California USA 6.4 earthquake in the desert.
..followed by a 7.1 last night

Its way out there in Ridgecrest / China Lake area, its not a very populated area, about 100+ miles from Los Angeles so probably little damage. No real reports of damage so far.

I felt it here in San Diego though just mild roll.

There's a bunch of smaller quakes, still continuing but that's not unusual.

Something must be up underground, they had a volcano erupt on an island off of Sicily yesterday.

From a wider point of view an earlier earthquake is actually fairly concerning: M 6.2 - 196km WSW of Bella Bella, Canada
It did nothing, since offshore, but it could have made tsunami if it had been a bit bigger.

I saw some news of a Supermarket in Ridgecrest just stuff off the shelves so doubtful there is any widespread damage from the look of it. ALthough there are reports of some 20 emergency responds so far no other details.

Nothing too major, few reports now:

UPDATE 12:47 p.m.: Temporary shelters have been set up in Ridgecrest at the Walmart at 201 E. Bowman Road and the Kerr McGee Center at 100 W. California Ave.

RIDGECREST, Calif. (KGET) — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake Thursday morning left thousands without power, caused several fires and resulted in the evacuation of Ridgecrest Regional Hospital and several apartment buildings.

The quake struck at 10:33 a.m. about 11 miles northeast of Ridgecrest, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

It was felt in Bakersfield minutes later, where shaking lasted several seconds. Reports also came in of the quake being felt in Los Angeles, San Diego and Las Vegas.

Kern County firefighters said around 11 a.m. they were handling a couple dozen incidents ranging from structure fires to medical assistance in and around Ridgecrest. Urban search and rescue teams were also responding.

“Surveys still continue to inspect critical infrastructure including safety of highway passes through area canyons,” firefighters said.

Firefighters later said a survey of Highway 178 through the canyon showed it to be clear.

Shortly before noon, sheriff’s officials said deputies were assisting Ridgecrest police and firefighters, and a helicopter was en route to assess the area.

California City police were urging residents to stay off their phones and free up lines for emergency use only.

Supervisor Mick Gleason said he spoke with Ridgecrest Mayor Peggy Breeden after the quake. Things on the ground are “OK,” she told him, and emergency response crews from various agencies were conducting building checks and checking for injuries.

Congressman Kevin McCarthy tweeted he was working with state and local officials to assess the damage and provide any support and resources that are needed.

“THANK YOU to the many first responders who are already on the scene,” McCarthy wrote.

Thousands of people took to social media in the minutes following the quake.

“Felt that here in Ventura,” wrote Tim Connor on Facebook. “My buddy’s truck was shaking while we were leaning on it.”

“Felt it here in Vegas, pendulum in grandfather clock bouncing off sides, patio sliding door swaying,” wrote Julie Graff Dehner. “Yep, it must have been strong.”

And Sharyl Cox Dennison, a Ridgecrest resident, said, “That was the worst one I have felt.”

The 6.6 quake was followed by dozens of smaller ones in the area, according to the survey’s website.

Holding as is with some >4. aftershocks still in the area. Also a 4.1 across the border near Mexicali, but that's not that unusual.

7.1 right after a 5 and aftershocks continue. see the http://scedc.caltech.edu/recent/Quakes/quakes0.html page quoted below. refreshing that page shows latest or

Strangely I didn't know it as I was asleep. I wondered why I woke up.

Purported to be a intersection of 2 previously unknown faults. And s growing fault I briefly heard on news. Here's a pic from the

This definately puts me on alert. I will be sleeping lightly!

This map shows the quakes and geography best I think: https://www.cisn.org/map/index.html

You can see very close to China Lake. I've been to the area, its actually a huge valley off the Sierras very panaramic view with the 'Panamint mtns' in the background
looks like a movie or even another planet at times.

This is a good thing, as it relieved the stresses of the plates out there in the boonies, and inland.

The warning signs for The Big One will be zero earthquakes for a good ten or twenty years.

The opinions of this poster are largely based on facts and portray a possible version of the actual events.

could be, but megathrust type earthquakes are often preceded by a large fore-shock. i'd be stocking some big jugs of water and canned food in a closet or in the basement for the next couple months just in case. a week or so of food and water will really help out if the stores go empty if the big one hits.

a few days before the 9.1 earthquake hit east japan, we experienced a fairly strong shake (around 7.1 iirc) followed by constant aftershocks over the next few days. that got my attention and i am glad i stocked up on water and canned goods. after the huge one hit on march 11th, the supermarkets basically went empty for a week.

it was an interesting study in efficient logistics systems - i learned that certain industries really have their stuff together all the time and can just keep on ticking, others like supermarkets break down quick. getting food was sketchy business for a while.

just my advice. the phenomenon of a big quake followed by constant aftershocks before the main megathrust occurs is very well documented, you can observe it in many of the largest recorded earthquakes.

Earthquakes in this area are not a good thing since the NWS is up there. Other than that I agree with Dart about the stress relief thing is at least in a remote area.

And yes I definately agree with VF9_Longbow there could be a bigger one and the stores are never stocked up. 7.1 is fairly big but nothing like a 9.1

But then again... it could be Godzilla!

my main worries concern if this cascades or is a precursor to the major faults moving.

Here in San Diego county we are far away maybe 150- 200 miles and even a major quake in Rridgecrest area would hardly be a concern to us physically.

But off the coast inland you could draw a line from sea of cortez / gulf of california up past salton sea which is maybe 60 miles away north and that's the San Andreas, the edge of the pacific plate and thats actrually the big dnger here and especially since there is a huge geothermal plant there which is the most dangerous thing in opinion of many scientist could be affecting the whole shebang.
see: https://news.ucsc.edu/2013/07/geothermal-earthquakes.html

Of course huge dangers lurk everywhere on the this side of the pacifc rim.
The main ones otherwise are like for instance what is considered the most dangerous area for tsunami generation thus my concern over M 6.2 - 196km WSW of Bella Bella, Canada that area is predicted to spawn a possibly Mega tsunami at some point in possibly my lifetime (say 20-30 more years?.

Chris Goldfinger, Oregon State earthquake geologist, is warning of the imminent risk.

The problem lies with the subduction zone where it meets the Oceanic Plate and is slowly forced beneath the North American plate

The Cascadia Subduction Zone is seventy miles off America's Pacific Northwest and stretches all the way from Vancouver Island to Northern California.

Mr Goldfinger said: "It buckles upward and it gets pushed backward like a spring until eventually, after a few hundred years, it just has to let go."

This is what triggers a massive tidal surge and the tsunami

The scientist and his team were the first to discover the next |"Big One" is long over due.

Not to mention we have some of the most dangerous volcanoes up north there starting at area by Mt st. Helens Lassen, Shasta etc.which alone could make mega bursts at any time.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Volcanoes see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Volcano_Observatory

I'm actually more concerned about this: M 3.0 - 14km NE of Thousand Palms, ...W 14.4 19 km (12 mi) ESE of Anza, CA

[Linked Image]

just because of the aforementioned. Although I have to say small quakes happen everyday around there to mexical its not unusual per se.

What I'm watching out for is this:

[Linked Image]

If those little quakes ort a bigger start walking a line up the san andreas.. eg. 'dominoe effect' then.. well the whole thing could go! (strictly my opinion however)

or if anywhere else Godzilla starts walking then watch out!

wow, you americans REALLY like lemonade......and here i though it was just a cartoon stereotype.

on a serious though if they had to pick THAT place, why place the parking lot high but keep the storage at sea level....near the beach.....
