sense.

if you would really like to fly the E.III then I would suggest keeping it pretty straight forward and simply join Jasta 1 (KEK Nord), 4 (KEK Vaux), 6 (Fokkerstaffel Sivry),10 (KEK 3), or 15 (KEK Habsheim). these started off as KEK or dedicated Fokkerstaffels… so that should give you what you're looking for. it's not too difficult to find a poor E.III squadron in the summer of 1916. but good luck staying alive!

if you like the Aviatk C.I and enjoy the Fokker as a side-dish you get to fly later. you'll end up with a lot more options. personally, I enjoy flying the Aviatik C.I a bit more than the Fokker. depending on the variant of Fokker the Aviatik carries about four times as much ammo! it's more stable and easier to fly.

(if I had my wish I'd probably be flying a Rumpler C.I.. which was a bit of a 'hot rod' for the early war time period. I like to think of it as the early war German version of the Bristol Fighter F2b)

Thanks for the answers. I'm going to stick to my current career although I'm mulling over seeking tranfer to MFJ 1 (Marine KEK). They are the only KEK unit currently available but I'm pretty sure they are stuck with nothing but Fokker eindeckers until late 1916.

I'm not suspecting the accuracy of the research put into WOFF campaign but I'm trying to understand the technical reason (bug or feature) for the oddities I have run into. Here's are pictures of the posting you are offered if you use the following pilot settings: German, Autumn 1915, Fighter, Fokker E.III; and one of the possible tranfers to "Jasta 13" in Nov-Dec 1915.

Is "Jasta 1" or "Jasta 13" something like the primary key of the unit with the current name of the unit being "FFA 32" or "FFA 19" that's going to be changed to Jasta at correct date?

I'm a bit confused you say " I decided to start a campaign without further training" then you say after training you joined FFA 32 (J1)
But using "Manual Squad Deployment" option selection and scrolling through the date you will see at some point FFA 32 becomes J1. So it's called J1 (we have to call it something overall and J1 is more famous known than FFA 32 to most).
Aces often come and go as they did historically (WOFF also includes historical pilots not just aces - several 1000 Aces and HPs basically, many with aircraft skins if you download the extra skin pack) - you can reduce this to the top 50 aces or so via workshop setting.

The ace could be an error as I believe he was in FFA 23 so could be a typo on entering into the database, Shredward would know hopefully he'll see and chip in.

Looking at FFA32/J1 in the manual squad roster you can see at the bottom right which aircraft they had in roughly what order. Aircraft may come and go, and note there are also 3 aircraft type "slots" at any 1 given period where more than one type is deployed in the squadron. Rank decides who gets the good ones. So make yourself a higher rank when making your pilot if you want better a/c.

Using that date advance, you can also see the date when aircraft come and go and which rank "slot" they are - in the middle of the information area you get to see what aircraft are "currently" active for a given period.

Thanks! So the "Jasta 1" and "Jasta 13" are basically the database primary keys of the units that will eventually be changed into those units. Haven't looked into the manual deployments yet but will do so in the future.
.

What I meant by no further training is that I didn't do dogfights and (unrealistically) learn the characteristics of the crafts I was about to use in the campaign. Instead I'll get my first dogfights in campaign and learning the limits of my plane's performance might be the last thing I do.

MFJ 1 does seem interesting. I just might end up doing the opposite and transfer from FFA32/Jasta1 to MFJ1. Does MFJ fly mainly on land or do they venture out to the sea?

Been a while since I flew that pilot. As I recall, mainly over land. Only over water occasionally while in transit or climbing for altitude.

Thanks Stache! Maybe I'll try to get a transfer to MFJ1 in January 1916 and then to some other unit later in the spring/summer. Does crash landing into sea result in certain death or can the player still be rescued?

Some questions about mods:

Is there map mod that would make the ingame map higher resolution or at least a bit more crisp? The default map looks like it has been resized or compressed which leaves it a bit unclear. I wouldn't mind having some additional map detail either.

I'd also like a mod that changes the menu loading screens (ww1 objects on black background) to stuff like airfields, briefing rooms, landed aircraft etc in a way that still fits with the rest of the game's visual style.

In a nutshell ... no. WOFF missions are uniquely created so no two missions will every be the same (awesome!! Like in real life). There are no 'canned' missions so no such thing as a scripted 'mission pack' can be created (thankfully) . I believe there are a few mods out there that tinker with the settings WOFF uses to generate each mission (adding more variety for example) but I don't use them so someone else will have to chime in.

Try the "in flight map mod version 1.0". This is under the "maps" button on the mods page.

I've never used it but I think you might want the "load screens mod" - under the "general" button.

Thanks. Nibbio's/OvS's map is definitely more useful with more visible features but sadly has the same pixelated texts. I'll have to take a look at the loading screen mods to see if they have the kind of pictures I'm looking for.

Couple more mod related question:

Are the aircraft skins under "OBD Aircraft Skins" already included in the WOFF UE skin pack?

Is the "WOFF UE - (300) Blue Triangle and FPS Improvement (Version 1.0)" -mod still useful or has the game been updated with similar fixes since the mod's release?

No, I think that the skins on the mods page are not included in the UE skins pack.

Not sure if that particular blue triangle mod is still useful but my understanding is that one of the blue triangle mods is now built into the very best mod of all - the Mission Editor. If you're interested in the Mission Editor you should download it from this forum instead of the mods page (you'll get the latest version - 1.8.5). See here - link
