Iam in the market for a new GPU (current is a GTX 1060-6GB), and I think it´s either confusing and/or the right moment to do so but... From the past, AMD wasent your first choice for flight simulators, mainly FSX/P3D, but with all the recent tech upgrade (x64) Iam more then curious to know how the newest (or not so new) AMD cards stack up with my pref simulator Prepard3d v4.5.

I don´t see much profit from the recent green team´s RTX series, In other words, besides ray tracing and the turing arch, theres not much of a difference, or at least a BIG noticeable difference with the last gen GTX 1080Ti and the recent RTX 2080. The GTX 1080Ti is still on par with the RTX 2080 in alot of cases, so don´t see much advantage there yet. But nVidia has always worked well with FSX/P3D, or at least has been the first choice for the most part.

The first interest that got me to look at the R-VII is it´s 16GB of VRAM aside from other aspects, so It would be nice to see/hear if anybody has had a go on P3Dv4 with this card or the Vega 64, both do have there pros and cons (Vulkan/Mantel) but it be nice to know of first hand smile2 We all know that these sims are VRAM hungry so it´s a logical thing to take into account.

Recent AMD drivers have been giving good results overall, so it´s worth saying that any past info is not up to date on real results.

My build will be around a i7 8700k on a Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Pro mobo, and 32 GB at 3200mhz GL14. SSD/M.2.

Any thoughts are welcomed.

Cheers,

Mike

On that basis smile

Before making the final decision, it might be worth waiting until July (July 7 is rumored). AMD is releasing its 7nm CPUs and mid-range 7nm GPUs.

The 7nm CPUs are rumored equal or better than Intel 14nm for single thread and multi-thread at lower cost.

The 7nm GPUs are rumored equivalent to mid-range RTX 2060 and 2070 (12nm) -- rumored prices are not clear (same or cheaper). No promises. Rather, it just seems reasonable to wait and see since its only a couple months and the result lasts years. The first official AMD announcements by the AMD CEO are supposed to happen next week.

I cannot say for your special application. I have RX Vega64 which runs everything I throw at it at ultra settings -- however, I go by what I see (not measured FPS). Vega 64 can be had for $400 or less (with free games) when shopping sales. When I checked out the 7nm Radeon VII, it seemed only about 5 to 20 percent faster FPS (depending on game) for $700 (but does have excellent compute for professional use). The Radeon VII is a stopgap gaming version of AMD's professional GPU to compete with Nvidia at the same price. The July 7nm versions are a new design for gaming (it is rumored).

Hi Allen,

Thaks for you input.

Yes Iam waiting to see/hear what they say at Computex which is just a few days ahead. With regards to the VII, it´s not that Iam looking for more FPS in P3Dv4, I would be happy just with stable and smooth performance at 30fps if so. The real concern is the scenery loading time while flying at low altitude in VFR. That´s where the VII VRAM might be helpful. Especially now that alot of add-on devs are putting out photo realistic terrain in there scenery. The debate is on with the red team vs blue team...

I did find some info on YT...

X-Plane, althought it´s worth mentioning that X-Plane uses OpenGL.

The thing is that P3D is a whole new world when it comes to settings and such (tweaking), it´s sort of in a class on it´s own, so comparing to your usual AAA titles is not really that informative.

That´s why the decision is so darn complicated. To top it off, each build gets different resaults, which is another bummer because if you try to mimic someones build, that dosen´t mean you will get the same resault.

Sapphire R9 390...

RX 580...

At least for any one who has my same dilemma, all the above might help too.

Again thanks Allen, will keep an eye on Computex and July´s offerings.

I would also like to add, that another reason for me to be looking at AMD´s GPU´s is that, I personally don´t like Nvidias buisness model so far! Most of the media has alot to do with this too, which will jump on the green band wagon no matter what, which makes it even more difficult with there brainstorming of Nvidias products.

I've read on X-Plane site that they are using high thread count code. They said 20 threads at times when I read it -- a couple years back.

Earlier this year took a look at how many threads were in use (a brief test, brief look). For a few seconds it used 16 threads at 90 to 95 percent on all threads (on my 8core/16thread CPU). Other much longer times, 16 threads seemed in use but at a very low level (no impact on FPS).

Just info, FWIW. No real conclusions from the brief test. I will be interested in seeing what the clocks are on the 16c/32t 7nm CPU and the price. I've seen two rumors that contradict. I do plan to buy one of the 7nm CPUs -- unless they "flop" (I doubt it).

I would not mind a Navi GPU if they beat out my Vega 64 significantly. We'll see.

Doing good so far, and as some say, AMD gear needs tweaking for best performance...

Seeing the results of the keynote, I'm currently interested in the Radeon RX 5700 GPU (depending on price) and the 12c/24t Ryzen 9 3900X at $500.

I'm not sure I'd "see" any difference over my current setup -- but, I'd be buying for the "fun of it" -- to be "in" on the 7nm ground floor. We'll see, as we find out more. Next presentation at the AMD Next Horizon Gaming at E3 June 10, 2019 3PM PDT.
