Thought so too but turns out the rights on that book are with Legendary Studios, so they used "different sources" - whatever that means - for this movie.

The book is indeed brilliant, and maybe better off for an entire series as it spans way too much time and people for even a 3h movie.

Quite honestly, so few movies are made that center on auto racing that it would be a travesty NOT to watch this if you are in any way, shape or form a fan of auto racing.

It’s hard to make a great racing movie. This looks like a STRONG contender. Theater-worthy even if just for the sounds.

Yup. Since 1970 these are the only "great" ones I can think of. Please feel free to add more if I have forgotten any:

Le Mans
Rush
Talladega Nights (yeah it's a comedy but I think it captured the whole NASCAR culture perfectly)


And then you have the ones I would consider to be "ok" or just plain bad:

Driven
Days of Thunder



And by "auto racing" movies I'm talking about professional leagues/competition so stuff like "Cannonball Run" or the Herbie movies don't count.

Grand Prix and Le Mans. Rush was too, but it was more about the "racers" than the "racing".
Otherwise, pretty much has to be some kind of documentary style film.

Driven is a guilty pleasure of mine. Pretty much a rework of Grand Prix and the CGI was too obvious, but I still like it for some reason.
Days of Thunder is Top Gun on the ground, so kind of have to like it too. Just that neither is in the same league as racing movies.

So a Bourne, Batman and Punisher movie, could be good and will watch it

Went to see this today. Bloody marvellous, enjoy it.

Went yesterday and I really enjoyed it. Of course Hollywood takes liberties with the story but overall I thought it a good movie that should also be very satisfying to non racing fans. Also a good tribute to Ken Miles. As a geek I appreciated the authentic sixties look and feel of the Le Mans track, and I recognized which turns they were depicting, even the Daytona roadcourse chikane.

Wife and I went to see this yesterday. We both loved it, really great movie.
Grand Prix has always had the best cinematography, Le Mans is more about pure racing, Rush had a good and true story about drivers. This movie combines it all really well and easily has the best story in a racing movie.
Very well cast, great performances and very believable even if some might be dramatized.
I did notice some CGI, but what was noticeable was never key to the scene. During Le Mans, it looked like some racing lights were digitally added to a real shot of the course. No big deal. As for the action, I couldn't tell what was real vs cgi. SURELY some had to be for practical purposes, but it's so well done that I really don't care.
I knew the story about the GT40, Henry Ford II and Shelby, but I didn't know Ken Miles story, just his name. This was a really great flick IMO.
I have movie posters for Grand Prix and Le Mans on my wall, I may have to get this one to go with them one day.
